The visible Montagnola webcam for Etna is out of action now and again ?

It looks like ash on the lens (or shield) obscuring the view when it's operational !

I so want Katla to give us a major eruption (>VEI4) but preferably after Tuesday morning as I am going on holiday!

VEI5/6 would be even nicer! Although I rekon it will just go quiet again.

Katla is at the smoking gun stage IMO either she grounds every plane in the Northern hemisphere in time for the school holidays, or she vanishes like a wrinkly Ninja. http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ph34r.gif

A nice swarm of earthquakes which at least appears to suggest some magma movements, nothing on cam to indicate anything happening right now on the surface ( http://www.floodwarn.co.uk/iceland_katla_volcano.htm )

Think i may go to bookies and place a bet on my flight being delayed due to volcanic ash for August just incase as at least i get something back if it happens. probably the best way to get insurance above your travel insurance policy. Plus they pay out quick. Think we will need to watch this one play out. Hekla had a wobble a few weeks back now Katla !! seems something is building steadily. A mountain out of a mole hill or a mega eruption ?

i think your analogy is incorrect, as guns smoke after they have fired. i'm going with- her stomach is rumbling, and she has released sulphuric gases therefore she has farted and we are waiting to see if she follows through! http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

harmonic tremor is still decreasing and the earthquakes are very shallow, i.e. most within a couple of hundred metres of the surface, so they could be further collapse of the glacier around the crater formed by the original activity. or maybe she's got a good old fart brewing!

You are right there Bobbydog  . Her stomach is rumbling, the fart VE3-5 probbably the most awaited fart in history. I know volcanoes are destructive and cost lots but I hope that flood and slight Ice slump on the glacier isn't all we are getting :nonono: Katla the name sounds so cool, it has to be good.

RUV image) above the Katla caldera (crater) was photographed this morning during a coast guard survey. The hole is 15 meter (50 ft) deep and as can be seen on the picture below the link, the sides are almost vertical. Some specialist explain the steep vertical walls steam or lava intrusion in glacier cracks.

but video says it all

Iceland Met Service are downplaying it big-time. Presumably they know more about it than we do.

i think maybe its because its a normal event in iceland. (having a 20 year old bridge washed away!!) there is definitely (note the correct spelling :p) some unusual activity at katla over the last few days, whether or not it is a prelude to a major eruption remains to be seen... i'm watching closely...

Has this link been posted already? Apologies if so.

Helicopter trip on 9th July around Katla and floods. Amazing views into the holes in the collapsed ice cover. Warning. Starts very noisy. Will wake the baby.

Thanks for the update. It's interesting that Mount Lokon is erupting from the side!

It's a frequent offender so I wouldn't expect a large eruption from it.

re Mount Lokon's click situation update

this may not be a small eruption plus it has another volcanoe only 2.2 km away

http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/

is it me or does there seem to be more activity at katla again???

hi john, i'm watching it closely, there is definitely some activity going on there, tremors have dropped off but not to background levels. there are still spikes and the odd small quake, so its not over yet. i'm off to bed now, so i hope to get up to see a major swarm occuring, just before the big bang!!

Latest report translated by google for Puyehue - Cord Caulle in chile. It's still carrying on albeit at a lower level.

Special Report No. 70 Volcanic Activity Volcanic Complex Puyehue - Cord Caulle

Monday, July 11, 2011

The National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) - Volcano Observatory of the Southern Andes (OVDAS) reports that the seismic activity Cord Caulle over the past 24 hours, was characterized by the following:

Registration of about 5 events / hour (HB, LP, VT) between 16:00 local time yesterday and 12:00 local time today. HB 6 events were located and VT, located along the cord Caulle, with depths between 1 -6 km. It highlights two (2) VT events: the first recorded at 21:26 local time yesterday, with a magnitude (ML) equal to 3.0 and located 5 km. southwest of the broadcast center to a depth of 6.7 km, the second, recorded at 06:40 local time today, with a magnitude (ML) equals 4, and located 1.2 km from broadcast center with a depth of 3 km (referred to in the Reaver 69).

There were no long-period events associated with explosive events.

There were no episodes of harmonic tremor of high intensity.

The continuous tremor showed a stable behavior in both amplitude and spectral characteristics. Overall for the period, the average shift was reduced, equal to 2 cm2, which is considered low.

Due to weather conditions around the Cordon Caulle was not possible to visualize the height of the column by the cameras installed around it.

According to information from the center VAAC (National Weather Service - Argentina), due to weather conditions and abundant cloudiness was not possible to identify the plume dispersion during the last hours, but the forecast throughout the day will be towards the Southeast, according to the direction of the winds.

Seismic activity indicates that, although he continued the exhaust and particulate matter, it has decreased significantly and the outpouring of lava apparently has ceased. Recorded seismic events indicate that even internal pressure conditions prevail. The chances of an explosive event still remain, due to possible obstruction of the duct by the lava emitted and / or changes in the dynamics of the eruption, although it is unlikely to reach the magnitude of the first eruptive phase.

Importantly, the current situation, volcanic hazards are reduced to fine ash falls and lahars generated by damming side channels, the occurrence of rain. The main channels that can be affected by lahars in the current situation are the northeast: Nilahue river, river Buttress; southeast: Gol Gol basin and channels Puyehue National Park.

The eruption process continues and may again have an increase in the activity. The volcanic alert level is red: minor eruption

SERNAGEOMIN - OVDAS online monitoring continues 24 hours, and report in a timely manner about any changes in the activity of the volcano
