Relatively quiet sunspot 1947 decided to give us a little departing gift before rotating onto the west limb. The active region produced an M3.6 solar flare.

Protons are sky high due to the X Flare yesterday...

It's sunspot 1944 that produced the CME Keith that is 7 times the size of Earth....

CME IMPACT: As predicted, a CME hit Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 9th. The impact was weaker than expected and failed to produce widespread geomagnetic storms. Nevertheless, some beautiful auroras have appeared around the Arctic Circle.

GROWING QUIET: Giant sunspot AR1944 has not unleashed a significant flare in more than 48 hours. The growing quiet, however, could be the calm between storms. AR1944 has an unstable 'beta-gamma-delta' magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class flares. http://www.spaceweather.com/

CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters estimate a 35% chance of X-classsolar flares on Jan. 12th, most likely from AR1944. The brooding sunspot has been quiet for days, but still poses a threat for strong eruptions. http://www.spaceweather.com/

FAST SOLAR WIND: Blowing with gusts as fast as 800 km/s (1.8 million mph), a stream of solar wind is buffeting Earth's magnetic field. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras on Jan. 13th. http://www.spaceweather.com/

I see sun activity is still low, and NOAA are forecasting it to remain low over the next few days. Maybe that will help our weather?

OLD SUNSPOT RETURNS, SOLAR ACTIVTITY INCREASES: Crackling with solar flares, a large sunspot is emerging over the sun's southeactive limb. It appears to be AR1944, returning after a two-week trip around the farside of the sun.http://www.spaceweather.com/

Sorry but where are we in the cycle now? I thought we are around solar max now with the sun due to go quiet again this/next year? Or has my memory got this totally wrong?! Thanks :)

Correct cycle max has been reached we are now on heading down expect to see less and less activity as the year progresses

Thanks, & the next cycle is the one to be predicted to be very quiet? (cycle 25)?

Yes cycle 25 is predicted to be very quiet but we should remember that this cycle compared to the last few is also very quiet so heading into a solar minimum not seen in our lifetimes very interesting times ahead

Yes, been looking forward to this for a fair few years! Will certainly be very interesting if after the sun has gone quiet we start getting proper cold winters again. Who knows? :)

INCOMING CME, CHANCE OF STORMS: Big sunspot AR1967 is crackling with solar flares and hurling CMEs into space. The biggest CME so far was propelled away from the sun on Jan. 30th by an M6-class explosion in the sunspot's magnetic canopy. It is expected to reach Earth on Feb. 2nd: http://www.spaceweather.com/

BIG SUNSPOT, HIGH SOLAR ACTIVITY: Solar activity reached high levels yesterday with seven M-class solar flares and three CMEs. Almost all of the explosions were produced by monster sunspot AR1967. http://www.spaceweather.com/

Almost perfectly centered on the Earth facing side of the Sun Active Region AR1967 is wider than the planet Jupiter, AR1967 has a 'delta-class' magnetic field that harbors energy for strong eruptions and so far this region has produced six M-class solar flares in February.

AR1968 just right above it is much smaller but has also been producing some M-class solar flares. There is a 50% forecast for an X-class solar flare over the next 24 hours. CREDIT; S.D.O

CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters estimate an 80% chance of M-flares and a 50% chance of X-flares on Feb. 4th. The source would be giant sunspot AR1967. http://www.spaceweather.com/
