Well.....that's scuppered any potential cold spell.

James Madden, forecaster for Exacta Weather, said: “January is likely to become progressively colder. It will be a very cold and exceptionally snowy month overall, especially in the second half.â€

I wish the owner sack the entire editorial team of that newspaper..

"All we need is a change of wind direction to turn this rain into snow and that is what we are expecting in just a couple of weeks." says Jonathan Powell.

Is the all? Crikey.

Incidentally James Madden was predicting snowfalls during one of the warmest autumns on record in 2011

The irony is that article was published just a few days before that exceptional heatwave!!

Who the hell is James Madden?

16 Dead As Snow Batters Eastern US

At least 16 people have died due to blizzard-like conditions battering the eastern half of the US, leaving nearly two feet of snow. Around 1,900 flights have been cancelled across the country as howling wind and sub-zero temperatures wreaked chaos. Governors in New York and New Jersey declared states of emergency and urged residents to stay at home, while hundreds of schools were shut down in Boston and New York. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said: "This is nothing to be trifled with. People should seriously consider staying in their homes." The deaths include those caused by difficult traffic conditions in Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois.

Bad weather seems to be the theme at the moment, AFAIK we have only one dead/missing at present in these recent wet and windy conditions, 16 in a few days is quite tragic (then again any loss of life is).

Do not think he is forecasting the weather, he is statistically trying to predict it.

Not really, it is like saying winter will be cold and summer will be hot, statistically you will be right much of the time, but maybe not all of it, forecasting is taking IMO a far more in depth approach.

I agree,  using one form of statt is not the best way to forecast, of which i presume he is trying to do. Posted Image

Reading the Express story, came cross the following:

".....the procession of low pressure systems will finally slow down, giving way to calmer weather, with softer outbreaks of rain."

What's a softer outbreak of rain when it's at home?

Light rain perhaps? :)

I'll always remember an episode of The Darling Buds of May where the light rain was described to be: "as soft as cobwebs". :)

UK storms: Weather hits travel as many return to work

The latest storm to hit the UK is causing disruption for many returning to work after the Christmas break. Roads are closed and train services are cancelled or delayed in some areas.

It comes amid a fresh warning that "colossal waves" whipped up by winds of up to 70mph are likely to cause more flooding in some coastal areas. There are about 110 flood warnings in place in England, Scotland and Wales, and one severe - indicating "danger to life" - on the Lower Stour in Dorset. Western and southern areas are bearing the brunt of the latest severe weather, and flooding could be worse than that seen in recent days.

The travel disruption includes:

Damage to railway lines caused by recent high winds and heavy rain is affecting Arriva Trains Wales services in many parts of Wales
First Great Western is advising passengers to Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset or Hampshire to leave as early as possible because of potential flooding
South West Trains services between Fulwell in south-west London and Shepperton in Surrey are unable to run due to flooding
Buses are replacing trains on Northern Rail services between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness
Island Line services on the Isle of Wight are suspended until further notice because of severe flooding in the Ryde area
A recent landslip caused by poor weather means buses are replacing Southern trains between Horsham and Dorking
Train operators are running planned timetables but some routes are being affected by problems caused by previous storms, National Rail says
Major roads in areas including Pembrokeshire, West Sussex, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Somerset and Devon are closed because of flooding

People living along the coast of Wales are bracing themselves for the risk of flooding with strong winds and more rain forecast
Police have issued a flood warning for parts of Belfast and the Ards peninsula Surfers are being warned not to take risks as waves of up to 30ft (10m) hit Devon and Cornwall

'Lethal' waves

BBC forecaster John Hammond said there was no good news for exposed places around southern and western coasts where there would be "colossal waves". "Add on top of that high spring tides again - and very, very strong winds of up to 70mph - and here's your recipe for scenes similar, or perhaps even worse, than those we've seen over the last couple of days." He added: "These waves are going to be absolutely lethal if you get in the way of them."

The Met Office issued a warning of gusts of up to 70mph for Britain's west coast and the east coast of Northern Ireland on Monday. It said a large, deep depression in the Atlantic had been "whipping waves up" out at sea and these would come into western and southern coastal areas of the UK as a large swell on Monday. "This, combined with waves driven by the winds in UK waters on Monday, will generate wave heights of 7-10m over parts of western Scotland, Wales and south-west England, and 3-7m in much of the English Channel and Irish Sea," it added.

"The public should be aware of the dangers of waves crashing onshore and over-topping shore lines and sea fronts." As well as the severe flood warning for Iford Bridge Home Park, Dorset, more than 90 flood warnings - meaning flooding is expected and immediate action is required - are in place in England and Wales. More than 230 flood alerts - meaning "flooding is possible, be prepared" - are also in place.

Residents in Dorset and Oxfordshire, already inundated by high waters, were again urged by the Environment Agency to prepare for "significant flooding" on the Thames, Dorset Stour and Frome. Flooding is also expected to continue on the Somerset Levels, and rivers in southern England, including the Severn, remain "very high". The BBC's Andrew Plant, in south Somerset, says the village of Muchelney has been cut off for about four days. "On a day when many people are just going back to work after Christmas and the new year, for people in Somerset the going is very difficult indeed - and for the villagers here they are not going anywhere anytime soon," he says.

In Scotland, 10 flood warnings are in place in Perth and Kinross while, elsewhere in Scotland, a further 15 flood alerts are in place. Strong winds and high tides have caused serious flooding in County Down and sandbags have been distributed in a number of towns close to the county's coastline amid fears of further problems. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of winds for Northern Ireland.

Polar Vortex: NFL Fans Brave -26C Wind Chill

Diehard fans have braved freezing temperatures and a wind chill of -26C (-14F) to watch an NFL playoff match in Wisconsin. The Green Bay Packers took on the San Francisco 49ers at their home field on Sunday night, in one of the coldest American football matches ever played. A phenomenon described as a polar vortex has plunged states in the north and northwest US into a deep freeze, causing transport chaos and school closures. Fans at the Packers' Lambeau Field swaddled themselves in multiple layers of thick clothing and covered themselves with blankets for the tie, which lasted around three hours. The 49ers' stars - who are more used to balmy California temperatures - wrapped up on the touchline in signature red blankets. Despite not being accustomed to the inclement weather, they won 23-20, putting them one step closer to February’s Super Bowl.

Freezing USA braced for -56C in the worst weather for 20 years

The US is facing killer temperatures lower than -56C in the worst weather for 20 years. A blast of polar air following snow in northern states is expected to push temperatures down to -35C (-31F). And with the windchill factor, the vortex of counterclockwise cold dense air could plunge them further to -56.7C. Treacherous travel conditions already disrupting north-eastern states are spreading to the north-west. In Aspen, Colorado, one person was killed and two were injured when a plane burst into flames after trying to land in snowy conditions.

Super soaker storm: 70mph gales and even more rain hits UK in new wave of extreme weather

BRITAIN faces a week of storm chaos with a fresh wave of extreme weather set to wreak havoc. With swathes of the country still flooded, experts fear a new round of 70mph gales and lashing rain will stretch the emergency services to breaking point. The worst winter storms for 20 years have already claimed at least three lives and caused millions of pounds worth of damage. Parts of Kent and Sussex were deluged with more than 6in of rain last month – more than double the December average. Flooding ruined Christmas for thousands of homes but last night the UK was placed on red alert again with the extreme weather rolling in causing misery for millions returning to work.

UK's in deep trouble: Britain now prepares for SNOW after worst floods in 40 years

BRITAIN is braced for 48 hours of flood hell as the worst storms for 40 years continued last night. Once the rains have stopped, we may face snow and ice with winds swinging round to the north. An Arctic blast could dump snow over a huge swathe of the UK, especially the north of England and Scotland. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, warned: “All we need is a change of wind direction to turn this rain into snow and that is what we are expecting. “We could see several inches across large parts of the UK thanks to freezing winds from the Arctic.â€

Interesting headlining story on Channel 4 News tonight showing the record breaking cold in USA. On Channel 4's website the coverage of the story includes a video.

http://www.channel4.com/news/us-snow-storm-polar-vortex-weather-deep-freeze-video

The United States is being gripped by record-breaking cold and snow as forecasters warn of life-threatening conditions and wind chill as low as 60 degrees below zero.

Icy conditions caused havoc across the midwest and thousands of flights were cancelled or delayed, days after the northeast was hammered by the first winter storm of the season.

Frostbite

"The coldest temperatures in almost two decades will spread into the northern and central US today behind an Arctic cold front," the National Weather Service said on Sunday. "Combined with gusty winds, these temperatures will result in life-threatening wind chill values as low as 60 degrees below zero."

In weather that cold, frostbite can set in on uncovered skin in a matter of minutes, experts warned.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton ordered all public schools in the state to be closed on Monday to protect children from dangerously cold weather.

Chicago public schools followed suit - reversing an earlier decision - saying in a statement on their website that it would be dangerous for children to commute to school amid sub-zero temperatures and high winds.

Polar vortex

The NWS said the widespread chill was a result of a relatively infrequent alignment of weather conditions, allowing the Arctic polar vortex to be displaced unusually far south.

Forecasters warned Chicago and Indianapolis could see overnight lows of minus 12F (-24C), Minneapolis minus 29F (-34C) and Fargo, North Dakota, minus 31F (-31C). The coldest temperature reported in the lower 48 states on Sunday was minus 40F (-40C) in the towns of Babbitt and Embarrass, Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service. Between 6 inches and a foot (15-30cm) of snow was predicted from Chicago to Detroit, AccuWeather said, while icy sleet and rain was forecast for much of the northeast, where a brief thaw was forecast before intense cold returned late Monday.

Officials closed several Illinois roads because of drifting snow, and warned residents to stay inside. Roads in the midwest were particularly dangerous, and officials in Missouri warned it was too cold for rock salt to be very effective.
