Lake Superior and Lake Huron nearly frozen, and even Lake Ontario, the least likely of all the Great Lakes to freeze, has substantial ice cover. Will people in Toronto soon be able to walk to Rochester?

Yep VERY cold indeed again across the USA on Tuesday, what a Winter they are having. As far south as Atlanta close to -10c, Chicago -27c with a -40c windchill, probably even colder for Minneapolis.

Given the freezing of the great lakes recently...

Report: Lake Ice Grows Safer To Venture Out On With Each Beer Consumed

MINNEAPOLIS—According to a report released Monday by researchers at the University of Minnesota, the layer of ice atop frozen lakes grows incrementally thicker and safer to venture out onto with each beer that an individual consumes. “While the surface ice covering a lake may pose a very real hazard of collapsing under the weight of a sober subject, we discovered that this same ice becomes progressively more sturdy with each 12-ounce can of beer that a subject puts back,†said lead researcher Robert Piper, noting that the ice sheets atop lakes, as well as large ponds and certain rivers, could be rendered virtually impervious to cracking beneath a fully grown man provided he has consumed four or more tallboys, regardless of temperature or weather conditions. “Our data clearly show that by collectively finishing a 24-pack of Keystone, Budweiser, or similar American-style lager, ice becomes so safe and stable that a whole group of buddies can walk out onto the lake as far as they want. In fact, you can go ahead and drive a fully loaded truck right on out there, no problem, as long as you and the boys drain a pony keg and the last of the Jack.†Piper went on to confirm that, even in the highly improbable event that someone who has drunk a sufficient number of beers does happen to fall through the ice, the consumption of such beverages simultaneously heats the frigid subsurface lake water to a temperature at which one can be fully immersed for minutes at a time without any risk of hypothermia.

Possibly but they won't want to, perhaps the other direction?

Lake Ontario froze shore to shore in Feb 1934 and there was extensive ice without that being achieved in Feb 1979. Remains to be seen whether this winter will max out in that select company or not, my guess is not quite this time. Have not seen this much ice on Lake Huron since the cold winters of the 1970s. The next three days will be brutally cold in most of eastern North America once the current weak low moves through tonight. There is some chance of all-time record lows being established (not just date records but all dates) in states west and south of Lake Michigan where the anomalies will be greatest. Will report any that I can verify.

The weather on the west coast here has been phenomenally dry, we are approaching an all-time record long dry spell for January of 17 days set in 1957 and whether that's broken or not, the month has been exceptionally dry and sunny, from Thursday to today not a cloud in the sky, very little radiation fog after a spell when we couldn't burn it off earlier in the week, and daytime highs 10-13 C, frosts at night. You can comfortably walk around without a jacket as there is no breeze at all either. Snow depths on the coastal mountains are very sparse, you can see that the snow line is around 700 metres but from there to 1500 metres snow is just a few inches deep at most, then it's a bit heavier in the alpine up around Whistler, but half normal packs at the very most. The ground is dry and you could golf if the courses are open, many of them are not because they seldom get any business in Dec, Jan around here.

The mild Pacific air masses have been streaming north into Yukon and Alaska which are running 10-15 C deg above normal (inland for Alaska) and some of the anomalous warmth is spreading into the western subarctic but the jet stream then drops south southeast across central portions of the prairies into the plains states and right down into the eastern Gulf of Mexico before rounding the turn in Florida and heading back up towards Newfoundland. If this pattern retrogrades slightly as predicted, the colder arctic air will begin to settle into the Yukon and NWT near the end of the coming week, and anomalies will drop below normal in BC and Alberta for several weeks. But it won't be a strong enough block to disturb the warm, dry winter going on across the southwestern U.S. which has recently seen temperatures 5-10 C above normal (27 the other day in Phoenix, AZ).

A close analogue for this North American pattern is 1976-77, which could mean a pattern reversal in mid to late February and much above normal temperatures appearing in eastern regions. However, my research model suggests when that signal hits, there will be greater retrograde index over Greenland which may suppress the warmth to the southeast U.S. and set off an active snow regime in the northeast U.S. instead. So far this winter the anomalous snow has been more in the Midwestern states.

If you're wondering where California's missing precipitation has been going, look northwards to the south and southeast coasts of Alaska. The remarkably persistent ridge of high pressure that has blocked rain from falling in California during January has shunted all the rain-bearing low pressure systems northward, bringing exceptionally warm and wet weather to coastal Alaska. Heavy rains, snows, and warm temperatures helped trigger a‪ series of huge avalanches that began on Friday, which blocked a 52-mile long section of the ‬Richardson Highway, the only road into Valdez, Alaska (population 4,000), located about 120 miles east of Anchorage. The avalanches, called some of the largest avalanches ever observed in the region, blocked the Lowe River in Keystone Canyon, creating a large backup of water behind the snow and ice dam. The water level is slowly dropping, but a Flash Flood Watch has been posted for the region in case the avalanche dam suddenly releases. The highway is expected to be cleared no earlier than February 2, according to the city of Valdez website. Extra marine ferries will be running during the blockage to provide supplies to Valdez.

Nome AK hit 51f yesterday, smashing the old record of 46f.  Ave Jan max is 11f, so 40f above normal which equates to a 84f (29c) max in London.

Now we all know it's been mild, but the day we see a 29c max in Jan will be the time to really panic, well for the few thousand left living on top the Cairngorms it will be...Posted Image
