People may be reading this blog already, but according to this blog Nabro has erupted the largest quantity of Sulphur Dioxide ever recorded by satellite.

Thanks for the update.I find that quite surprising, as apart from the first day or two, the eruption didn't seem to be that major. I wonder if this is going to have any climatological consequences, especially as the eruption is continuing.

It's probably not a vast quantity in relation to other eruptions that erupted large amounts of SO2 (El Chichon springs to mind), but they may not have been monitored via satellite.

I think you are right! It's just the way that the report is written which is a bit misleading.

Nevertheless, the volcano is constantly smoking http://www.sat24.com/en/et?ir=true

Thanks John, that's very informative!

I still can't believe that we don't have any photos etc. from the ground! :-(

There are some bits and bobs out regarding Nabro albeit most is satelite imagery due to the difficulty in getting people on the ground.

Nabro sat Pic... Infra-red enhanced

Even when volcano's are sleeping there's still dangers as this video shows http://blogs.agu.org/landslideblog/2011/06/28/video-of-the-week-debris-avalanche-on-mout-rainier/

Just heard that there may be a volcano in iceland about to erupt, just wondered if its true and would it be good news or bad for our chances of getting a cold winter, i dont have any knowledge at all in this field.

Helka looks pretty quiet http://www.simnet.is/jonfr500/earthquake/tremoren.htm

Also remember this volcano only shows seismic activity just before an eruption due to the volcano being aseismic. More details here http://www.tleonline.org/theleadingedge/201105/?pg=48#pg48

"Hekla never gives you much of a warning," Einarsson said, pointing out that in 2000, it began rumbling an hour and a half before the outbreak of magma, which "was actually an unusually long warning. In 1970 we only got 25 minutes notice."

Keeping a eye on the Pu'u O'o' cam in Hawaii currently. Looks like a drainage sequence is starting again, that will invariably end up as a fissure eruption on the lower flanks of the volcano as happened earlier on in the year.
