A much more solid cover, this is great with more to come.

Could anybody post the 1st November 2009 chart please? This should be our goal with current modelling.

would be good to have iceland and Norway more filled way snow like 1st November 2010 but I guess we get whats available and each year brings new surprises

Looking at the two day loop, that must have been some snowstorm that hit Russia! Also, big snow gains in Canada, Alaska and Western Scandi. All in all, lovely stuff!

Steve, not just Scandinavia, but lot's of snow too in western parts of Siberia. If all things work out well, we can come close to 2009!

Given the ouput and how solid the current batch has become i'm thinking we are odds on to take the 2009 title (highest October snowfall).

As stated above, over the next few weeks that Snow chart is going to get a LOT more white on it, and in all the right places too...I've noticed from glancing over the archives that more often than not, if Scandi gets a good covering of snow at the end of October and it links up with snowfall over Western / Northern Russia it tends to lead to us in the UK getting a few decent snowfalls over the course of Winter...so the way things are shaping up I'd say at the very least we'll get a couple of UK wide snow events this Winter Posted Image

Spot on, and I'm sure there are quite a few scientific papers out there which back up your opinion as well. Put it this way, if a Northeasterly were to develop from anywhen between November and March, with consistent snow cover over Scandinavia, our chances for snow are enhanced greatly. Having said that, meteorology is never that simple and there are many opposing factors which can contribute towards us in not having snow. Posted Image

All I will say, at this stage is to prepare yourselves for a much colder spell than we have been used to, over the last five days or so of October. Temperature falls from above 70f to the low 40f range look quite plausible at this range within the space of a day or two.

One last thing, good on you for not presenting your post as an only IMBY posting style. Posted Image

Having just seen the GFS for 26 November onwards, I think it's safe to assume that Scandi will be a tad chilly with lots of snow potential. Come on Scandi, fill those gaps!

Haven't seen the synoptics for Canada but the Met 5 day forecast for Calgary looks notably cold for the time of year, with maxima projected at -2, -3 degrees by early next week, quite a swing from the mild conditions of late.

It's a great advancing wall of snow. Ice is about to touch the Russian coast in the West and the north west passage is freezing quickly.

Apparently its the quickest re-freeze of the arctic ice in satellite history (since 1979)

Now that's encouraging!

It really shows just how much ice has been lost based on the satellite data

I agree john no matter how people try and jazz it up its been a devastating year for ice loss in the arctic quite probably a tipping point for summer ice loss and no amount of talk about speedy winter recovery can change that

Hi C,

Not from an official site but someone who runs a blog did the calculations. (I'm assuming they are right)

The minimum was very low but would it have been so low without the massive polar low at the beginning of August?
