Sky News are doing a live link in Calais, and I'm sure I heard someone say "Another Volcano's erupted" Behind or out of view of the camera!? Something along those lines I'm sure.

If this is another eruption im not surprised after the big increase in seismic activity lately. On Wikipedia, Hekla is apparently known as the "Gateway to Hell".

Hmm whatever is in that image seems to have about the same activity as the current volcano, just further away.. sure it's not just the same volcano?

Think you might be right....isn't it just Eyja from a different angle?

Hekla is nothing to worry about even if it is erupting its not likely to produce much in the way of ash plumes.

but still intresting but nothing serious about this volcano.

Seems everyone has crashed the camera lol

Helka is one of the most active in Iceland, if it has erupted it may not amount to much. Need to wait for confirmed reports.

I guess Reuters will have to carry the can if confirmed it's not Hekla. Sheez.

Imagine a whale moving through the ocean at 20 knots. Whales survive by filtering plankton. Every day one whale consumes something like a tonne of plankton, just by moving through the water and filtering it for plankton.

Let's say the whale can move faster than 20 knots - 40 knots. Do you think the amount of plankton the whale would eat in one day would be the same, more or less? The whale would eat more plankton the faster it swam. Same principle with planes and the sand-blasting effect on jet engines.

F-16s can fly up to mach 1.6. Sand not only enters the jet engine much faster at high speeds but sand enters at a higher density because the jet engine is going faster. It's like when you walk in the rain you don't get your front splattered, but when you run you feel the air rushing by your face and you get your clothes drenched.

What is true for 1100mph jet fighters might not be true for transport planes which fly at 500 mph, or less. Transport planes have flown with no dust effects. That is the evidence that matters to civil aviation.

bloody hell have you been on the glue.what kind of comparison is that to use lol.

After a light shower this morning, the deposits of ash on the cars has formed a dusting.

Seems the camera was pointed the other way (and was incorrectly labeled)

Well if seismic activity is high, perhaps this is the quiet before the storm?

Is it just me, or have the webcams at that Mila site been down for ages?? cc_confused.gif

I havent been able to view any of the views of Eyja since about 2pm today.. Its was a pretty good day to view the volcano as well with not too much cloud. Anyone else having trouble with the site saying their server being down?

no reports of a second eruption I can find

UPDATE: It's apparently a false alarm. An Icelandic Broadcasting Service camera was apparently pointed at Eyjafjallajökull and but it was labeled Hekla.

Yes embarrassing cock up.

Hekla eruptions can be fairly large VEI4 as well and occur with little warning. Outside eruptions Helka is aseismic so no earthquake activity is noted despite a large network of recording equipment around the volcano.

From 1970 the volcano started erupting every ten years so if it keeps the cycle up it's due again.

http://www.jonfr.com/ He's had a look and says Hekla is sleeping like a babe at the moment. Earthquake swarms are a sign of trouble for this one.

Good blog - he's one of the regular contributors to the Eruptions site and has his own seismometers: http://www.simnet.is/jonfr500/earthquake/tremoren.htm
