The Moon is closest to Earth during the UK early evening and the moon will be rising from the east, so there are chances of seeing this. So it doesn't have to be completely clear all night, it will be more dramatic at moonrise rather than higher up anyway.

The odds of seeing that look slim now. It's almost completely overcast here! :(

Well at least you've got an orange moon. I could take a pic of a normal looking moon to make yours look better if you so wish. At least your pic is interesting.

Beautifully clear here in W. London (that's a first in about 3 years), but tbh, it doesn't look any bigger than normal.

It's 12% larger.

But it's not that much closer than normal in all honesty.

Was that it? I was expecting something spectacular that might have been something unusual (like most nights)

Seriously though, I swear the moon has been larger (assuming that's what happens when it is closer to earth) than that last night?!!

Does that mean you've not looked at the flush of new leads across the Arctic ice pack?

I must admit I was expecting something bigger and seem to think we have had harvest moons that appeared larger in the sky. Oh well, only another 5 years to go until the next one:

Yesterday afternoon five different vessels got into distress in the busy shipping lanes of the Solent, at the Needles on the western side of the Isle of Wight. Coastguards suggested that they were caught out by Saturday evening's "supermoon", which caused sandbanks to be exposed by low tides.

One of the ships was the 2,900-tonne cargo ship Paula-C, on its way to Cowes with a crew of nine. They were forced to wait for a high tide to lift them clear of a shingle bank. A 25-foot yacht ran aground and three other vessels were also marooned on sand and shingle banks that normally lie submerged. A spokesman for the Coastguard said: "We checked them all and there were no injuries, just some surprise at being caught out like this. Blame it on the moon."

What an overrated episode. When I saw the full moon on Saturday night it certainly seemed a bit bigger than usual, but I suspect my imagination may have been playing tricks with me: either way the difference was pretty negligible, and certainly not significant enough for media outlets to devote entire galleries to it. I noticed a lot of photos on the BBC News website were manipulated to make the moon look ridiculously and impossibly large (nice photos nonetheless though).

I strongly suspect that the saturated coverage of this particular lunar juncture was triggered by the the pseudoscientific scaremongering which preceded it.
