Ash explosion from Ubinas yesterday (INGEMMET)

Suwanose-jima (Ryukyu Islands): Eruptions continue on the remote island. An explosion this morning produced an ash plume rising to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude (VAAC Tokyo).

Rabaul (Tavurvur) (New Britain, Papua New Guinea): The activity at Tavurvur has increased since the second half of August, a recent report by ECHO (European Commission department of Humanitarian Aid) mentions.

Ash fall from Tavurvur forced the suspension of outpatient services at Nonga base hospital in Rabaul on 2 Sep. It is expected that more than 3,000 people are affected and in need of clean drinking water.

Batu Tara (Sunda Islands, Indonesia): Explosions producing ash plumes large enough to show up on satellite data have become more frequent over the past week. An eruption yesterday produced a plume rising to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) altitude, VAAC Darwin reported.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): Activity has decreased compared to the strong episode between 30 August and 2 September. Continuous seismic tremor suggests that lava effusion, accompanied by minor ash emission, continues.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity continues at generally low levels. The rate of small emissions of steam and gas has risen to more than 5 per hour during yesterday, and a number of small volcanic-tectonic quakes and episodes of tremor were recorded.

At night, incandescence is visible at the volcano's summit, indicating that magma continues to arrive there.

Pacaya (Guatemala): Mild strombolian activity continues from the Mackenney crater. At night, incandescence can be seen.

Fuego (Guatemala): After the paroxysm on 2 Sep, the lava flow effusion has stopped and the volcano has returned to its typical activity with occasional explosions from the summit vent. INSIVUMEH reported 6 moderate explosions yesterday with ash plumes rising up to 800 m and drifting for 10-12 km before dispersing.a.

Momotombo (Nicaragua): The intense swarm of shallow earthquakes under the volcano's SE flank seems to have more or less ended. If it was caused by an intrusion of magma, it has (as in most cases) not lead to an eruption although a second swarm could restart at any time.

Unfortunately, INETER has not reported on this activity so far.

Ubinas (Peru): New eruptions occurred at the volcano. It seems more and more likely that the phreatic explosions are a result of new magma rising from depth, and the volcano could be heading towards more sustained and possibly larger magmatic activity in the near future.

An explosion yesterday at 16:22 (local time) produced an impressive ash plume of 3 km height, followed by a smaller one at 17:48 with an ash plume of 500 m height. These have so far been the largest in the current phase of activity.

... [show less]

INGEMMET recommends preventive evacuation of the inhabitants of the village of Querapi, located just 4 km south of the summit and therefore particularly vulnerable to volcanic hazards, including ash fall and possible pyroclastic flows that are likely generated if the activity continues to increase.

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Since a few days ago, the New SE crater has been producing weak ash emissions occasionally. Whether this is the precursor to more vigorous activity and when this will occur, is difficult to say at the moment, but it is a sign that the volcano is waking up from the slumber it has been in during the past 4 months.

Gorely (Southern Kamchatka): No significant changes have occurred over the past weeks. KEVRT continues to record moderate seismic activity caused by degassing and internal fluid movements.

Kliuchevskoi (Kamchatka): The lava flow on the WSW upper flank continues to be active and can be seen on webcam images. Strong seismic activity reported by KVERT.

Kizimen (Kamchatka): The volcano continues to extrude a viscous lava flow from the summit vent, producing hot avalanches on the western and eastern flanks and strong degassing. KVERT reports moderate seismic activity.

Karymsky (Kamchatka): According to KVERT, weak ash explosions probably continue to occur from time to time. Seismic activity is moderate.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): KVERT reports no changes in activity, which is currently relatively low. Accompanied by moderate seismic activity, a viscous lava dome continues to grow and produces small incandescent rockfalls and occasional ash emissions such as on the attached webcam picture this morning. Glow can be seen at night.

From BBC report:

Scientists from the UK, US and North Korea have joined forces to monitor the volcano responsible for one of the largest eruptions in history. The volcano straddles the border between North Korea and China, and has been largely dormant since erupting a little over a thousand years ago. Despite being at the top of the list of big eruptions, Mount Paektu remains obscure and enigmatic. Details of the collaborative effort have been outlined in Science journal. The international group of geologists has begun working on the volcano following a spate of recent earthquake activity that could indicate it is waking from slumber... Around two thirds of the volcano lies in North Korea, with the remainder is in Chinese territory, and an estimated 30,000 tourists visit its Chinese flank each day, around twice the number visiting Mount Fuji in Japan. In 940 AD, the volcano exploded in a huge eruption, known as the "millennium eruption" that threw ash vast distances. Measurements of ash deposits from that eruption measured in Japan indicate that this was one of the two largest known volcanic eruptions on Earth since that period, matched only by the Tambora eruption in Indonesia, in 1815 AD. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-23981001

Volcanoes Today, 7 Sep 2013: Fuego, Reventador, Etna, El Hierro

Saturday Sep 07, 2013 13:03 PM |
Posted Image
Map of recent earthquakes under El Hierro (IGN)
Posted Image
Fuego yesterday morning (INSIVUMEH)

Ash emission yesterday from Reventador

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Last night, very deep-seated strombolian activity could be observed from both the Bocca Nuova and the New SE crater. This indicates that (similarly to early this year) magma has risen into the upper parts of the conduits beneath both vents. It might only be a question of time until this activity increases (perhaps even towards new paroxysms) and maybe becomes focused on one of the two craters.

El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain): (6 Sep) Earthquake activity remains elevated, although most quakes are extremely small and not felt. The area of the hypocenters is about 10 km below the central part of the island.

Fuego (Guatemala): The volcano observatory reports an increase in seismic and explosive activity occurred yesterday. There were frequent moderate to strong explosions, generating shock waves that could be heard and felt in up to 12 km distance.

Ash plumes rose up to 1 km from the summit and moved in westerly directions for about 10 km distances. Constant glowing avalanches were observed on the upper southern flank towards the Ceniza canyon.

Reventador (Ecuador): While the other notoriously active Ecuadorian volcano, Tungurahua, has been very calm recently, eruptive activity from Reventador has increased again. Ash emissions and explosions occur more frequently and have gained in strength again, following a phase of less intense activity.

At least one of the recent explosions generated a pyroclastic flow on 5 Sep on the south side of the volcano. The following time-lapse video shows explosive activity yesterday seen from the webcam, during a phase of (rare) relatively clear weather:

El Hierro is still twitching gently away. Whether this is just the island settling back down after the magma intrusion or magma still trying to get to the surface time will tell.

Mount Lokon in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, erupted again at 6:30 a.m. local time on Monday, spewing volcanic material from the Tompaluan Lokon crater up to 1,500 meters in the air. "The lava flow reached several northern area villages, namely Pineleng, Tanawangko and Tateli," said National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho in Jakarta on Monday, as quoted by Antara news agency. Sutopo said the explosion was heard as far away as Minahasa, which is 10 kilometers away from the volcano. Mt. Lokon has been erupting continuously for years, as such, for the local residents watching the volcano erupt is normal. Moreover, the volcanic materials have made the farming land in Tomohon fertile. The status of the volcanic activity remains at Siaga or "alert" (level 3), Sutopo explained. He said Mt. Lokon had erupted tens of times since the alert status was announced on July 24, 2011. "The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center [PVMBG] has warned local residents and visitors to stay outside and to not go within a 2.5-kilometer radius of the Tompaluan crater," said Sutopo. He added both BPBD Tomohon and North Sulawesi had developed and introduced contingency plans to mitigate the impacts of the eruption on local residents.

A fresh scar on the north side of Indonesia’s volcanic Paluweh Island is a harsh visual reminder of the unpredictability of volcanic eruptions. Since the current eruption of Paluweh (also known as Rokatenda or Palue) began in late 2012, debris and ash had mainly flowed south from the summit. On August 10, 2013, a small eruption deposited material to the north and killed five people.

A wide swath of gray and tan that narrows to the northwest shows the path of the deadly pyroclastic flow. (A pyroclastic flow is a fast-moving mix of extremely hot ash, gas, rocks, and volcanic debris.) As it descended from the 875–meter (2870–foot) summit of the volcano, the flow was funneled into existing stream channels. The flow entered the ocean along the northwest coastline, extending the beach by a few meters. In the aftermath, the government has stepped up efforts to evacuate Paluweh.

These natural-color satellite images collected by Landsat 8 show the effect of the eruption. The top image is from September 4, 2013, and the lower image is from August 3, shortly before the eruption. The summit was hidden by clouds on September 4, but visible on August 3. Also apparent on August 3 was a light coating of ash on vegetation on the northwest side of the island. Irregular gray patches in the deep green forests reveal villages along the shoreline and on the lower slopes of the volcano.

Residents living on the tiny island of Palue, in East Nusa Tenggara, will be moved to a nearby island over concern that the erupting Mount Rokatenda could become a larger threat, a disaster mitigation agency official said on Saturday.

“The island of Palue is no longer a safe place to live with the constant danger of the volcanic eruption threatening people’s lives,†Tini Thadeus, the head of the provincial disaster mitigation agency, said. “The island must be emptied immediately.â€

Mount Rokatenda began to erupt on August 7, killing five as hot lava flows poured down the side of the volcano and hot ash blanketed the island’s villages. Thousands have already been evacuated from villages on the mountain’s slopes to emergency shelters in nearby Sikka district.

More than 6,000 residents remain on the island in spite of the danger, arguing that local customs forbid them from abandoning their ancestral lands. The government has sent crews to the tiny island in an attempt to convince residents to permanently move to Pulau Besar, in Sikka.

“The central government has made a commitment to empty Palue island because there is a potential that Mount Rokatenda will keep on spewing ashes and hot lava,†Tini said.

The re-emergence of the long dormant undersea volcano on August 20 has compounded fears of a widespread disaster on Palue. The island, disaster officials said, is also in danger of a tsunami if Mount Hobalt erupts.

Under the proposed plan Palue would become a protected forest area and tourism site in the future, Tini said. The government will provide temporary shelter for the island’s residents on Pulau Besar with the hopes that they will permanently resettle.

Despite early efforts to relocated the island’s residents, many now suffer from respiratory problems from the heavy ash coating the island, prompting the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) lawmaker Saleh Husin to accuse the government of ignoring the needs of the displaced residents.

To date, the government has sent Rp 13 billion ($1.2 million) in aid to the island, Tini said.

KÄ«lauea volcano: current activity & news

Kalapana activity pauses; lava focus inland
Update Mon 09 Sep 03:25

A recent lava flow spat out by a spatter cone on Pu`u `O`o, showing lava there is still pressurized.

The more active northern flow-field steams after a wet night

For most of 2013, lava flows have been active on the coastal plain west of Kalapana and entering the ocean in two places near the National Park boundary, providing great opportunities for visitors to KÄ«lauea volcano.

However, in the past few weeks this activity has gradually diminished, with first one then the other ocean entry coming to a halt, and just within the last day all lava activity on the coastal plain of the volcano has come to a pause. In the past, these pauses have lasted from several days to several months, and occasionally signal a bigger change in the character of the volcano's eruption.

Also immediately important is a large lava flow-field developing north of Pu`u `O`o which has increased in activity over the past few weeks. On our overflight this morning, this area hosted at least a dozen of breakouts within the thickening flow-field, which apparently has diverted most or all of the flow from Kalapana.

At the summit, the overlook vent lava lake remains persistently high with no significant changes so far this year, with fantastic glow still visible for volcano visitors. As only time will tell when this balance will shift again, we will continue to watch and enjoy the changes of KÄ«lauea! A hui hou!

MODIS hot spot data (past 7 days) for Heard volcano (ModVolc, Univ. Hawaii)

Kliuchevskoi (Kamchatka): The effusion of a lava flow on the SW flank and strombolian activity at the summit vent continue. Avalanches are being formed from detaching lava blocks from the flow on the steep flow. KVERT reports moderate seismic activity with strong tremor, that obscure the signal from nearby Bezymianny volcano. A large thermal anomaly can be seen on satellite data.

No significant changes in activity was reported for any of the other currently active volcanoes in Kamchatka (growing lava domes at Shiveluch, Kizimen, Bezymianny, weak tremor and possibly still some lava effusion at Tolbachik, strombolian-vulcanian explosions at Karymski, hydrothermal tremor and degassing at Gorely).

Dukono (Halmahera): An elevated SO2 concentration visible on NOAA satellite data above the volcano suggests increased activity from the remote active volcano.

Lokon-Empung (North Sulawesi, Indonesia): More explosions have occurred today (at least 6 so far, at 06:12, 06:55, 07:45, 08:36, 09:51, 15:59), preceded by increased degassing and often followed by continuous ash venting lasting for up to 1-2 hours. Ash plumes rose to elevations of 1-2 km and the Aviation Color code was raised to orange.

Volcanologist David Pyle who is on location shared the attached picture on twitter and several of the explosions could be seen on the VSI webcam, as the following video shows:

... [read more]

Yasur (Tanna Island, Vanuatu): The volcano continues to produce very rhythmic and often intense strombolian explosions. Sometimes (see the following time-lapse video), bombs are ejected to the outer slope and land in or near the car-park area, where extreme caution should be applied. Geohazard maintains status level 2.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): The eruption continues at moderate levels, as evidenced by continuous seismic tremor and elevated surface temperatures in satellite views. Effusion and fountaining of lava from the active vent are likely ongoing as is low level ash emissions that are, at this time, restricted to an area within a few miles of the vent. (AVO daily update)

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity has been going on with little changes. The volcano has had about 1-2 weak emissions of steam, gas and small amounts of ash per hour during the past 24 hours.

A short time-lapse from this morning (CENAPRED webcam) shows this activity:

... [read more]

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala): The lava dome has been relatively calm, with only few and weak explosions and small avalanches from the viscous lava flows descending on the flanks of the Caliente dome.

Pacaya (Guatemala): INSIVUMEH reports continuing strombolian activity with explosions every 10 seconds, accompanied by a continuous volcanic tremor signal. Pyroclastic material is thrown to 100-150 m height.

Fuego (Guatemala): Activity has been mild during the past days, with occasional small strombolian-type explosions that eject incandescent material to about 100 m above the crater.

Heavy rains caused lahars (mud flows) into the valley of Las Lajas and El Jute, and possibly also into the Ceniza canyon. Blocks of up to 1-2 meters in diameter were reported to have been carried along in these flows.

Heard (Australia, Southern Indian Ocean): A strong hot spot remains visible at Dawson Peak on Heard island, suggesting that volcanic activity (perhaps in the form of a small lava lake in the crater) continues. No ash plumes or significant degassing plumes have otherwise been detected on satellite data.

Volcanoes Today, 12 Sep 2013: Lokon-Empung, Sakurajima, Suwanose-jima, Santa María / Santiaguito, Shiveluch, Arenal, Rabaul (Tavurvur), Ulawun

Thursday Sep 12, 2013 12:03 PM |

Explosion from Shiveluch volcano this morning (KVERT webcam)
Posted Image
Ash emission from Lokon volcano this morning (VSI webcam)

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): The volcano continues to slowly extrude a new lobe of viscous lava from the dome. This process is accompanied by occasional explosions and ash emissions such as one this morning that produced a plume rising to 19,000 ft (5.8 km) altitude.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): An explosion this morning produced an ash plume rising to 14,000 ft (4.2 km) altitude. This is the latest of the currently intense eruptive phase of ash emissions and frequent vulcanian explosions (at least 6 during yesterday).

...11 Sep:

JMA reported that 15 explosions from Sakura-jima's Showa Crater ejected tephra as far as 1,300 m during 2-6 September. Incandescence from the crater was visible some nights. An explosion at 1100 on 4 September generated an ash plume that rose 2.8 km and drifted S, causing ashfall in areas downwind including Arimuracho (4 km SSE). Tephra 4 cm in diameter was confirmed in an area 3 km S, and tephra 1 cm in diameter was reported 10 km SSE.

Based on information from JMA, the Tokyo VAAC reported that during 4-10 September explosions generated plumes that rose to altitudes of 2.4-4.3 km (8,000-14,000 ft) a.s.l., and most days drifted N, NE, E, S, and SW. On 6 and 8 September pilots observed ash plumes that rose to altitudes of 3-4.6 km (15,000 ft) a.s.l.; plumes drifted NE on 8 September.

... [read more]

Suwanose-jima (Ryukyu Islands): A new eruption was reported this morning producing an ash plume rising about 1 km above the Ontake crater to an altitude of 6,000 ft (1.8 km) and drifting NW.(VAAC Tokyo)

Rabaul (Tavurvur) (New Britain, Papua New Guinea): RVO reported that during 1-31 August low-level activity at Rabaul caldera's Tavurvur cone consisted of pale gray plumes with variable but mostly minor ash content. Intervals between emissions ranged from tens of seconds to hours.

Ash plumes rose as high as 1 km and drifted NW, causing ashfall mainly in a narrow band between the E part of old Rabaul town (3-5 km NW) and Namanula Hill, and further downwind towards Nonga area. Malaguna No. 1 and other parts of Rabaul town were also affected. Most noises were associated with forceful emissions and were short in duration. Seismicity was high and dominated by ash-emission events.

... [read more]

Manam (Papua New Guinea): RVO reported that after a small eruption from Manam's Southern Crater during 27-28 August, activity subsided. Diffuse gray-brown ash plumes, emitted at short intervals, rose from the crater during 29-30 August, and crater incandescence was noted. Seismicity declined and was at a low level by the end of the day on 31 August.

Ulawun (New Britain, Papua New Guinea): RVO reported that activity at Ulawun was low during 4-31 August; emissions from the summit crater consisted of white vapor until 16 August, and were gray during 17-31 August.

Emissions were more energetic on 24 August, rising 200 m. A single booming noise and weak incandescence was also reported that day. RSAM values fluctuated but decreased overall.

... [read more]

Lokon-Empung (North Sulawesi, Indonesia): Activity remains elevated. During yesterday, no significant explosions occurred, but the volcano erupted again several times with small explosions and ash emissions today, such as on the attached picture and time-lapse video:

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala): INSIVUMEH reported that at 1405 on 5 September a lahar descended Santa María's Nima I drainage on the S flank carrying mostly fine sediment and 50-cm-diameter blocks, but also a small percentage of blocks 1-2 m in diameter. During 5-10 September white plumes rose 200-500 m and drifted W, SW, E, and NE.

A few weak avalanches descended the S part of the active crater of the Santiaguito lava-dome complex. On 10 September another lahar traveled down the Nima I drainage, carrying blocks up to 3 m in diameter. The lahar was 15 m wide, 6 m deep, and had a sulfur odor.

... [read more]

Arenal (Costa Rica): OVSICORI-UNA reported that plumes composed mainly of water vapor rose from the NE and SE edges of Arenal's Crater C on 8 and 9 September. Tremors indicative of hydrothermal and magmatic activity were detected on 8 September.

The report noted that seismic and fumarolic activity had been very low in the past three years; however steam plumes associated with heavy rains had been frequent. (Smithsonian/USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report)

Peru declared a state of emergency Thursday in nine districts threatened by the Ubinas volcano, which has erupted seven times since September 1, spewing harmful gas and ash. Authorities are distributing masks and have given themselves a 60-day period to relocate villagers from areas where ash is damaging crops and polluting water sources. The explosions have sent a plume of smoke rising to 2500 meters above the crater, according to volcanologists at the Geophysical Institute of Peru. The first explosion on the night of September 1 was strong and followed by a series of lesser blasts, seismologist Victor Aguilar of the Geophysical Institute of the University of San Agustin de Arequipa told AFP. The volcano, in the Moquegua department 1250km south of Lima, is the most active in the country. Peru's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute said the eruption could have been caused by snow accumulating in the crater and preventing normal emissions. Since 1550, 25 eruptions have been recorded at Ubinas. There are 40 volcanoes in Moquegua and the neighboring regions of Arequipa and Tacna, most of them dormant.

Volcano Activity in Ecuador on Saturday, 14 September, 2013 at 12:33 (12:33 PM)

The volcano observatory reports a change in activity, which could herald a new eruptive phase in the near future. Starting from yesterday at approximately 17:00 (local time), increased steaming and gas emissions were visible, producing a column reaching about 1 km height. Incandescence in the crater area could be detected at night as well. Previously, activity had been consisting of weak steaming producing a column of less than 200 m height. Seismically, there has been a slight increase in the number of events related to rock fracturing and fluid movements within the volcano, but seismic activity still remains at a level considered moderate to low.

Kliuchevskoi (Kamchatka): Lava effusion continues. Since the night 10-11 Sep, the lava has changed path and now feeds a second lava flow a bit to the north from the previous one, making it better visible from the KVERT webcam located north of the volcano.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): A moderate explosion occurred yesterday at 07:03 (local time), producing an ash plume that rose about 2 km above the crater. The event was accompanied by small amplitude volcanic tremor, and a volcano-tectonic earthquakes of magnitude 2.6.

Other than that, the volcano has been fairly calm, with an average of 1-2 small emissions, mostly vapor and gas, per hour.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): The volcano has had a phase of increased degassing producing an important SO2 plume visible on satellite data. No reports of other unusual activity have become known.

Reventador (Ecuador): Activity, both internal and external, remains high, with occasional ash explosions and possibly lava effusion from the summit vent.

Tungurahua (Ecuador): The volcano observatory reports a change in activity, which could herald a new eruptive phase in the near future.

Thousands of residents living in 11 villages in Karo regency, North Sumatra, fled to traditional meeting halls or jambur and houses of worship after Mount Sinabung erupted early on Sunday. As of 1 p.m. local time, waves of people continued to flock to several jambur and houses of worship. Some were evacuated by local authorities in military and police trucks, while the remainder fled on their own initiative. Ipon Ginting along with his family of six, who live only about 1 kilometer from the volcano, left their home as they were worried about the possible impact of the eruption. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry’s head of volcanology and geological disaster mitigation, M.Hendrasto, said Mt. Sinabung’s status had been increased to alert (level 3) from caution (level 2) due to the increase in activity. “There is the potential that Sinabung will erupt again, so we are asking locals to remain alert,†Hendrasto said, adding that it could not be predicted when the volcano might erupt again. Karo Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Albert Sianipar said that as a precautionary measure, residents living around Mt. Sinabung were not allowed to return to their homes at this time. “Residents who live within a radius of 3 km from the volcano are not allowed to go home,†Albert said. He said around 1,500 people were staying in temporary shelters, including the Sempakata and Taras jambur, the Kabanjahe meeting hall, the Kabanjahe Mosque and the Kabanjahe Karo Batak Protestant Church. Mt. Sinabung last erupted in August 2010, which was its first in 410 years. Thousands of residents fled, while several people died from smoke inhalation.

update to above

Thousands of villagers fled Sunday after a volcano erupted on Indonesia's Sumatra island spewing rocks and red-hot ash onto surrounding villages, officials said. Mount Sinabung in Karo district, North Sumatra province, erupted violently before dawn. "More than 3,000 people have been evacuated from areas within a three-kilometre (two-mile) radius of the volcano, and they are all safe," Asren Nasution, the head of North Sumatra disaster agency. Five halls normally used for traditional cultural ceremonies had been converted into shelters for those displaced. Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, national disaster agency spokesman, said 3,710 people had so far been evacuated. Nugroho said it was second recent eruption of Sinabung. The volcano was dormant for nearly 100 years before erupting in August and September 2010, forcing about 12,000 people to flee. Indonesia has dozens of active volcanoes and straddles major tectonic fault lines known as the "Ring of Fire" between the Pacific and Indian oceans. Last month five people were killed and hundreds evacuated when a volcano on a tiny island in East Nusa Tenggara province erupted. The country's most active volcano, Mount Merapi in central Java, killed more than 350 people in a series of violent eruptions in 2010.

A small earthquake struck in Yellowstone National Park near the Old Faithful geyser on Sunday, but even the seismic shaking could not stop the trusty waterspout. The U.S. Geological Survey said that a 3.6 magnitude earthquake struck at Yellowstone, centered close to six miles away from the geyser Old Faithful. The quake was part of a series of more than 100 tremors in the park since last Tuesday. While Sunday’s was the strongest, a number of other earthquakes have been felt by Yellowstone visitors. “A total of 130 earthquakes of magnitude 0.6 to 3.6 have occurred in these three areas, however, most have occurred near the Lower Geyser Basin,†park officials noted. “Notably, much of the seismicity in Yellowstone occurs as swarms. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations continues to monitor Yellowstone earthquakes and will provide additional information if the earthquake swarm activity increases.†The park has been in the news a bit this summer. In June a norovirus outbreak infected at least 100 visitors, leading to allegations that visitors were not being properly warned of the outbreak. “Hundreds of signs in Yellowstone warn motorists to not harm wild animals, but not a single sign warning human beings of a huge outbreak of the norovirus is present,†park visitor Louis Greenwald told The Inquisitr. The Yellowstone earthquake did not seem too much an inconvenience to the park’s visitors. A live video feed the National Park Service has set up to show Old Faithful showed several hundred of onlookers watching it erupt later in the day.
