According to the EMSC, it was mag 4.8 but far shallower, at only 1km. That could be damaging. Sorry for breaching the mag 6 limit mods, but... it's possibly "significant", especially given that here have been a number of other quakes in the area in the last couple of days. Hopefully not, though.

The site you are looking at has only just started to include information about the med. As a result it appears that a lot of activity is occuring. In the region around Greece, Turkey and Italy there is always back ground activity as shown

update SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. FOR THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO THE CONTINUING SEA LEVEL CHANGES AND RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake hit 35 km northeast of the Turkish city of Van on Sunday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The earthquake at 1041 GMT was 94.5 km deep, it said. Van is close to the Iranian border.

Last year, Israel offered to send aid to Turkey after a strong earthquake killed 41 villagers in the eastern part of the country, local officials said, as rescuers worked to free survivors trapped under the rubble.

The quake woke residents from their sleep when it struck at 4:32 AM local time, centred on the sparsely populated area of Basyurt in Elazig province. The quake had a magnitude of 6.0 and was followed by 30 minor aftershocks.

"There was a lot of fear and panic among the people. It lasted about a minute. We felt it very strongly and everyone tried to get out onto the street," Nursel Sengezer, a Dogan News Agency correspondent in Elazig, told broadcaster CNN Turk.

Turkey is criss-crossed with faultlines and frequently suffers earthquakes. A large earthquake measuring 7.4 killed some 18,000 people in August 1999.

Kinda makes sense though. Greece and Crete sit on the same plate as Turkey and so a large movement at that end could well trigger smaller movements at the other end and vice versa. Luckily there's been nothing large anywhere else
