I was expecting a bigger eruption but not that soon!

Spectacular eruption happened just an hour ago! You can see the shockwaves and lava bombs on the side of the volcano!

Seismic signal from Pacaya today (PCG station, INSIVUMEH)

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): The eruption continues at low levels. Recent satellite images show very high elevated surface temperatures at the intracaldera cinder cone consistent with continued effusion of lava. No plumes have been observed in satellite images nor reported by pilots or local observers. (AVO)

Pavlov (Alaska Peninsula, USA): AVO reports no significant change in the seismicity at Pavlof in the past 24 hours: seismic tremor continues, but at lower amplitudes than previously.

For the first time since May 27, no elevated surface temperatures were detected in satellite images during the past 24 hours. No plumes were visible in satellite images, and web camera images show cloudy conditions. (AVO)

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity has been elevated. During 15-16 June, CENAPRED recorded 3-4 emissions per hous, including a few stronger explosions. One yesterday morning threw incandescent fragments on the north side at a distance no greater than 500 m.

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala): Activity has remained more or less stable. Occasional explosions occur from the lava dome producing small ash plumes of a few 100 m height. The viscous lava flows on the flanks of the dome are mostly stagnant, but sometime experience small advance and collapses, mostly the flow on the southern side (left in the picture).

Pacaya (Guatemala): Eruptive activity has resumed. Weak incandescence and explosions could be seen and heard during the past days. Today, no direct observations were reported, but volcanic tremor increased significantly during today, which could indicate some more vigorous activity soon.

Fuego (Guatemala): Activity has increased during the past days. A new small lava flow started on 14 June on the southern flank and had a length of 300 m this morning.

Explosive strombolian activity has picked up a bit as well. Glowing tephra is ejected to 75-125 m height, and ash plumes rise to 3-500 m above the crater.

Eruption from Popocatepétl this morning

Tolbachik (Kamchatka): (18 Jun) KVERT reports no changes in the ongoing eruption of the volcano. Tremor levels remain stable and lava continues to be effused from the southern fissure vent.

The other currently active volcanoes in Kamchatka have not shown significant variations either. Moderate seismic activity was reported by KVERT for Shiveluch, Kizimen (dome extrusion) and Gorely (degassing), while no data were available for Bezymianny (dome extrusion) and Karymsky (intermittent mild explosions) volcanoes. Klyuchevskoy seems to be currently quiet.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): A few hours ago, another moderately strong explosions occurred at 14:48 h local time, which threw incandescent fragments at distances of 100 m from the crater and generated an ash column reaching nearly 2 km in height, which was dispersed towards the northwest. The alert level remains unchanged at Yellow Phase 2.

Yesterday's strong eruption ejected bombs to distances of up to 2 km and many ignited bushfires. There were reports of ashfall in Tetela del Volcán, Ocuituco, Yecapixtla, Atlatlahucan, Cuautla, Tlayacapan, Yautepec, Jiutepec y Xochitepec in the state of Morelos, and also in Ecatzingo, Atlautla y Ozumba in the state of México.

Emission of ash and steam from Popocatépetl yesterday morning

Kizimen (Kamchatka): The lava dome remained active and produced hot avalanches on the western and eastern volcanic flanks. Moderate seismic activity and strong and moderate gas-steam activity accompany this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano. (KVERT)

Shiveluch (Kamchatka): Seismic activity has decreased, classified as weak by KVERT. This suggests the active dome is in a phase of relative calm.

Tolbachik (Kamchatka): No end of the eruption is in sight. Lava continues to be erupted from the southern fissure. KVERT reports no significant changes and tremor levels have remained stable over the past 2 weeks.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): The volcano is back to about 1-2 explosions of moderate size per day.

Manam (Papua New Guinea): Ash plumes at 8,000 ft (2.4 km) altitude and extending to the NW were observed on satellite images (VAAC Darwin).

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): Activity has continued over the past days with little changes. Direct observations are difficult, but for the first time, some incandescence from the central cone was observed on the webcams yesterday. This is likely due to the presence of a lava flow and/or spattering from a vent.

The latest update from the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO):

... [read more]

Pavlov (Alaska Peninsula, USA): The eruption continues at low levels. Seismic tremor and occasional explosions are being detected in seismic data and indicate that minor ash emission is likely occurring, although no ash plumes were detected on satellite data over the past day.

Elevated surface temperatures at the volcano have been observed in satellite data over the past 24 hours indicating lava at or near the surface. (AVO)

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): The volcano has remained at moderate levels with frequent but mostly smaller gas-steam-ash emissions at a rate of approx. 3 per hour. Plumes reached about 1 km above the crater.

According to a local press article, some US airlines (United, AA) decided to temporarily use alternative airports instead of Mexico's International Airport (AICM) as a precaution against encountering ash. AICM itself reports that so far no ash so far has been detected at/near the airport.

An active volcano in Anchorage, Alaska, that has been spewing ash and lava for the past six weeks reached new levels of intensity on Tuesday as reports indicate that the cinders were shot 5 miles into sky and landed in a nearby town. The eruptions from Pavlof Volcano, on the Alaskan Peninsula about 590 miles southwest of Anchorage, were its most powerful since it started showing seismic activity in mid-May, scientists at the federal-state Alaska Volcano Observatory said. The latest series of more-powerful ash-producing blasts from the crater of the 8,261-foot (2,518-meter) volcano started late on Monday and continued overnight into Tuesday, scientists said. The ash reportedly reached heights of 28,000 feet at times, disrupting several commercial flights. Anchorage-based PenAir canceled one flight and rerouted others, an official confirmed. In addition, debris has fallen over King Cove, a town of about 900 people located 30 miles southwest of Pavlof, scientists said. The National Weather Service issued an ash advisory for the region, warning of breathing problems for people with respiration difficulties.

Volcanic activity worldwide 28 Jun 2013: Etna, Reventador, Veniaminof, Pavlov, Ambrym, Galeras, Telica, Cumbal

Etna (Sicily, Italy): Except for a small swarm of earthquakes on 20 June, Etna continues to be calm.

Ambrym (Vanuatu): The lava lakes in Benbow and Ambrym craters have been very active during the recent weeks. A large SO2 plume is visible today on NOAA satellite data.

Pagan (Mariana Islands): The volcano continues to emit a strong steam and ash plume visible on satellite images. This activity has been typical of Pagan in the recent months, but no ash emissions could be detected.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): Volcanic tremor and small explosions continue to be detected in seismic data indicating that the eruption of lava and minor amounts of ash and steam continues.

Satellite images obtained over the past 24 hours show elevated surface temperatures at the intracaldera cone. Web camera images from Perryville show a small light-colored plume rising above the intracaldera cone to just above the rim of the caldera to about 8,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level and night time images showed a persistent incandescent glow at the cone. (AVO)

Pavlov (Alaska Peninsula, USA): Eruptive activity is continuing, but at a much lower level than earlier this week. The level of seismicity over the past 24 hours has continued to decline and now consists primarily of low level continuous tremor. Periods of continuous tremor are likely associated with lava fountaining and minor ash production, but at this level, emission rates are probably very low.

Satellite data over the past 24 hours has shown strong thermal signals at the summit. Pilot reports from last evening have indicated that plumes are rising to levels not much above the summit of the volcano. AVO has received no reports of ash fall on nearby communities today. (AVO)

Telica (Nicaragua): A new earthquake swarm started this morning, visible on INETER's seismograms.

San Cristobal (Nicaragua): Seismic activity has been at normal, low levels during the recent days.

Masaya (Nicaragua): Seismic activity remains low.

Galeras (Colombia): Weak ash emissions occurred on Wednesday (26 June). Seismic activity otherwise has remained at low levels.

Cumbal (Colombia): INGEOMINAS reports a decrease in seismic activity during the past week, but maintains "yellow" alert level for the volcano.

Reventador (Ecuador): Weak eruptive activity continues with occasional steam and ash emissions during small explosions that create plumes reaching about 1 km.

Volcanic activity worldwide 30 Jun 2013: Tungurahua

Sunday Jun 30, 2013 19:04 PM |

Tungurahua (Ecuador): IGPEN reports an increase of seismic activity over the past days which might herald a new phase of activity in the near future.

The number of earthquakes associated with fluid movement within the volcano has risen from 10 daily earthquakes on June 20 to 54 earthquakes on 29 June. These so-called long period (LP) earthquakes often reflect an increase in pressure inside the volcano. So far, the earthquakes are small and not felt by people.

... [show less]

In the afternoon of 29 June, mild fumarolic activity was observed in the crater area. Gas sensors installed near the volcano showed no increase in the concentration of SO2 gas, which suggests that the conduit is currently blocked by a plug, which supports the idea of increasing pressure inside the volcano.

Volcanic activity worldwide 29 Jun 2013: Fuego
Saturday Jun 29, 2013 19:04 PM |

Fuego (Guatemala): Explosions have become more violent, the latest special bulletin of INSIVUMEH indicates. Mild strombolian eruptions have turned into more powerful vulcanian-type explosions, which eject dense ash plumes rising to 800 m and produce numerous avalanches of blocks around the crater, especially on the southern flank.

Shock waves from the explosions could be felt in areas up to 15 km distance, and rattled windows and doors in houses of Panimaché, Panimaché II, Morelia, Santa Sofía, Sangre de Cristo and were sometimes heard as far as Yepocapa and Alotenango. Fine ash fall occurred in Panimaché, Morelia and Sangre de Cristo.

A phase of strong eruptive activity has started last night and is continuing with frequent explosions that eject incandescent bombs onto the upper outer slope and create a plume of gas and ash rising 3-4 km above the volcano to flight level 250 (25,000 ft).

During 2-3 June, the rate of emissions had climbed to 3-4 per hour, and volcanic earthquakes accompanied the rise of a new batch of magma. Strong tremor started last night, when activity became more vigorous.

There have been reports of a light ashfall in Amecameca Mexico State.

As of now, CENAPRED has not raised the alert level (but probably will do so soon), and keeps Yellow, Phase 2.

Volcanoes Today, 6 Jul 2013: Popocatépetl, Sakurajima, Iwo-Tori-shima

Saturday Jul 06, 2013 13:04 PM |

Infrared image (1) of the explosions at Popocatepétl yesterday (CENAPRED)

SO2 plume from Popocatépetl (NOAA)

Iwo-Tori-shima (Ryukyu Islands): A possible small eruption occurred this morning. Tokyo VAAC received a (pilot) report of an ash plume rising to 7,000 ft (2.1 km) and drifting 40 nautical miles to the north of the small island. No ash could be detected on satellite images, and sometimes weather clouds are mistaken for ash plumes.

On the other hand, the volcano has had relatively frequent small eruptions during the past centuries and new activity would not be a surprising event.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): For over a week, no significant explosions have occurred at the volcano. Is it going to "hold its breath" and save power for the upcoming 2013 IVACEI conference in Kagoshima 19-24 July?

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Another phase of near-continuous strong explosions has started a few hours ago after being calmer most of the past night.

Yesterday morning CENAPRED staff made an overflight over the volcano and took some infrared images which showed continuous emission of ash and incandescent fragments. The ash column reached just over 2 km height and incandescent bombs were observed at altitudes above 1 km and being deposited almost on all sides of the volcano at distances of up to 1.5 km.

...5 Jul:

After being a bit calmer during the first half of the day, compared to last night, a strong eruption occurred around 19:00 GMT (10:00 local time) and is probably continuing, judging from the seismic signal.

VAAC Washington alerted of an ash plume at approx. 25,000 ft (7.5 km) altitude. Due to cloudy conditions, it is difficult to observe the activity directly.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): The intensity of the current eruptive phase remains high. A phase of particularly strong tremor accompanying continuous explosions and ash emissions occurred this morning.

As a consequence of the elevated activity,CENAPRED raised the alert level to Yellow, Phase 3. An exclusion zone of 12 km radius around the volcano is in place.

... [read more]

Reventador (Ecuador): An increase in seismic activity has occurred today. A steam plume can be seen rising above the volcano and a hot spot at the summit continues to be visible on MODIS satellite data, suggesting continuing lava extrusion.

Copahue (Chile/Argentina): Weak sporadic ash emissions have been observed yesterday, mixing with the usual white degassing plume. In addition, a small SO2 plume from the volcano could be seen on satellite data. This could be the result of a new magma intrusion, or be a still result of the previous crisis about a month ago, when hundreds of people were evacuated but no eruption followed.

SERNAGEOMIN has not commented on new activity and maintains alert level yellow.

Steam and ash plume rising from Popocatepétl today

Tolbachik (Kamchatka): While the activity of lava effusion from the southern vent continues, the recent tremor measurements of KVERT have been showing a decreasing trend since mid June, after having been stable or even rising a bit since April. This means that the effusion rate is likely decreasing as well, but still, it is difficult to predict when the eruption will eventually end.

Chirpoi (Kurile Islands, Russia): A hot spot was again detected on MODIS satellite data, which suggests the presence of lava or hot gasses. However, visual satellite images showed no degassing plume, which would have confirmed possible activity at the volcano.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): A phase of strong activity started last Sunday. Following a week of almost no explosions, a series of relatively strong eruptions has started. On average, 4-5 explosions have occurred per day, with at least 5 stronger ones producing ash plumes to 10-12,000 ft (3-3.6 km) altitude.

Suwanose-jima (Ryukyu Islands): VAAC Tokyo reported a small ash plume from the volcano at 5,000 ft (1.5 km) elevation today. Likely, some stronger strombolian-type explosion has occurred at the volcano, whose activity is similar to Stromboli in Italy.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): A significant increase in seismic activity has occurred today, which could suggest that the eruption is gaining strength. During the past days, it continued at low but steady levels with no major changes.

AVO reported low-level volcanic tremor and a thermal anomaly as well as occasional observations of weak incandescence indicate continuing lava effusion. Explosive activity, if at all, is minor.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): The volcano has been a bit calmer today, but still emits an impressive steam plume with some ash most of the time as well as occasional smaller explosions. VAAC reported the plume height at 22,000 ft (7 km) altitude drifting SW.

Santa María / Santiaguito (Guatemala): Activity, currently low, has not changed significantly. There are occasional explosions of small to moderate size, that eject ash plumes up to 600 m above the crater. The lava flow on the south side of the Caliente lava dome also remained weakly active during the past days.

Pacaya (Guatemala): Mild strombolian activity persists at the volcano's crater. Some explosions can be heard in up to 5 km distance.

Fuego (Guatemala): Activity remains generally stable with infrequent wek to moderate explosions, sometimes accompanied by shock waves felt in nearby villages. Plumes of fine ash rose to 600-800 m height above the crater and drifted for about 10 km before being dispersed, INSIVUMEH reported this morning in its daily update.

Telica (Nicaragua): The seismic swarm continues with high frequency of small earthquakes.

Momotombo (Nicaragua): Seismic activity has decreased again during the past days with fewer earthquakes.

INGEOMINAS press release about the new monitoring station for San Diego

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): Strong activity continues. This morning, a relatively large vulcanian-type explosion produced a plume rising to 14,000 ft (4.3 km) altitude. The the volcano continued to emit ash for several hours following the explosion.

White Island (New Zealand): GeoNet issued a new bulletin about unusual seismic activity at White Island, but mentions that there is no current eruption:

"Over the past few weeks White Island has repeatedly produced very small volcanic earthquakes. These small tremor bursts are occurring like clockwork, approximately every 70 seconds, creating a unique pattern on our earthquake drum, with hundreds of these small bursts recorded every day.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity increased again a few hours ago. Strong tremor and near continuous emissions as well as bright glow from the summit can be seen on the current seismogram and on webcams.

San Diego (Colombia): (9 Jul) On 5 July 2013, Colombian scientists from INGEOMINAS have installed a first seismic monitoring station in order to find out whether San Diego volcano is potentially still active or not.

Current seismic recording at Telica (TELN station, INETER)

El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain): Small clusters of earthquakes continue to occur in two areas, at 10-20 km depth, one located beneath the central area of the island and the second under an area off the western tip. Overall, seismic activity has remained low and shows a decreasing trend over the past months.

Tolbachik (Kamchatka): Tremor and lava effusion from the southern vent of Tolbachik Dol have remained stable. KVERT reports no changes in activitly.

The same goes for the currently other 5 volcanoes on yellow/orange alert in Kamchatka: Shiveluch and Kizimen (moderate seismic activity) and probably Bezymianny (no seismic data due to Tolbachik) continue to effuse lava domes, Karymsky (no data for technical reasons) has likely some small intermittent strombolian-vulcanian explosions and Gorely continues to be loud with tremor caused by hydrothermal and degassing activity.

Chirpoi (Kurile Islands, Russia): A hot spot persists at the summit of the volcano, suggesting that some sort of activity is present.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): The volcano remains in a state of elevated activity with frequent ash explosions, although the intensity has decreased a bit compared to some days ago.

Lokon-Empung (North Sulawesi, Indonesia): No recent explosions were reported (which does not mean that there were none), but at least no significant ones have occurred recently.

At the moment. the volcano can be seen emitting a plume of steam and bluish gas (SO2), which suggests that fresh magma is present near the surface.

Veniaminof (Alaska Peninsula, USA): Activity has not changed much, AVO reported, and consists of lava effusion from the intra-caldera vent and minor explosive activity (if any).

However, there is a slowly increasing trend, judging from seismic data (continuous tremor and increasing thermal hot spot visible on MODIS data).

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity, both external and internal, has significantly calmed down during the pasts day. The volcano is now back to emit a steam/gas plume with more vigorous emissions and weak explosions of mainly steam and gas with minor amounts of ash at rates of 1-2 times an hour.

...12 Jul:

A large explosion took place at 03:10 local time on 12 July (08:10 UTC). Incandescent bombs were ejected to considerable distances and rolled down to distances of 4 km (!) from the crater and ignited small bush fires on the slopes, in particular on the eastern slope of the volcano.

Fuego (Guatemala): Explosive activity has been weak (only few and small strombolian explosions with ash plumes up to 200-400 m height and incandescent material rising 100 m), but another lava flow has started on the upper southern flank. On 12 July morning, it was about 150 m long towards the Taniluyá canyon.

Telica (Nicaragua): The earthquake swarm continues with decreasing frequency but increasing magnitudes (but still small ones) of quakes. INETER has no reports about it - apparently, this seismic activity is common at Telica and not a sign of a likely eruption.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): Starting from 11:43 local time on 11 July, a weak pulse of tremor accompanied by small ash emissions was reported by the Manizales observatory. The ash plumes rose to about 600 m.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): The volcano remains in a state of elevated activity. Ash emission and explosions have been occurring with no break when observed from nearby during the past night:

The volcano constantly emitted dilute to dense ash plumes in the form of both steady plumes or in single puffs. The ash emissions occured in long-lasting phases that were either completely silent or, more often, accompanied by weak to loud hissing and roaring sounds of degassing that swell and decrease in pulses, resembling the sound of airplane turbines. It appears that this activity corresponds to deep-seated strombolian activity. At night, faint glow could sometimes be seen at the crater during the emissions.

Kelimutu (Flores): The alert level of the volcano has been placed back to green (normal) by the Indonesian Volcanological Survey. The increased evaporation and the change of color of two of the three crater lakes, that had prompted the raise in alert status in June, have returned to normal levels or been reverted in July, suggesting that the crisis of the volcano is over.

Montitored parameters as seismic and degassing activity have decreased back to normal levels.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity has remained stable, with an average of about 2 emissions per hour of mostly low intensity. No larger explosions have occurred since the past update. Bright glow from the crater and a significant SO2 plume indicate that magma continues to rise within the volcano. Although activity is back to levels comparable to most of the previous months, the alert level remains at Yellow phase 3 (but might be soon lowered again to phase 2).

Turrialba (Costa Rica): A significant earthquake swarm has started late on 13 July at the volcano and is continuing. This could indicate a rise of magma in progress and eventually lead to new eruptions in the near future.

Tungurahua (Ecuador): A large explosive eruption occurred Sunday (14 July) morning, producing a large ash plume that could be seen from Quito (135 km away) and pyroclastic flows. According to Washington VAAC, the ash reached altitudes of 45,000 ft (13 km). The eruption followed a fast build-up of seismic activity, and likely corresponds to a vulcanian-type explosion, where pressure builds up to eject a solid plug that has tapped the vent. Elevated seismic activity had been noted in phases at the volcano during the previous weeks and while not completely unexpected as a potential scenario, the strength of the explosion was a surprise.

The threat and hazard of new pyroclastic flows prompted the government to evacuate people living nearest to the volcano.

Ecuadorian Tungurahua volcano today reported a slight increase in the energy of seismic activity, after the blast past Sunday, the Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School (IG) reported. The IG said that from about 04:10 local time on Tuesday, there is a tremor signal emission, which from 06:50 local time saturates the stations near the volcano of 5016 meters. Since the last time the intensity and length of the howlings have increased, said the IG, and explained that due to the presence of high clouds in the volcano area there have been no observations of the surface manifestations. The National Secretariat for Risk Management (SNGR) on Sunday decreed alert, of caution at the volcano area, with a possible increase in the activity of the colossus after the explosion of great intensity that day and the ejection of a high column of ash and rocks. The Tungurahua, located about 45 miles south of Quito, its current eruptive process began in 1999 and has since periods of intense activity interspersed with periods of relative calm. The population of areas near the volcano were affected on Sunday by falling rubble of black and pink color, while other remote areas received falling of thick black ash. Authorities Risk Management Secretariat volcano kept under constant observation to implement the measures in case of an increase in its activity.

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Scientists say lava flow and ash and gas emissions have intensified at a second Ecuadorean volcano, Reventador, as the full-bore eruption of the Tungurahua cone continues.

Ecuador's Geophysics Institute says the lava flow on Reventador's southern flank has increased since Saturday but poses no immediate threat to villagers in the region 60 miles (100) kilometers) east of the capital, Quito.

The 11,400-foot (3,475-meter) volcano is nearly three times that distance from Tungurahua to the southwest. It has been roaring since Sunday, when 200 people were evacuated from its flanks and one pyroclastic blast was heard as far away as the coastal city of Guayaquil.

Tungurahua is 16,480 feet (5,023 meters) high and has been active since 1999.

Reventador had its last big eruption in November 2002.
