Video and Images: New Years Day above the Frozen Smith Point Bridge

Yesterday’s record breaking low temps made for a wild scene near Smith Point with ice on the bay and sea smoke rising off the Ocean.

According to this evening's gfs the east coast storm is forming off the coast of Florida tomorrow and impacting NE Canada Friday with accompanying surge of the Bermuda high pressure that will influence the pattern downstream

Powerful Ocean Storm To Bring Heavy Snow And High Winds To The East Coast Beginning Tomorrow

Quote

A powerful ocean storm is about to put on a dazzling display of raw atmospheric power off the East Coast beginning tomorrow. This system will be much stronger than your typical nor’easter, and will look (and, for parts of eastern New England, feel) like a hurricane by Thursday morning. One of the many unusual aspects of this storm will be the wide-ranging scope of wintry weather. Significant snow and ice will fall from the beaches of Florida’s Gulf Coast to the rocky outcroppings of Northeastern Maine. Additionally, winds will be gusty out of the Northwest for the entire eastern half of the country as the system intensifies. For parts of Eastern New England, winds will approach hurricane force as the core of the storm moves by offshore on Thursday. Behind the storm, a blast of bitter cold air will bring subzero wind chills as far south as Georgia as we head into the weekend.

In addition to this update which focuses on impacts, be sure to check out Dr. Ryan Maue’s blog that uses some of the cool new tools we have at weathermodels.com to highlight some of the storm’s unusual features.

Interesting that this morning's ecm, after the passage of the major storm this week, with the help of the vortex and another trough to the south east, promotes once more a surging Bermuda ridge which is again a major player in the downstream evolution. Can only post the 24 hour charts

It is quite fascinating and I notice knocker was onto it from the beginning. In a warming world it is comforting to appreciate that the dynamics at play can still introduce us to good old-fashioned severe cold outbreaks with record lows. Encouraging for local weather observers in the temperate regions in the north and in the south!

Looking @ some frigid windchill temps in NYC by Friday this week, forecast suggests -32C, Boston looking like the snowfall hotspot, a great place to be when one of these piles in, managed to be there twice when these events happen, great experience.
