You couldn't really make it up. The media made more of a big deal about the slider back in December!!!

People I keep telling are just thinking it's going to be a bit cold and maybe a couple of snow showers. I actually blame the media that no one seems prepared. They cry wolf so many times and nothing happens. The one time they actually underplay it, we could have the wintriest weather period since 2010!

Humm , acuweather seems to think temperatures will be a couple degrees above freezing mid week ? , Suppose maybe in the Sun.... Seems reasonable to me although cloud cover may effect that later on....

You can't make that sh*t up!

If you can't understand the difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome and which is liberal and which is authoritarian then you really should not be making political decisions.

But of course I'm just a Russian bot, beep!

No, I'm not a lefty. If you really see politics in such binary terms then you have a lot learning to do. Read JJ Patrick's Alternative War then we'll chat. Alternatively, just be content that Le Pen, Assange and Farage are all Kremlin puppets.

Within a degree or so of the freezing mark doesn't necessarily mean a couple of degrees above freezing.

BBC monthly outlook

Saturday 24 February—Sunday 25 February
Increasingly cold but mainly dry and settled.

A vast high pressure area over Scandinavia will continue to intensify and extend its influence further west, so overhead the UK by Sunday. This will allow a fresh E to SE wind flow to develop, feeding in progressively colder air from the east as milder Atlantic air and associated fronts remain at bay well to the west of the UK. Whilst dry for much of the weekend, there will be an increased threat of snow showers drifting in from the east on Sunday night. Frost overnight will be the main hazard, with widespread sharp frosts (-4C to -6C quite widely, locally down to -9C). The cold air will be accentuated by the fresh easterly winds.

Monday 26 February—Sunday 4 March
Bitterly cold end to winter with snowfall.

The start of next week marks an uptick in the arrival of a very cold airmass from Scandinavia and N Russia. The UK is very likely to experience a severe episode of winter weather conditions, possibly with close to record cold for this time of year. Similar very cold easterly spells at this time of year in the past include February 1962 and 1986, and more recently 2005 and 2013.

Fresh E to NE winds will start to drive in lines of snow showers from the North Sea from the word go next week into the eastern half of Scotland and England. A few will filter further west, but will be much lighter here. Snow accumulations starting to occur on Monday, but there is a threat of a zone of more organised snow showers pushing SW across the UK on Monday night and Tuesday, which could give more widespread and significant snow accumulations - especially over eastern Scotland, north-eastern England and down through parts of the Midlands. However, there is uncertainty on amounts with weather models often having a poor handling on such situations several days ahead. There will also be the risk for a stream of snow showers into southern parts of SW England Tuesday night into Wednesday. Due to the cold and very dry air, the snow will be powdery in nature and will easily drift in the fresh NE winds. Severe frost overnight and daytime maxima struggling to rise above 0C, especially the higher parts of England.

Extreme wind chill values (feels like temperature) expected on Tuesday to Thursday (feeling like -10C to -14C). Regarding snowfall, it will still be the eastern half of the UK most exposed to frequent and heavy snow showers and disruptive accumulations midweek. However, there is the threat of a band of widespread and heavy snow, accompanied by fresh easterly winds, moving northwards over the southern half of the UK between Thursday night and Saturday, although confidence is very low on this potential event. Regardless of this, temperatures will remain well below average through the second half of next week.

Monday 5 March—Sunday 18 March
Gradually less cold, although still a snow risk.

Analysis of longer-range models suggests that there will be somewhat of a transition during the second week of March and more especially around mid-month. The strong high pressure over N Europe that was responsible for the severe cold outbreak at the start of March should weaken, opening the door to low pressure influence from the south (which will in the meantime give disturbed weather to S Europe). It is therefore likely to turn more unsettled with a greater frequency of wet and breezy days, and with cold air masses still lingering over the UK this will present the risk of further snow.

Indeed, there is the risk for further disruptive wintry weather entering the early part of the meteorological spring, with snow, ice and overnight frosts all possible as cold air is only gradually eroded by mild SW air flows. However, a repeat of the imminent significant cold weather is unlikely by the time we reach mid-March.

Next Update

How influential could the return of low pressure areas be by mid-March? Will we experience stormy conditions again after mid-month or will there be another late burst of wintry weather?

just scanned through this beeb news article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-43190440  and it contains this quote -

When surface temperatures are below freezing, snow is drier as it contains less water. This type of snow is powdery and does not stick together, the Met Office says. :cc_confused:

Apparently today on Jeremy Vine's Radio 2 lunchtime show, a BBC weather reporter seemed very confident about this Friday's event being "the biggest winter storm for 50 years".

Did anyone hear this ? Who was the BBC weather reporter? He/she doesn't write for the Express by some chance? :)

and the above quote wasn't strictly accurate, it was just bits and pieces, some injected into the chat by Vine.

Present indications are for further falls of heavy snow and windy conditions into Friday. With temperatures staying around freezing, especially over lying snow. Once again there will be an added wind chill factor, making it feel particularly cold, in fresh to strong and gusty easterly winds.

There is a level of uncertainty through the weekend with a complex area of low pressure to the south bringing further spells of wintry precipitation.

From Met Eireann.

Thats a small upgrade as yesterday they were suggesting a possible rise in temperatures in the south

BBC monthly outlook

Monday 5 March—Sunday 11 March
A reduced intensity of cold and snow

With the North Atlantic jet stream still predicted to be displaced well to the south of the UK (over Spain, France and Italy) early next week, we cannot expect a rapid change to mild conditions any time soon. Indeed, temperatures remain below average for early March and further overnight frosts expected, especially in the north. With low pressure areas nearby, further snowfall is expected, especially over northern hills, but the risk is much lower from the Midland southwards. Daytime temperatures should be a little higher than this week, rising to 4-7C quite widely, locally 8-9C in far SW. Winds are unlikely to be very strong and will be much lower than normal in the north.

Low pressure areas will continue to influence the UK during the end of next week, meaning that conditions will remain unsettled. While there is a good chance that winds will pick up at times, after the low wind speeds of earlier in the week, the threat of a strong wind event is low. Temperatures are expected to stay colder than normal for March, especially so over central and northern areas of the UK, with night frosts ongoing. Snowfall can still be expected, particularly on the northern edge of individual low pressure areas, but certainly a lower risk than the past few days.

Monday 12 March—Sunday 18 March
Classic springtime weather - a bit of everything!

The middle part of March will very likely see a real mixture of weather, as high pressure ridges alternate with low pressure influence. However, it seems more likely that the third week of March will be influenced by low pressure on many days, with above normal rainfall amounts, especially in the south. Temperatures struggling to rise above the seasonal average, and snow is still likely to be a threat over some northern hills. However, in the sunshine and out of the wind, it will likely feel quite pleasant and spring like. As we head through to late March, it is more likely that high pressure ridges will develop more widely close to the UK again. This could bring some chilly weather, with frost at night, but in the daytime sunshine, temperatures creeping into the teens.

Monday 19 March—Sunday 1 April
A chillier end to March

As we move towards the end of March, indications are that high pressure should become centred to the west over the mid-Atlantic. This could allow another wave of cold air to sink south across the UK, bringing below average temperatures and a risk of springtime frosts. Rainfall should be near to below normal. The greatest chance of occasional wet weather appears to be across the east rather than the west, but snow should be mostly restricted to northern hills.

Next Update

We will be trying to accurately predict where the high pressure ridges will end up being located during the next few weeks. Wind direction is very important at this time of year for dictating temperature and whether we will see warm sunny days, or cold frosty ones under a high pressure area!
