Later in the period, conditions are most likely to remain unsettled, with the southwest again likely to see the most frequent rain. Temperatures remaining close to average and occasionally ratrher mild in the south, but perhaps turning rather cold at times towards the northeast with a risk of overnight frosts.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 19 Dec 2012 to Friday 28 Dec 2012:

It is likely to remain unsettled through the whole period, with occasional bands of persistent and often heavy rain crossing the country, mainly affecting England and Wales, and with a risk of hill snow occasionally over Scotland and Northern England. This rain may be accompanied with strong winds and perhaps gales in exposed northern and western areas at times. Clear spells and scattered showers are likely to intersperse these bands of rain, with an increasing chance of overnight frost returning to some parts during the weekend and into the following week. Temperatures are likely to stay generally near or just above average, at least until the following week, when there is a chance of briefly seeing less unsettled and colder conditions, especially across northern parts of the UK.

And another p*** poor December passes us by.

December's CET is running 2.1c below normal that's hardly poor

I know snow has been low this month but isn't February the month when we get the coldest and snowiest weather normally?

I 'll guarantee you it won't be by the end of this month Gavin. Having a CET running at 2.1c below normal means diiddly squat when the conditions at the surface paint a different story.

Geoff, maybe if you could explain why this month is better then please do.

I wouldn't have thought 2 metres would make much of a difference, the temperatures are measured 2m above the surface.

UK Outlook for Sunday 23 Dec 2012 to Tuesday 1 Jan 2013:

The first week should start very unsettled and windy, with occasionally heavy rain pushing northeastwards. This may fall as snow for a time in the initially colder north and northeast, mainly over hills. Brighter, showery and colder conditions will follow for most parts, with the showers likely to give further wintry weather over northern hills. Further locally heavy rain is likely from midweek, separated by drier but showery interludes, with the best drier weather likely to be in the east. Strong to gale-force winds are also likely in places, but especially in the northwest. Temperatures will be mostly near or perhaps a little above normal, although patchy overnight frost remains likely, a pattern that should continue in the run-up to the new year, with similarly unsettled conditions likely to prevail.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 26 Dec 2012 to Friday 4 Jan 2013:

Some bright spells across the UK on Boxing Day but also some showers, most likely over northern and eastern parts. Meanwhile, in contrast to last Boxing Day's very mild weather temperatures this Boxing Day will be near normal with a frosty start for some. The rest of next week, including the weekend, is then shaping up to turn much more unsettled again as spells of dull, wet and windy weather sweep across the UK, interspersed by clearer, showery periods. Further bouts of heavy rain should then be expected, as well as occasional gales in exposed western areas, whilst over high ground in the north some snow is likely at times. Conditions then look likely to remain unsettled in the run-up to New Year.

UK Outlook for Thursday 27 Dec 2012 to Saturday 5 Jan 2013:

A drier interlude for many areas on Thursday. However, this does look short-lived as further wet and windy weather is expected to spread to most regions on Friday, with conditions remaining unsettled throughout the remainder of the Christmas and New Year period. Initially, and again towards the end of this period, the focus of the heaviest rain looks to shift further north to affect more northwestern parts of the UK, however for a time, especially towards the end of December, southwestern areas do to be look rather more prone to heavy rain once again. It will often be windy, with a risk of gales, especially in the northwest, but on the whole remaining fairly mild, with a limited risk of frost.

Well today's update certainly looks more promising than the abysmal model outlooks this morning! Although, still not good for the flooded areas in the west and south west.

UK Outlook for Monday 31 Dec 2012 to Wednesday 9 Jan 2013:

Largely cloudy on Monday with rain for many, heaviest across northern and western areas. It will be windy, with gales across some western areas, although temperatures will be near if not just above average. As the rain spreads south and east on Tuesday, brighter but showery conditions will follow from the northwest. It will turn colder behind the rainband, with showers turning wintry on hills, giving an increased risk of frost and icy patches. Through the middle of next week, further bands of rain accompanied by strong winds will cross the country. However, whilst the unsettled conditions are likely to continue across northern areas through the remainder of the period, southern areas are likely to see lengthier spells of dry weather with lighter winds. Temperatures will be largely near normal.

UK Outlook for Thursday 3 Jan 2013 to Saturday 12 Jan 2013:

A quieter and drier spell of weather is expected through this outlook period, especially in the south where the ground is fairly saturated. Generally a good deal of cloud across the UK throughout. Over northern and some western parts, the cloudy is likely to be thick enough for occasional spells of rain, perhaps even some heavier rain at times for western Scotland. Elsewhere, conditions will be largely dry, with the best of any breaks tending to be to the lee of higher ground. Also a risk of mist or fog patches where any cloud breaks occur overnight. Perhaps some rain extending further southeast around the middle of the period, but only small amounts. Daytime temperatures will generally be above average and nights largely mild and frost free.
