I was thinking more along these lines.

The ecliptic is the apparent annual path of the sun as projected onto the celestial sphere. Inclined to the celestial equator by 231/2 deg. because of the tilt of the earth’s axis of rotation , the ecliptic intersects the celestial equator at two points, called equinoxes. The northernmost point on the ecliptic is the summer solstice, and the corresponding southernmost point is the winter solstice.
