There is nearly always some significant snowfall in the scottish hills in May.

That's not strictly true. Whilst snow can be anticipated in May, the volume that fell in May was exceptional, and I believe that is what Inertius was referring to. Significant snow doesn't nearly always fall, but rather occasionally falls.
