Oh help. Yes, just seeing this on the TV news. :(

90 miles from Fukushima, but no extra effects on that.

Seems a deep one though at c. 25 miles so i hope that helps

to limit damage ..

Latest talk is of a 6' tsunami warning.

Tsunami warning upgraded to 2 metres now (ah, BL and I must be watching the same news bulletin). Apparently it's already struck the coast.

Oh great, Onagawa nuclear power station (which caught fire on March 11 and was shut down) has lost two of its three external power lines that were being used to pump coolant.

Unfortunate that another quake has happened again even though last time they warned another big one was coming, pleased that there's been a chance for a slight recovery after the last quake or it could have been a much worse situation

The Tokyo Electric Power company has announced that the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear power plants have not been damaged by 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan Thursday night.

The earthquake occurred at 11:32 pm local time, its epicenter was located 40 km off the east coast of Japan below the sea bed, Japanese state TV NHK reported.

A tsunami warning has been issued as a result of the new strong earthquake; a one-meter high tsunami is expected to hit the coast of northeastern Japan.

Japan's meteorological agency has urged evacuation of the coastal areas of the Miyagi prefecture.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has announced that the new earthquake has not affected the situation in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was badly damaged by the March 11 earthquake ushering into one of the world's worst nuclear crises ever.

All TEPCO workers from Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini have taken shelter, and are reported to be safe.

A spokesperson of TEPCO announced on NHK TV that the company is continuing its water injection of reactors 1, 2, and 3 at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP as well as the injection of nitrogen into reactor 1, which are part of its measures to contain the crisis situation caused by the March 11 earthquake.

The Onagawa NPP, however, has been affected as only one of the three power transmission lines of the plant remains functioning. According to the authorities, it is sufficient to maintain the operations on the spot. The three reactors at Onagawa were turned off after the March 11 earthquake.

The Japan nuclear safety agency has announced that no radiation leaks have been detected.

On the BBC satellite news channel you can see some

huge explosion on the horizon, a white light .

Presumably a power station as then most of the

lights across the city go out.

Tentative signs?

Japan on Friday signalled it would lift some restrictions on produce from areas near the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant that were imposed due to concerns about radiation contamination. Restrictions on milk produced in Fukushima prefecture would be lifted, along with those placed on spinach and kakina, a leafy green vegetable, top government spokesman Yukio Edano said. "The government has received requests for lifting shipping bans on milk produced (in seven municipalities) in Fukushima prefecture and spinach and kakina vegetables from Gunma prefecture," Edano said. "I understand that this produce satisfies conditions for the bans to be lifted."

The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and deadly tsunami on March 11 severely damaged the Fukushima nuclear plant, which is leaking harmful radioactivity that has prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of local residents. The government had halted shipments of untreated milk and many vegetables from Fukushima and other neighbouring prefectures after detecting radiation levels above the legal limit.

Edano said the process of lifting bans was one about which the government had to be cautious and he warned rice - the staple of the Japanese diet - was still restricted in the area. "Authorities are now inspecting the levels of radiation in soil so as to decide whether farmers can start planting rice in areas concerned," he said. "The government will restrict farmers from planting rice in areas where produced rice will highly likely be contaminated beyond the limit under the Food Sanitation Law."

News that the ban could be eased came as India - the first nation to impose a blanket ban on the import of Japanese food -- said it was lifting its own restrictions. New Delhi said it would demand "radiation free" certificates with Japanese shipments. "It was decided that a blanket suspension of imported food items from Japan is not warranted as of now. We will monitor the situation every week," a senior official at the trade ministry told AFP in the Indian capital. "We will ask the Japanese authorities to provide a certificate to prove that the imported food items are radiation free," he said.

Several countries, including China, Taiwan, Singapore and the United States, have banned shipments of produce from areas near the stricken plant.

Aftershock update on Japan's N P Plants:

Japan's nuclear safety agency said facilities along the north-east coast were under control. Back-up diesel generators kicked in at several plants after external power was lost. Operations have been suspended at all nuclear power plants from Aomori to Ibaraki prefectures since the 11 March quake, but electricity is still crucial to keep the cooling systems operating.

At the crippled Fukushima nuclear power station workers briefly retreated to a quake-proof shelter. The plant's operator later said there was no sign problems there were any worse. No new irregularities were detected in radiation readings or at the facilities, the firm said.

Will Japan ever stop shaking?

A mysterious flashing light was captured on video over Japan on Thursday, but what was it?

post-10773-0-68168000-1302289952_thumb.j

There have been several theories put forward; The most widely circulating explanation was that this was an 'earthquake light' - literally a light that appears in the sky during times of seismic activity. Another possible theory for the burst of light is that it was some kind of electrical explosion. It's been speculated that the flash was an electrical transformer exploding after being struck by the quake. Many commentators, including oddball conspiracy theorist David Icke, have said the footage was evidence of 'Haarp' (High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program). A quick YouTube search reveals a spate of alien sightings in the build up to the Japan earthquake, with little green men spotted above Kyoto and the Sakurajima Volcano. Even Chinese news agency Xinyua reported UFOs flying over Mount Fuji in February. An alien spacecraft was also spotted during recent Japanese news coverage of the Earthquake, but this was later confirmed to be a helicopter.

This light is what I referred to in a post (above) but couldn't find a link with pictures.

Seems very likely to be an electrical station blow-up as as soon as it occurs the

city lights fail in the foreground.

(Aliens indeed!)

The aftershocks info is interesting too, thanks.

I think the majority are away from Tokyo not towards it, thankfully.

'Ten years' to decommission nuclear plant

Japanese reactor maker Toshiba says it could decommission the earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in about 10 years, a third quicker than the US Three Mile Island plant.

The work would involve removing the fuel rods from their containers and the spent fuel rods from the storage pools from four of the plant's reactors and demolishing facilities, Kyodo news agency reported.

However, chief cabinet secretary Yukio Edano said it was too soon to have a timetable for decommissioning.

"The Japanese government has always hoped to draft a detailed [decommissioning] roadmap," he said on Friday.

"But the very fact that the reactors are unstable puts us in a situation where we have to continue to debate whether we can issue a responsible outlook."

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco), said it would continue an operation to dump 11,500 tonnes of low-level radioactive water from the plant into the sea until Sunday.

The operation had been expected to last until Saturday, but Tepco said the work was delayed by a powerful aftershock on Thursday.

This is just going backwards and forwards now:

The evacuation area around Japan's crippled nuclear plant will be expanded to selected town and villages beyond the current 20-kilometer radius zone around the plant.

Officials announced the decision Monday, exactly one month after the massive earthquake and tsunami that sparked the nuclear crisis. Across Japan, citizens paused and offered prayers at 2:46 p.m. local time (0546 UTC), the precise moment of the 9.0-magnitude earthquake. A subsequent tsunami washed away whole towns and villages along the country's northeast coast. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said residents should prepare to evacuate from certain towns and villages outside the existing evacuation zone as soon as radiation levels exceed pre-determined levels. He said the government will coordinate with municipal officials in those areas and that residents should wait for further instructions.

Edano said residents living between 20 and 30 kilometers from the stricken Fukushima plant should be packed and ready to leave on short notice if the situation at the plant deteriorates. He said those who are ill or have small children should leave the zone in advance of any emergency. Earlier Monday, Prime Minister Naoto Kan thanked foreign nations for their assistance in signed newspapers ads around the world. During a visit to the disaster zone a day earlier, he promised to work as quickly as possible to provide housing for the survivors and promised them his government "will never abandon you."

Massive cargo plane transports $2m remote-controlled concrete pump to stricken Japanese nuclear plant

A massive Russian cargo plane has been used to pick one of the world's largest concrete pumps to pour water on the stricken nuclear power plant in Japan.

The 95-ton pump is mounted on a 26-wheel truck and can be operated from two miles away by remote control, allowing it to shoot water into the damaged reactors.

If necessary, it could also be used to entomb one of the damaged nuclear reactors in concrete.
