Pavlov volcano (Alaska): probable new eruption

Tuesday May 14, 2013 00:03 AM | BY: T

A new eruption has probably started. AVO raised the alert level to orange, following an increase in seismic activity this morning along with the presence of an intense thermal anomaly at the summit observed in latest satellite imagery.

Similar patterns of seismicity and elevated surface temperatures have previously signalled the onset of eruptive activity at Pavlof. Although not yet visually confirmed, a low-level eruption of lava has likely begun from a summit vent. No ash clouds have been detected.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Scientists say small lava flows have been detected on two restless volcanoes in Alaska.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory says satellite images Tuesday show the lava partly down a flank of Pavlof Volcano in a low-level eruption 625 miles southwest of Anchorage.

Geophysicist Dave Schneider says minor steam and ash emissions are visible from the community of Cold Bay 37 miles away.

Pavlof is the second Alaska volcano to erupt this month.

Cleveland Volcano, on an uninhabited island in the Aleutian Islands, experienced a low-level eruption in early May. The observatory says analysis of satellite imagery shows a lava flow partly down a flank of the volcano.

Ash plumes can be an aviation hazard, but no ash clouds have been detected from Cleveland Volcano in the past week.

Seismic activity is continuing at the Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City and authorities say they have readied shelters and identified evacuation routes in case they should be needed. Mexico's National Disaster Prevention Center says there were two explosions at the white-capped volcano between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The center says the volcano spewed a plume of steam about a mile (1.5 kilometer) into the sky. Authorities continue to monitor the volcano's activity but have not ordered any evacuations. Rain has been forecast for the area, however, and authorities say towns nearby could be flooded with ash mud. Popocatepetl has put out small eruptions of ash almost daily since a round of activity began in 1994. The eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and increased even more this weekend.

Anchorage, Alaska: Alaska's Pavlof Volcano sent ash and steam skyward but not enough to raise the aviation threat for international air carriers.

A satellite at 12:40 am yesterday measured an ash cloud at 19,500 feet (5,945 meters), just below the 20,000-foot (6,000-meter) threshold considered to be a major threat to trans-continental aircraft.

At 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the Turrialba Volcano, located east of the province of Cartago, began to spew gas and ash from two crater openings, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported. By 8:30 a.m. a significant amount of volcanic material was released from the two openings of volcano, "which may indicate that these materials come from deep areas,†Ovsicori said. "It is uncertain what will happen. Volcanologists are heading to the site to evaluate the activity," the statement said. Experts said Tuesday's activity is “normal for an active volcano such as Turrialba,†but they recommended all nearby communities remain vigilant in coming hours. The released material fell into grasslands and communities in the canton of Turrialba and reached some three kilometers west of the crater. The trail of gases and ash can be seen from various locations in the provinces of Cartago, San Jose, Heredia and Limon. Public access to the volcano area was closed last year due to the activity. The Turrialba Volcano also emitted material in 2007, 2010 and 2012. The last eruptions of the volcano were in 1884.

Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano erupted yesterday morning, releasing an ash cloud that reached up to four kilometers in height, according to emergency authorities. The eruption began around 8:30am. According to volcanologist, Javier Pacheco, the volcano began to release water vapor at about 5am. Two hours later, there was a column of carbon dioxide gas long enough to reach the Central Valley. Finally, at about 8:30am, cameras captured the eruption of ash from the volcano. Residents from as far away as Vazquez de Coronado, Ipis de Goicoechea and Moravia reported the presence of ash on farmland, vehicles, lawns and property following the eruption. The ash could pose a serious hazard to more than 1,000 nearby dairy cows, as well as crops of carrots, broccoli, cabbage and potatoes. Farmers are hoping that the possibility of rain today could help wash the ash from the crops. Authorities asked those who live in the immediate vicinity of the volcano to evacuate to avoid the noxious gasses, but many refused, not wanting to leave behind their crops or dairy cows, whose loss could be worth millions of colones. The Turrialba Volcano, located in the province of Cartago, about 60 kilometers east of the capital San Jose, has been active for years, and eruptions of gas and ash have been frequent. The National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Response (CNE) said that an alert remains in place, and reminds the public that the national park is closed.

Copahue volcano (Chile): ash emissions, alert level raised to orange

Friday May 24, 2013 10:30 AM | BY: T

Ash plume from Copahue seen from space

SERNAGEOMIN has raised the alert level to orange. Since May 15, a progressive increase in seismic activity as well emissions of gas and now some ash have been observed.

Both earthquakes related to rock fracturing and fluid movements have picked up in numbers and possibly indicate a new magmatic intrusion on its way. This scenario is confirmed by the start of small ash emissions and glow at the crater which is visible at night. The plume of gas and ash could be seen from space by the MODIS sensor, streching about 100 km to the southeast.

Copahue volcano had already experienced a first increase of activity in December, and a second one in January. No eruption followed and alert was lowered to green in April before returning to yellow again soon after.

Chirinkotan volcano (Kurile Islands, Russia): steam plume observed suggests new eruption

Friday May 24, 2013 15:17 PM | BY: T
Posted Image
The plume of Chirinkotan volcano this morning (NASA/MODIS via Blog Culture Volcan)

The remote volcano in the northern Kuriles is probably in eruption, the latest SVERT report and satellite images suggest. A plume of gas and steam, and possibly some minor amounts ash was seen with the MODIS sensor onboard the NASA Terra satellite this morning.

Satellite data also indicate that activity had likely already started in early May, because a small thermal anomaly can be traced back on archive pictures to 7 May. One should take into account that frequent dense cloud cover often prevents such observations, so activity could have started earlier than that.

It is not known what kind of activity is occurring at the volcano. Possibilities include some minor explosive (strombolian ?) activity at the summit, or lava flows that might be reaching the sea and produce the steam plume observed.

The last eruption of the volcano was (probably) in 2004.

Kelimutu volcano (Flores, Indonesia): crater lake changes color, alert level raised

Wednesday Jun 05, 2013 17:35 PM | BY: T

VSI raised the alert level of the volcano on Flores, famous for its 3 differently colored crater lakes, from 1 to 2 ("normal" to "waspada", "watch") on a scaled of 1 to 4, after one of the 3 crater lakes turned from blue to white on 3 June. In addition, a strong smell of sulfur was noted by people from Pemo village a few kilometers south.

The main risk in case of an eruption would be phreatic explosions, ash falls, and the possibly catastrophic draining of the lake(s) potentially causing large lahars and floods threatening nearby communities near and inside the valleys radiating from the volcano.

Kerinci volcano (Sumatra, Indonesia): small eruption on 2 June

Wednesday Jun 05, 2013 17:26 PM | BY: T

An small eruption occurred last Sunday (2 June) at 8:43 am (local time), preceded by a rise in seismic activity reported by the local volcano observatory. An ash explosion produced a small rising 300-600 m and light ash fall at Gunung Tujuh about 20 km away. According to local news, the sudden eruption caused panik among inhabitants of Sungai Rumpun village and several evacuated their homes. Some climbers who were on the volcano at the time of the explosions returned unharmed.

The eruption was not signalled by VSI nor VAAC and originally only mentioned in some Indonesian media where it is not worth more than a brief note, given the large number of such events every year. Many more eruptions probably occur around the world without getting the attention of international media.

Satellite data showed a weak SO2 anomaly at the volcano on 2 June and a thermal anomaly is regularly visible at the often active volcano's summit.

Volcanic activity worldwide 7 Jun 2013: Etna, Pacaya, Fuego, Popocatépetl, Ibu, Pavlov, Sakurajima,...

Friday Jun 07, 2013 18:56 PM |
Posted Image
MODIS hot spot data (past 7 days) for Paluweh volcano (ModVolc, Univ. Hawaii)
Posted Image
Current webcam view of Popocatépetl

Etna (Sicily, Italy): During a visit to the summit craters today, we could observe a new hot fumarole in the western pit of the Bocca Nuova, increased bluish degassing from a vent in the saddle between the old and new SE crater and hear deep-seated explosions inside the NE crater.

Apart from this, Etna seems to continue its "sleep". Tremor levels have been low during the past weeks, and no eruptive activity has been observed from any of the summit craters since early May.

Sakurajima (Kyushu, Japan): During the past 5 days, no explosions have been recorded by Tokyo VAAC. It seems that the volcano is currently taking a rest and at very low levels of activity, with no or only very small explosions occurring.

Bagana (Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea): Eruptions continue at Bagana. Occasionally, ash plumes are detected on satellite data such as on 4 June when a plume at 8,000 ft (2.4 km) altitude extended 20 nautical miles to the west. (VAAC Darwin)

Ibu (Halmahera, Indonesia): The alert level of the volcano was raised to 3 ("Siaga", "alarm") on a scale of 1-4 by the Indonesian Volcanological Survey.

The remote volcano on Halmahera island is rarely visited, but reports from the ground suggest it has been in a state of near-permanent (mostly strombolian) activity for years.

Pavlov (Alaska Peninsula, USA): The renewed eruptive activity (since 4 June) continues at low to moderate levels, accompanied by increased seismic activity. AVO reported low lava fountaining, although webcam images of the plume are more consistent with classic strombolian-type activity. Yesterday morning, ash emissions rose to 14-18,000 ft (4.2-5.6 km) altitude and drifted about 45 km SW.

Satellite images show elevated surface temperatures at the summit, consistent with mild explosive and perhaps effusive activity.

Popocatépetl (Central Mexico): Activity has not changed much and remained comparably low, with about 3 weak to moderate emissions of steam and gas per hour. Occasionally, some of them contained small amounts of ash.

Yesterday, 4 volcanic-tectonic quakes of magnitudes between 2.1 and 2.7 occurred.

Pacaya (Guatemala): An emission of fine ash occurred this morning at 04:00 local time, but INSIVUMEH reports no other (e.g. strombolian) activity but degassing from the crater at the moment.

Fuego (Guatemala): The level of activity has been generally very weak recently. During yesterday-today, only two small strombolian explosions were counted.

Similarly, the Santiaguito lava dome has been rather calm as well.

Nevado del Ruiz (Colombia): Seismic unrest and elevated degassing (high SO2 output) continue, but no significant eruptive activity at the surface has been observed recently.

Copahue (Chile/Argentina): Seismic unrest continues, but the number and energy of quakes has been decreasing in recent days.

The Kamchatkan volcano Shiveluch has thrice emitted columns of hot volcanic ash and gas. The tallest plume reached nine kilometers above the sea level, the Kamchatkan branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences' Geophysical Service reported on Sunday. A code orange alert was issued for the volcano. "Volcano seismicity is excessive, with rocks tumbling down its slopes," the report said. In turn, the Kamchatkan territorial department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said Shiveluch did not jeopardize residential areas and there had been no ash-fall. Rescuers do not recommend visiting the erupting volcano, because ash may cause allergy in people and clog automobile systems. Shiveluch is the northernmost active volcano of Kamchatka; it is situated 45 kilometers away from the Klyuchi town in the Ust-Kamchatsk district with the population of about 5,000. It is also one of the largest volcanoes in Kamchatka. Activity of Shiveluch intensified in May 2009, and a crack of about 30 meters deep went through its dome.

Ash emissions from Pavlof continue. Seismic tremor and explosion signals accompany the activity. Persistent elevated surface temperatures consistent with lava effusion were observed over the past day in satellite images.

Satellite images from the last day show an ash plume extending 33 miles (53 km) southeast of the volcano. This direction is consistent with low-level (less than 20,000 ft asl) winds. Web camera images were cloudy.

Ibu volcano (Halmahera Island, Indonesia): lava dome overtopping crater rim poses risk of pyroclastic flows

As the Indonesian Volcanological Survey (VSI) specified in its latest bulletin, parts of the active lava dome of the volcano have recently (early June) grown higher than the northern crater rim, where it is cut by a valley extending to the northern feet of the stratovolcano. Therefore, potential continued growth of the dome poses the risk of rockfalls and pyroclastic flows reach the northern flanks, where a number of villages are located, namely Pasilulu and Talen.

In addition, VSI scientists have detected an increase of seismicity and degassing since early May. This includes volcanic tremor from growing lava dome and deeper earthquakes, possibly related to new magma rising, and the occurrence of notable sulfur smell.

Ibu's activity has been characterized by the slow building of a new lava dome inside the breached summit crater since 1999. While present growth rate is still slow, and no or little incandescence is observed at the moment, the new seismic activity could herald a phase of more vigorous activity in the near future. In that scenario, the occurrence of dangerous landslides and pyroclastic flows would be likely and the northern slopes of the volcano should be considered a high risk zone.

Veniaminof volcano (Alaska): alert level raised to orange

Thursday Jun 13, 2013 20:33 PM | BY: T

The Alaska Volcano Observatory raised the volcano alert level from Yellow to Orange. Elevated surface temperatures observed in satellite images this morning at 13:25 UTC (05:25 AKDT) indicate that an eruption at the intracaldera cone is likely underway.

Seismic tremor continues and is indicative of low-level effusive activity and small explosions. No ash plumes have been observed this morning although clouds have obscured web camera views of the summit. (AVO)

SO2 plume from Sakurajima volcano (NOAA)

After 10 days of almost no activity, the volcano has woken up violently with 3 powerful explosions last night (at 22:05 and 23:58 UTC, ash plumes to 10-13,000 ft) and this morning at 04:26. The eruption this morning appears to be one of the largest explosions for a long time, producing an ash plume rising to 16-20,000 ft (5-6 km) altitude. An SO2 plume is also visible on satellite data.

Tokyo VAAC issued a warning of an ash plume drifting SE at flight level 200 (20,000 ft altitude), s. graphic.
