The largest cliff collapse in Britain since Beachy Head fell in on itself in 1999 has been caught – live – on camera in Cornwall.

Geologists are raving over the amazing You Tube film which they say is ‘of global importance’ to scientists who study rock-falls.

The dramatic rock-fall happened over Dead Man’s Cove, which is part of the North Cliffs range half a mile East of Hells Mouth.

The unique footage was taken by Cornwall Council Soils and Materials Engineer Richard Hocking.

Richard was keeping an eye on a large crack in the cliff when the stunning natural drama unfolded on October 3rd.

That's quite something. Watching the base of the cliff first, and seeing how the sheer up the crack to the top develops - great video.

(Moved into nature section :))

All of the cliffs along this coast are unstable and you are warned never to get too close to the edge. A photo of a similar cove just to the west and just to prove you can't legislate for idiots the north cliff at Portreath.

Oh to witness something like that ! That woman didn't hold back did she !

I walked the Lands End to St Ives walking trail several years ago. It is such a spectacular, beautiful area. A bit surprised how rugged it got, some of those trails were a bit dicey ( steep narrow sections on very narrow track ).

Anyone in the know whether this cliff collapse was on this route?

No. It's on the coastal footpath route but just west of Portreath.

There was a slightly bigger landslide in Iceland last week, similarly caused by recent heavy rains on the north of the Island.

An estimated volume of between 700000 and 1 million cubic meters fell with this, luckily noone was at the foot of the mountain or climbing it when the slide began.
