Fuego volcano (Guatemala): increasing activity

Sunday Dec 15, 2013 17:45 PM | BY: T

Fuego volcano this morning with strombolian activity and the lava flow

An increase in activity was indicated by the volcano observatory today. The explosions (strombolian type) at the summit vent occur now at rates of 6-8 per hour and lava effusion increased. Currently, the lava flow is headed towards the Cenize canyon on the SW side. It is a possibility that this activity continues to build up towards another paroxysm, in which case the occurrence of pyroclastic flows (mainly by collapsing lava flow fronts) is a likely and dangerous scenario.

Explosions, ash and lava flow emission at Etna's New SE crater at dawn

MODIS / Terra satellite image 14 Dec showing a plume drifting N from Puyehue

Puyehue-Cordón Caulle (Central Chile and Argentina): A significant ash(?) plume was spotted on Terra's satellite images yesterday afternoon. Since there are no other reports suggesting that a (larger in this case) eruption has occurred (e.g. heat signals, eyewitness reports, webcam), it seems likely that the plume was from wind-mobilized ash from the 2011-12 eruption.
If new evidence of an eruption becomes available, we'll follow up, and please post a comment if you have other data.
A passenger on a cruise ship reported: "Cruise ship Seabourn Quest sailing out of Castro, Chile, just passed what we believe is the actively erupting Chaiten volcano. Eruption ash cloud clearly visible throughout sunset, 8.15 to 9.00pm, 12/14/2013. Pyroclastic cloud going down left (north) flank. Secondary vents erupting on the flanks."

Etna (Sicily, Italy): The 20th paroxysm at the New SE crater in 2013 began yesterday evening and ended at dawn, shortly after reaching its peak. The eruption lasted relatively long, but was relatively weak in intensity (compared to previous paroxysms). It produced only relatively low pulsating lava fountains with associated ash plumes and a small lava flow to the SE towards the Valle del Bove.
Tremor has dropped sharply, but at the moment of updating, strombolian explosions, ash emission and the effusion of the lava flow continue at reduced level.

The following time-lapse video, seen as time-lapse from the Radiostudio7 webcam on Montagnola (from S), shows the slow build-up during the day with sporadic explosions, and the pulsating fountaining at night:

The eruption of the Mount Etna volcano in Sicily on Sunday forced the closure of nearby Catania airport because of the plumes of ash billowing into the sky, airport officials said. Twenty-one scheduled departures from Catania had to be scrapped and 26 arrivals re-routed to alternative destinations. The smaller airport of Comiso in the area was also closed down. Sac, the company that manages Catania airport, said in a statement that "the wind direction and intensity" meant the ash was a risk to flights and it had to close off its air space. Sac said it will review the situation on Monday. Etna is an active volcano and eruptions are frequent but the latest activity, which began on Saturday, is the most intense in months. The lava flow down one side of the mountain is visible from Catania and Taormina, a popular seaside resort. Three small earthquakes were also registered around the volcano on Sunday.

Current seismic signal of Fuego (FG3 station, INSIVUMEH)

Etna (Sicily, Italy): It seems that the latest, highly unusual paroxysm can be regarded as over. Lava effusion ceased (or almost completely ceased) over night and tremor has continued to drop to again low levels.

...16 Dec:

The activity has dropped although a small new fissure has now opened on the lower NE side of the cone, producing a small lava flow visible in the picture; whether it is the near end of the current episode or only a pause is difficult to say.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): Several ash plumes to altitudes of 17-20,000 ft (5-6 km) have been detected by VAAC Tokyo during the past 24 hours. Webcam images are mostly obscured by clouds, but glow can be sometimes seen at the lava dome. Most likely the ash plumes were generated by partial collapse events and/or explosions, which in turn might have been associated with new pyroclastic flows.

Nishino-shima (Volcano Islands, Japan): (16 Dec) Activity continues at the new island and has apparently picked up in strength again. Lava flows have created a significant new delta of new land during the past 3 days, enlarging the island to a current width measuring approx. 400 (E-W) by 300 (N-S) meters.

The Japanese Coast Guard posted an interesting video and report that also shows that sporadic strombolian explosions from the active vent continue along with lava effusion:

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): The Indonesian Volcanological Survey (VSI) informed in its latest press release that a significant increase in seismic activity was detected during the past days.

While the volcano has been relatively calm at the surface, producing only a dilute gas plume with some ash reaching about 1 km above the crater, the increase in earthquakes suggests that new magma is currently rising and could produce new (potentially large) explosions.

... [read more]

Fuego (Guatemala): (16 Dec) Activity remains elevated but stable; the lava flow increased its length a bit to 600 m this morning, while explosions have become a bit weaker and occurred at rates of 2-3 per hour. Many of them produce shock waves that rattle windows and roofs of houses in nearby village

Ash emissions from Galera yesterday (INGEOMINAS)

Etna (Sicily, Italy): (17 Dec) Weak lava effusion continues from the fissure on the lower NE flank of the New SE crater. Explosive activity seems to have ceased and tremor has descended back to low levels.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): Several ash plumes up to altitudes of 27,000 ft (8 km) altitude were spotted by VAAC Tokyo during the past 24 hours, indicating that activity at the growing lava dome in form of explosions and/or avalanches/pyroclastic flows remains elevated.

Dukono (Halmahera): A major eruption might have occurred at the volcano this morning: an ash plume rising to 45,000 ft (14 km) altitude and extending more than 100 km to the NW was reported by VAAC Darwin at 07:32 GMT this morning. If this IS a volcanic ash plume and not an unusually large storm cloud, it means that a major, possibly sub-plinian eruption has occurred at the volcano. We will update this post when more information is available, or post comments.

The advisory states:

CLOUD OBSERVED GROWING OVER VOLCANO SUMMIT AT LATER TIME THAN OTHER CONVECTION. SUSPECTED LOW LEVEL PLUME ALSO OBSERVED ON VISIBLE IMAGERY. HIGH LEVEL HEIGHT DERIVED FROM MTSAT-2 IR IMAGE

AND 18/0000Z MENADO SOUNDING.

Nevado del Huila (Colombia): No significant changes in the volcano's activity of degassing and small earthquakes have occurred during the past months. INGEOMINAS' alert level remains yellow.

Machin (Colombia): Seismic activity remains at slightly elevated levels, and INGEOMINAS keeps the volcano at yellow.

Galeras (Colombia): The volcano's activity has remained at similar levels as during the past weeks, with sporadic ash emissions such as yesterday, when a plume rose to up to 1 km above the crater.

Magma is slowly rising within the edifice, reflected also by low to moderate seismicity and SO2 emission values reported by INGEOMINAS.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): Volcanic activity at the surface (degassing) and inside (earthquakes) has remained comparably low.

During the last week, volcano-tectonic type earthquakes associated with rock fracturing within the volcanic structure occurred mainly in areas north, northeast and west of the Arenas crater at shallow depths between 2.8-4 km. The maximum magnitude recorded was a 2.8 ML (Local Magnitude) event at 13:27 (local time) on 14 December.

Cumbal (Colombia): INGEOMINAS reported slightly elevated seismic activity during the previous week at the volcano. Small earthquakes related to internal fluid movements are clustered at shallow depth (0-2 km) beneath the La Plazuela crater.

Sotará (Colombia): Internal (seismic) activity remains low, but above background and the volcano's status is unchanged at yellow.

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO OBSERVATORY DAILY UPDATE Sunday, December 22, 2013 8:48 AM HST (Sunday, December 22, 2013 18:48 UTC)

This report on the status of Kilauea volcanic activity, in addition to maps, photos, and Webcam images (available at http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/activity/kilaueastatus.php), was prepared by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO). All times are Hawai`i Standard Time.

KILAUEA VOLCANO (CAVW #1302-01-)

19°25'16" N 155°17'13" W, Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH

Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Activity Summary: Eruption at two locations continued with little change. The summit tiltmeter network recorded a steady tilt level, and the lava-lake level fluctuated only slightly. At the middle east rift zone, the Pu`u `O`o vent continued to feed the Kahauale`a 2 lava flow, which was active as small scattered breakouts burning forest to the northeast. Gas emissions remained elevated.

Recent Observations at Kilauea summit: The summit tiltmeters recorded no change in tilt level over the past day. The lava-lake level fluctuated slightly but was generally about 50 m (164 ft) below the floor of Halema`uma`u. Gas emissions continued to be elevated. Though not measured, a very small amount of ash-sized tephra (mostly fresh spatter bits and Pele's hair from the spattering sinks) was probably carried out of the vent with the gas and deposited onto nearby surfaces.

Seismic tremor levels were low and variable with several dropouts over the past day. 21 earthquakes were strong enough to be located beneath Kilauea Volcano in the past 24 hours: 4 within the upper east rift zone, 1 south of Pu`u `O`o on the middle east rift zone, 4 beneath the summit, 2 on Ka`oiki faults near Bird Park, and 10 scattered on south flank faults. GPS receivers spanning the summit caldera recorded line length changes that mimicked the short-term trends in tilt (DI tilt events) over the past month; the long-term, cross-caldera measurements indicate continued extension at a rate averaging 10 cm/yr (4 in/yr) since March, 2010.

Seismic unrest at El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) in 2011-13: updates

Update Mon 23 Dec 09:44

Map of recent earthquakes under El Hierro

GPS recordings (IGN)

The new earthquake swarm under the island's central-SE sector continues. So far, about 120 quakes of magnitudes above 1.8 including a handful of possibly felt ones (up to magnitudes 3.2) have occurred since yesterday morning.

Preliminary GPS data suggest a new phase of uplift has started as well, which supports the idea that a new magma intrusion is occurring at the base of the upper crust beneath the volcanic island.

New earthquake swarm
Update Sun 22 Dec 21:28

A new earthquake swarm started under the island today. The earthquakes are located at about 15 km depth under the southeastern central part of the island. IGN recorded more than 40 quakes with magnitudes up to 3.2 so far. Whether the earthquakes are related to new magmatic intrusions at depth is a unknown but a possible scenario.

GPS data of at least some stations seem to indicate some deformation, but this is not very clear.

MODIS hot spot data (past 7 days) for Brren Island volcano (ModVolc, Univ. Hawaii)

Etna (Sicily, Italy): No significant changes have occurred. Ash emissions, sometimes relatively strong, continued from the NE crater and the tremor shows a very slow gradual rising trend.

Nishino-shima (Volcano Islands, Japan): The new volcanic island continues to grow thanks to active lava flows and has now reached more than 50 meters and surpassed its mother island in height. Its continuing growth also makes it be at only about 50 meters shallow water distance from the Nishin-Jima island and it seems it might merge with it, rather than remaining an own new island, if activity continues.

Chaitén (Southern Chile and Argentina): The lava dome of the volcano has become more active recently. Incandescent spots are visible at night and a thermal anomaly is visible on satellite data. This suggests that new magma might be rising into the volcano. No explosive activity has (at least so far) occurred.

Palena (Southern Chile and Argentina): A pilot reported a volcanic ash cloud from the Palena volcano last evening. A picture from Andres Gillmore on twitter shows what in fact looks similar to an eruption plume, and that would mean that after Chaiten in 2008, a second volcano with no known historic eruptions has become active.

But at this point, it seems more likely that the ash cloud is from a large wildfire instead, in other words, there is no new volcanic eruption. SERNAGEOMIN has not reported on the event which supports this interpretation.

Barren Island (Indian Ocean): A significant thermal anomaly remains present at the volcano which is likely in some sort of eruptive activity (lava flows?). However, no plumes could be detected on satellite imagery. An aerial survey by the Indian Navy could give more clues what is going on.

Heard (Australia, Southern Indian Ocean): Hot spots at Mawson Peak volcano remain visible on satellite imagery, but there are no indications of lava flows. What typo of activity IS currently present on the volcano's summit is unknown.

A large earthquake of estimated magnitude 5.4 (USGS) occurred just minutes ago. USGS and EMSC place the quake at about 30 km NW of El Golfo at 22.8 km and 10 km depth, respectively, i.e. relatively far away from the area of the recent earthquake swarm and current inflation. However, these preliminary calculation might be updated in the coming hours, which will help understanding whether it is related to the current volcanic crisis on the island.

there is seismic activity taking hold at EL HIERRO volcano in the canary islands and I have watch several programmes on this in the past and this island could be very dangerous as it is splitting along the middle and there is thoughts and worrys that activity in this area could cause the island to fall in two slip into the atlantic and if this were to happen could cause big tsunami like waves to radiate out around the atlantic basin and could very well affect western areas of britian.

activity has really ramped up lately and have seen a 5.3 magnitude earthquake today which is certainly one of the strongest ever felt there if not the strongest so might be worth keeping a watch over as some have estimated possible big waves if this was to fall into the water.

Steaming Sinabung volcano this morning

Etna (Sicily, Italy): The volcano has remained mostly calm. Ash emissions from the NE crater decreased and tremor fluctuated at low levels over the holidays.

Kizimen (Kamchatka): Activity has picked up at the volcano again. An ash plume was reported this morning by VAAC Tokyo to 17,000 ft (5 km) altitude extending north. Webcam images show a significant steam plume which possibly contains ash.

This suggests that the lava dome might be entering a new phase of growth. KVERT still maintains the volcano at status "Green" (normal).

Karymsky (Kamchatka): Strombolian to mild vulcanian explosions continue at the volcano. VAAC Tokyo reported an ash plume at 15,000 ft (4,5 km) altitude drifting NW this morning.

Nishino-shima (Volcano Islands, Japan): The recently born new Niijima island merged with the main island Nishino-Jima yesterday. Both are in fact two summits of the same volcanic edifice. Activity continues to enlarge the new land by lava flows and occasional strombolian explosions.

The video from the day before, taken by Japanese Coast Guard, shows the situation immediately before the "contact".

Suwanose-jima (Ryukyu Islands): A small explosion occurred this morning (JST time) at the volcano; VAAC Tokyo reported an ash plume at 4,000 ft (1,2 km) altitude.

Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia): The volcano has been relatively calm and only produced a steam plume sometimes mixed with ash, but no new significant explosions. Local media talk about a new lava dome spotted at the summit, but evidence (weak red glow at night and blurred photos etc) is still very weak and should be confirmed.

On the other hand, it is a perfectly realistic scenario that the volcano, after having "cleared its throat" during the recent explosions, continues to erupt viscous lava that rises slowly and builds a lava dome at the vent(s).

Paluweh (off Flores Island, Indonesia): After several months with little activity, an ash plume was spotted again by VAAC Darwin yesterday, with an estimated altitude of 10,000 ft (3 km). The new lava dome probably continues to produce occasional collapse events and explosions.

Dukono (Halmahera): Explosive activity continues to be elevated. Several ash plumes to estimated 10,000 ft (3 km) altitude were spotted on satellite imagery by VAAC Darwin over the past days.
