Fresh snow in St Johns yesterday, nothing major about 5cm not as much as had thought it would be. Around 5cm forecast for tomorrow. Generally staying cold below freezing most days this week so good chance of a white christmas though looks like a milder day Thursday with rain forecase which wont help the snow though perhaps even more snow to come on the weekend, there was talk yesterday of a 30cm+ christmas eve storm but I've not seen it in the forecasts.

Winter walloping hampers truckers and travelers in Northern New Mexico — but state's ski resorts and Las Vegas hotel owners welcome snowfall

Monday's winter storm walloped New Mexico, shutting down portions of two interstates and many other roads throughout the state, closing schools, sending government workers home midday in Santa Fe, and filling up hotels from Santa Fe to Las Vegas, N.M.

Santa Fe Public Schools officials announced Monday evening that the city's schools were on a two-hour delay Tuesday morning. "District administrators will carefully monitor weather and road conditions throughout the night," said a statement on the SFPS website.

The storm left only a couple of inches of snow in Santa Fe by Monday evening, but it was expected to dump 3 to 5 inches around the city through the night. Drivers spent much of the day slipping and sliding around icy streets. Ice on Santa Fe roads prompted the city's Santa Fe Trails bus system to reroute some city buses and closed the route to Santa Fe Community College. Below-average temperatures are expected Tuesday and into Wednesday. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains were expected to gain more than a foot of snow from the storm.

Eleven dead, skiers stranded and travel halted as deadly snowstorm sweeps across Great Plains and disrupts Christmas plans

  • Six people die in fatal roads accidents as highways are shut in five states
  • Four people killed when vehicle collided with pickup truck in New Mexico
  • Prison guard and inmate killed when jail van crashed in eastern Colorado
  • Five people killed - including toddler - when light aircraft crashes in Texas
  • Hotels filling up as skiers heading to Colorado and New Mexico get stuck
  • Farmers say storm bringing good moisture to Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas
Whilst many Americans are dreaming of a white Christmas, they probably didn’t want it like this.

Fierce winds and snow that caused fatal road accidents and shut highways in five states are crawling deeper into the Great Plains today, with forecasters warning pre-holiday travel could be impossible there.

Hotels were filling up quickly along major roads from New Mexico to Kansas, and nearly 100 rescue calls came in from motorists in Texas as blizzard conditions forced closed part of a major route.

About 10 inches of snow had fallen in western Kansas before dawn on Tuesday, and several more inches were expected. ‘We're talking about whiteout conditions,’ meteorologist Marc Russell said.

We were forecast around 1-3cm yesterday afternoon and ended up getting 10cm in the space of about 3 hours, a nice surprise and shows how hard snowfall amounts are to predict? Even as the snow was falling the radio guy was still going with "2cm this afternoon from flurries", lol perhaps they should of looked out of the window! On top of the 5cm we had Sunday it's looking very christmasey thought a bit of a milder blip tomorrow (high of 6) with rain is going to get rid of some though I should think were pretty nailed on for a white christmas here now.

Snow falling faster as storm takes hold in metro Denver area

Snow is coming down in Denver tonight, and it's only going to get worse, according to the National Weather Service.

Icy and snowpacked roads were reported throughout the metro area by 9 p.m. Spin-outs were reported on Interstate 25 both north and south of downtown and Colfax Avenue and other downtown streets were beginning to get snowpacked.

The city of Boulder and Douglas were both on accident alert by 8 p.m. and Aurora followed shortly thereafter. By 9:45 p.m., most metro jurisdictions were on accident alert except for Denver.

Nighttime temperatures had tumbled below freezing in the city, following a high of 40 degrees today. National Weather Service spotters said the snow was falling at a rate of up to2 inches an hour in parts of the metro area. The really heavy snowfall won't begin to dump on Denver until about 11 p.m.,said Jim Kalina, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boulder.

"We should see a few flakes early, but it won't really get going until later on tonight, with a strong cold front," he said.

Lows in the teens are expected tonight. Temperatures in Denver Thursday won't climb above freezing, topping out at 20 degrees with a low after dark of minus-2, according to the latest forecast. The Front Range and nearby Eastern Plains come under a winter storm warning from 5 p.m. today until 11 a.m. tomorrow. The Pacific storm is expected to move out before noon Thursday, leaving behind up to a foot on Denver's southern and western suburbs, and 6 to 10 inches in town.

The city has wide-ranging forecast: 4 to 8 inches overnight, and 2 to 4 inches in the morning. To boot, wind gusts up to 20 mph east of Interstate 25 will cause hairy traveling conditions over the next day, officials are warning this afternoon.

Though state and municipal road crews have vowed to push back, but morning commuters should expect a slow go, officials said.

"People drive too fast for the conditions," said Wave Dreher, spokeswoman for the AAA Colorado motor club. "That's what we see is causing the most crashes. That and not being prepared." The mountains and parts of the northeastern plains are under a winter weather advisory until 11 a.m. tomorrow, with up to 3 to 7 inches of snow. Mountain snow began this afternoon and is expected to last through Thursday afternoon, withe he heaviest accumulations overnight, forecasters said.

Friday will be sunny, but the high is expected to be 29 degrees, with a low of 8..Forecasters expect temperatures to climb into the mid-30s on Saturday, then low 40s under sunny skies on Christmas Day.

Rain here today doing a good job of washing away the snow, though I think/hope some will still remain when it eases off in a few hours. Further snow is forecast tomorrow (5cm) so hopefully this rain wont ruin my white christmas, looks like being a chilly but dry christmas eve and day with daytime highs of minus 3 and minus 7 on the day itself and looks like potentially another 25-30cm storm arriving late boxing day (though I know these things seems to change). I just love this place! Think last year in the UK I seen about 10cm from one fall in December and that was it all winter, was reading up on snowiest cities in Canada and looks like I'm in a good place (if you like snow):

Looks like Sat through Monday could be interesting with potentially 2 snowmakers so after this rain moves through the colder air will be introduced. A very white and snowy christmas could be on the cards for you

Here its sunny and forecast to be that way for the enxt week, as is usual from mid december to early new year here - its quite often snowless. Just under freezing so some snow melt in the sun. Fingers crossed it hangs on

Yes it's been cold all week I think highs of below freezing since Sunday so a bit strange to see rain today, then back to tomorrow and into the weekend it gets cold again. I suppose the place is ideally situated to catch lots of preciptation, which will bring incursions of milder rain days like today especially in December...apparently the place didn't even see any snow until early January last winter.

Tomorrow I'm not sure what snow we will get, says close to 5cm from flurries so may end up with nothing more than a dusting or be like Tuesday they said 2-4cm and it was over 10cm. Keeping an eye on what happens to the current heavier stuff forecast for late boxing day, will either downgrade/disappear or firm up.

On pace for a record dry December here on the west coast. We have had less than ten per cent of the normal December rainfall (or liquid equivalent) so far, with small amounts predicted for the weekend. This week has been sunny but somewhat colder than normal for here, with overnight frosts.

Looking at the large-scale pattern, the heart of a western cold anomaly has been well south of the border around Utah and Colorado this month. Most of western Canada except for border regions of B.C. have been above normal, although less so in Manitoba and northern Ontario. Then it has been very mild in the eastern U.S. and southern Ontario, running about +2 C anomalies but as much as +10 yesterday (highs near 16 C in New York City and Boston).

I would imagine this pattern is going to be tough to shift now but there will probably be a trend to more variable conditions in January then back to mild in the west, while turning cold in the east, for February. This will all be dependent on a slight retrogression of current features followed by higher amplitudes then followed by a reset to west coast ridge, east coast trough by February. The above factors in the anticipated "SSW" event likely in early to mid January.

Such is the nature of forecasting snow in advance...the boxing day snow has gone but todays snow has been upgraded to 10-15cm...that would be nice for christmas and not too much to cleanup!

Well we got our white christmas, around 10cm max last night not as much as maybe anticipated we probably had more Tuesday when very little was forecast though that was gone by Thursday this at least looks like sticking around for a few days with below freezing temps on the cards till at least Wednesday. Not sure we will get anymore snow over the festive period but I suppose you never know.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Nice one! The weather really played ball here, had the 10cm on the 23/24th followed by a cold high pressure taking over highs of around minus 8 the last 2 days, freezing all the snow on the trees etc a typical picture postcard scene and making it nice and crisp under foot, had a few flurries on the 25th just to add to the christmaseyness. And didn't even feel that cold either due to the complete lack of wind which is rare here.

Looks like we have a milder couple of days on weds/thur though not much in the way of rain, and further snow forecast over the weekend.

An almighty northerly blast for parts of Canada and the USA. -28c uppers in Hudson Bay and eventually in Quebec by Tuesday morning. -10c uppers even reach Florida by Tuesday evening. -20c uppers widespread on Monday night/Tuesday across most of north and north-east usa and much of canada. In fact the ECM projects -30c uppers at a time on Tuesday evening in Quebec!

Widespread snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures for many... lake effect must be a large possibility with strong north and north-west winds accompanied by very cold air (-20c to -25c uppers at times for the great lakes).

Got any depths for this? It's been interesting watching the radar, just NW of Youngstown, PA looks to of had a fair bit.

I haven't any figures but I don't think they had great deal. I think Ice and high winds were more of a problem.
