UK Outlook for Thursday 17 Dec 2015 to Saturday 26 Dec 2015:

A generally unsettled, mild, period with bands of rain or showers moving north and east across most parts of the UK. This rain will be heaviest and most prolonged in the west and southwest. There is also a risk of gales in the north and west. Thereafter, the west and northwest will remain unsettled with further rain which may turn wintry on higher ground in the north, but also with some brief, more settled, colder interludes. Winds will generally be strong, possibly gale force at times too. Further south and east, although some rain is possible at times, longer dry periods are likely with some sunshine by day, and colder nights. These conditions will then persist through the Christmas period.

UK Outlook for Saturday 19 Dec 2015 to Monday 28 Dec 2015:

Exceptionally mild across all parts on Saturday, but also windy with gales in the west. A period of rain which could be heavy in the north and west, is expected to move eastwards, turning lighter in the east and southeast. Less mild and more showery weather should spread across all parts on Sunday, with the showers perhaps wintry over high ground in the north. The start of next week and the Christmas period will continue unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain across all parts, with the rain heaviest and most persistent in the north and west. Any snowfall should be limited to high ground in the north. It will also be windy at times with gales, again the north and west being most prone. Temperatures generally above average.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 29 Dec 2015 to Tuesday 12 Jan 2016:

A continuation of mainly mild weather is expected over the New Year period and into the start of 2016. It is expected to remain unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed with some drier and brighter interludes, with the heaviest and most persistent of the rainfall occurring in western parts. It is also expected to be windy at times, with a risk of occasional gales or severe gales, particularly in the north and west. There is a signal for drier weather in southern parts from the New Year onwards as pressure builds in the south, although northern parts are more likely to remain unsettled.

What a joke! If that Euro high continues to dominate into January, and as days start to get a bit longer and nights shorter,  expect temps will be on the up in the South, 16-18c?

UK Outlook for Friday 1 Jan 2016 to Friday 15 Jan 2016:

A continuation of mainly mild and unsettled weather is expected as we move into the new year with showers or longer spells of rain, interspersed with some drier and brighter interludes. The heaviest and most persistent of the rainfall will probably occur in western parts, while eastern areas could see some longer dry spells. It is also expected to be windy at times, with a risk of occasional gales or severe gales, particularly in the north and west. As January progresses there is an increasing likelihood of pressure rising in the south, leading to drier weather here, but also the risk of overnight frost and fog. Unsettled conditions seem likely to persist throughout in the north.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 23 Dec 2015 to Friday 1 Jan 2016:

It will become colder on Wednesday with a mixture of sunshine and blustery showers, these heavy at times with a risk of thunder, and wintry over northern hills. On Christmas Eve mild, wet and windy weather will return northeastwards across the country. Rain will be heaviest and most persistent in the north and west, with the best of the drier conditions across southeast England. Thereafter, the weather will remain unsettled, with spells of mild and wet weather interspersed by colder, showery conditions with snow on northern hills. It will also be windy at times with gales in places, again the north and west being most prone. Temperatures will be closer to average than of late, but still generally above, with only occasional, brief colder spells.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 6 Jan 2016 to Wednesday 20 Jan 2016:

In general as we head through the first half of January we are likely to see predominantly unsettled conditions nationwide. Overall, above average temperatures are most probable, accompanied by wetter than average conditions in the west and northwest. On the other hand there may well be slightly drier than average conditions at times in the east and southeast. Then as we head into mid January there are signs of a trend to somewhat drier conditions, especially in the south and southwest, although confidence on this is currently only low. The chance of a prolonged cold spell taking hold is currently considered to be low.

UK Outlook for Sunday 27 Dec 2015 to Tuesday 5 Jan 2016:

On Sunday there is likely to be a slow-moving band of rain lying across parts of the United Kingdom. Mild conditions are likely in the south but the temperature should be closer to normal in the north. From Monday the latest indications are that a south to southwesterly airflow will become established bringing changeable conditions. Western areas will be most prone to outbreaks of rain, which could be heavy at times, whereas the east will have the best of any drier, brighter spells. It will probably be generally windy with gales at times, especially in the west. These changeable conditions are likely to persist into the New Year. Overall, above average temperatures are expected, although eastern areas may become a bit colder at times.

UK Outlook for Friday 8 Jan 2016 to Friday 22 Jan 2016:

As we head out of early January and towards the middle part of the month conditions are likely to remain predominantly unsettled nationwide. Overall, above average temperatures are most probable, accompanied by a continuation of the grey, cloudy and wetter than average conditions in the west and northwest. It may well, however, be slightly drier than average at times in the east and southeast, with the best of any sunshine most likely here as well. The chance of any prolonged cold spell is currently considered to be low, but occasional snowfall for northern hills and the odd frosty morning are still likely.

Temperatures will remain mostly milder than average for the time of year, although there may be one or two isolated overnight frosts, as well as some occasional snowfall over northern hills.

UK Outlook for Wednesday 30 Dec 2015 to Friday 8 Jan 2016:

Wet, very windy and mild conditions are expected to affect the country on Wednesday. Gales or severe gales are likely in places along with a period of heavy rain, especially on western hills. Winds should ease later on Wednesday as it turns colder with blustery showers, which could turn wintry over hills in the north. Westerly or southwesterly winds are expected to dominate through the rest of the period, bringing more unsettled and often windy weather. The wettest and windiest weather is likely to occur in the north and west, where gales or severe are expected at times along with periods of heavy rain. UK Outlook for Friday 1 Jan 2016 to Sunday 10 Jan 2016:

A cold and locally frosty start to New Year's Day with sunny spells and largely dry weather for many. However, there could be a few showers in the north and west, where it will be quite breezy with a risk of hill snow. A cold, dry and bright start to the weekend in the southeast but with a return to wet, mild and windy conditions across the north and west. The wet and mild weather may spread south on Sunday. The rest of the period looks like seeing mostly westerly winds with showers or longer spells of rain, particularly across the north and west. Temperatures around average to above average with any frost or hill snow largely restricted to the north.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 12 Jan 2016 to Tuesday 26 Jan 2016:

The middle part of the month is expected to remain unsettled, with wet and windy weather mainly in the north and west. Drier in the south and east with a higher likelihood of more settled conditions. The northwest to southeast split in the weather is then expected to persist through the remainder of the month, with rainfall around average across most of the country. Temperatures should be generally mild, but closer to average in the north, where there is a risk of snow. Drier, clearer conditions especially in the east could give way to the odd frosty night, although there is a low chance of any prolonged cold spells.

UK Outlook for Sunday 3 Jan 2016 to Tuesday 12 Jan 2016:

Remaining essentially unsettled across all parts throughout the period, with further bouts of wet and windy weather to come. The rain occasionally heavy and accompanied by gales, although much quieter, brighter weather can be expected in-between frontal systems. Still rather mild at times, particularly in the south, but generally feeling colder than of late with a greater risk of frost at night during quieter interludes. The rain also turning to snow at times in the north and northeast, mainly on higher ground, but with the risk increasing at low levels too later in the period as the potential for much colder weather increases. Looking at the period as a whole, temperatures are expected to be around average for January, though perhaps slightly above average towards the southwest.

The best update by a long chalk for those anticipating the chances of something substantially colder this winter. The Met Office is often very reserved, if they are seeing potential there must be strong signals in the offing..
