There have been 37 in that region in the last 24 hours the weakest being 4.7 and it doesnt look like they are stopping or weakening. Is this region volcanic because that amount of regular movement could suggest magma moving - i am only guessing.

Very volcanic region.

Active Volcanoes in Indonesia (Earthquake hit region) include Tandikat, Marapi, Kerinci, Sorik Marapi and Talang which erupted not long after the Boxing Day 2004 9.1 quake which generated the Tsunami.

26 Earthquakes of 5.0 or greater in the Samoa/Tonga region in the last 24 hrs. Which is pretty amazing and scary really.

To put it in perspective the (23rd to the 29th )week before the big Samoa earthquake saw 16 5.0 or greater earthquakes across the entire world.

The last 5.0 in that region was 30 mins or so ago.

A 6.3 off the coast of Peru. Old earth is certainly twitching at the moment.

Incase anybody is interested... there is a Firefox addon called eQuake Alert which will keep you updated on all earthquakes around the world as they happen . I have set mine to flash when any earthquakes occur that are stronger then a magnitude 6

Is the collective " a swarm of 'quakes' ?

At this rate it'll be Japan or California next..what with being in the Ring of Fire...

Im not sure wether its a seperate quake but the USGS just sent a Email alert with a 5.9 quake being recorded near the Mountains of Peru, estimates for this one was that its depth was 150 miles deep, shake-map doesnt show any significant risk of building damage though.

Major quakes can weaken seismic faults far away, scientists say

Huge earthquakes can weaken seismic faults on the other side of the world, scientists in California said on Wednesday.

Their study coincided with a major 8.0-magnitude quake in the Pacific, unleashing a tsunami that killed scores of people in the Samoan islands and Tonga

This does make sense. The Pacific earthquake was magnitude 8.3, which is huge and is amongst the largest ever recorded. The energy release during an earth quake travels right around the globe, so I can understand how the seismic waves can cause other unstable faults to fail.

As terrible as this episode is, we should all be thankful it happened where it did. Just imagine the effects if this had occurred off shore from Japan/Philipinnes or beneath California/Mexico, all of which are potentiall at risk from such a magnitude earthquake but with vastly greater population densities.

I think this also ties in with a documentary made a couple of years ago I think entitled Earthquake storm. This raised the possability of earthqaukes further along fault lines.

Seems quite a lot occuring in CA today, 5.1, 3.3, 3.0, 2.6, 2.8, 3.5, 2.8 all of which are shallow quakes. Wouldnt surprise me if the CA plate is moving south to compensate for the Eastward movement of the Pacific going under South America. This mechanism which is driving the plates is also responsible for why the Peru quake was 150 miles under in the Subduction zone, and why the Samoan/Indonesian quakes are at the other end yet shallower where the plate is tearing apart from the Australian.

At least 770 people are now known to have died in a powerful quake that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, the government says. Rescuers are working into the night in a race to find survivors in the rubble of hundreds of collapsed buildings. Almost 2,400 people have been injured, and the death toll is expected to rise further, officials say.

Very sad indeed sad.gif

There's also this too.

Press Packer Stephan lives in American Samoa. When he woke on Tuesday he thought it would be an ordinary day, but instead he witnessed a tsunami that destroyed parts of his island.

Here is his story:

No I don't think it is.

Another 6.3 magnitude for the Tonga region.

Coupled with at least 60 4.9-5.0 Magnitude quakes in the last few day's.

Very unstable area.
