Must have been a really interesting trip. As most of the original Krakatoa was blasted away there may not have been much to see if conditions were not clear.

Yep

I was on a cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

The conditions were great although I do remember that there was a thunderstorm over the local Java coast.

We went through the Sumatra Straits and Krakatoa was identified for a  sail past  at about 16:00. It was the highlight of my trip as I have always read as much as I could about the explosion, I also seem to remember watching the film 'East of Java' on TV before I went.

I was out on deck, and I specifically looked for the old crater walls of Krakatoa, but from our sail-by position I saw no rocks surrounding Anna.  Maybe it was high tide or maybe they are around the other side - but I saw nothing.

My last memory of her was 2 hrs later when I looked from the stern and saw (about 30 miles away) Anna with just a puff of smoke billowing from the top. I distinctly remember wondering how long it would be before activity started to return.

A memory I will never forget. She looked just like a distant church steeple, even in those days the steepness of the cone was impressive. Now it looks as if most of the structure will have to be rebuilt again, although I have still not seen the final situation/position of the cone. As I suggested - if the active crater is now at sea level there could be a lot more activity to be seen from her.

Sorry to bore you, but it is worthwhile seeing the current structure. It just shows the force that must have removed the whole island. A similar feature can be seen in the Adriatic if you can visit Santorini, it still has some of the original walls surrounding the central core above sea level.

Not boring me. Just envious. Enjoyed my recent trip to Santorini, which I wanted to visit for years. Makes us humans look pretty puny.

Yes a great film down to a standard not the least being Krakatoa is west of Java. East was obviously more exotic.

Now that's another interesting Volcano.

As we get more and more reliant on technology we get the more vulnerable we are to a large Eruption.

New picture of the island here https://www.volcanodiscovery.com/krakatau/news/72694/Krakatoa-volcano-Sunda-Strait-Indonesia-fresh-aerial-image-showing-the-island-s-dramatic-change-in-s.html

The eruption is actually continuing as well with an ash cloud up to 4000ft reported.

Apparently more cracks have been found on Rakata bringing fears of another collapse and resulting tsunami.

For me this ship is a little bit to close. See the base surge the eruption causes.

Krakatau seems to have gone quiet for now. Although it has closed the crater off again the sea will probably erode the wall and the crater will once more be open to the sea.

Big eruption in Sumatra ( VEI3) yesterday ( Sinabung)

Column made the lower Strat but NASA's AIRS sat did not see enough SO2 to cause climate issues.

Seems to be ongoing with the island being evacuated. Looking at the pics possible pyroclastic flow as well???

One known death from the eruption.

Pretty active on the cam with a lava flow visible when the smoke clears https://www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/sicilia/messina/stromboli.html

Etna apparently is stirring again no doubt jealous of the attention given to Stromboli.

Mauna Loa in Hawaii is twitching and the alert raised to yellow as deformation and small earth quakes have recently risen above normal background levels.
