September is a month that showed a major warming trend from around 1997 onwards. Despite the increase in overall warmth from 1988, September showed no warming trend until around 1997, indeed with a run of average to cool Septembers from 1992 to 1996; however, since then there have been numerous very warm Septembers and many have seen significant heatwaves for so late in the season; although the last three years have seen temperatures a bit closer to normal. It is also the truth that we have not had a significantly cooler than average September since 1994 (more than 0.2*C below the 1961-90 mean).

13.2C for me thanks...

Going by the GFS 0z, the opening 2 days of September look like averaging around the high 13s, which would be slightly below average for the beginning of the month.

Looks to me like there could be some blocking developing to the east with low pressure to the west allowing for some warm southerlies. I think the warm weather will last into the 3rd week before more unsettled and cooler conditions take over. I'll go for 15.2c.

Im really losing confidence in my slightly below average outcome with signs of a west based -NAO/-AO and Scandi Ridge for September. Sorry to cause trouble but I'll raise my guess to 15.5C.

The GFS 12z would have us in the high 15s by the 5th.

Perhaps a few (including myself) might want to reconsider their low CET guesses in the coming days!?

Unless theres some serious changes in the next couple of days, I'll certainly be revising mine. :D

There are definitely signs of the Atlantic invigorating but also the high proving a bit of a pain. Very similar to the start of July 2009 with a burst of southerly winds ahead of the Atlantic busting in. Fingers crossed.

It will be interesting to see what the Atlantic lows do. If they dive Northwest-Southeast into Europe we could be on track for the coolest September since 1993 however if the Atlantic lows stall to the west in that cold pool to the west we could have a very warm September like 2005 or even 2006.
