Friday 12th update

Not quite as cold but still down to 7C and with the light breeze off the Forth that will feel cool. Rather cloudy and still feeling damp but no heavy thundery rain to contend with

Wednesday 10th update

Looking cold.

It does now look like the rain shouldn't be problem for Saturday night. Either, it won't reach up into Scotland and will stall over N.England, or if it does reach the Central Belt it will be during the day on Saturday. So if it is chucking it down on Saturday lunchtime, don't worry, it is going to clear off into the North Sea.

That leaves clear skies and dry conditions. However, you may have noticed that even with some daytime heat for Scotland this week, there has still be a nip in the air first thing in the morning after some cool nights. By the weekend, much cooler air will be moving down to Edinburgh from the north. If it is dry during Saturday then by night it will cool off to 6C. If it has rained in the day, then it could cool down to 2 or 3C and I'm afraid that is cold, officially.

The wind will be light but from the north so the stretch along the Firth of Forth back to Portobello, at the coolest time of night anyway, might require a hat and gloves. Good luck to all the walkers, the lure of a warm coffee or hot chocolate at the end will get you round.

Next up Edinburgh MOONWALK Saturday 13th June 2015

If you have been looking at various forecasts and seeing a risk of rain, don't be downhearted at this stage. There are bands of showers heading up from the south but they are not certain to be across Edinburgh and Leith on Saturday night. It does look like it will be a cool night. Scotland is in for some warmer daytime weather midweek 19 or 20C even but this fades for the weekend.

However, nothing should dampen the Mad Hatter's Tea Party theme for the 10th birthday event.

Currently the winds look light, temperatures will fall to 7C but with any dampness in the air that could feel more like 5C by 5am.

The sun will set at 10pm on Saturday night, we are coming up to the solstice and will rise on Sunday morning just before 4:30am

As for the chance of rain

This is the problem, heavy thundery rain moving up from southern Britain late Thursday into Friday and threatening Lothian at the weekend. There is low confidence about the exact areas of showery rain for Saturday night, so my advice is to check back on Wednesday 10th. It could all just clear off into the North Sea, fingers crossed.

What do I Wear and Need to Bring on the Night?

Advice If it's cold on the night:

  • Don't hide your bra if you can possibly help it!
  • You will get warm once you get walking so prepare for that before hand - you don't want to stop to take layers off!
  • Once you are at the start line do the following
  • Wear your decorated bra
  • Put your see-through Weather Protector over the top - seriously they are very very effective and so simple
  • Put your Bumbag around your waist over the top of the Weather Protector to keep it down and out of the way
  • Wrap your sweat top around your waist so it's there if you need it
  • Keep your hat on... and if really cold put the hood of the Weather Protector underneath your cap... or buy one of our bobble hats
  • Wear gloves
  •  Once you get going you can simply pull your Weather Protector out from under your Bumbag and through it up around your neck so it's like a cape behind you. That way you can get it on easily if you get cold
  • Trust us - this is the best way of looking good and keeping warm!

Keep an eye on the Edinburgh 7 day forecast here. Good luck to all the walkers and volunteers overnight.

LONDON

Saturday night 16th/17th May, this weekend starting at Clapham Common. Should now be on preparation rest days.

A night of power walking a Marathon (26.2 miles) or Half Marathon (13.1 plus 2 miles) around London,  everyone wearing a decorated bra with a theme of  ‘Saturday Night at the Movies" Walking with your midriff, arms and back on show is never going to be that cosy outside after dark in this country. However, mid May is still bringing some extra nippy nights.

Update Thurs 14th May Fine but cool

Still looking dry, hoorah!  As my friend, who is doing the Edinburgh Moonwalk in June, said yesterday " No-one wants soggy trainers or soggy anything else, thankyou". Temperatures do still look like dipping away under the clear skies, with the light winds so there will be a nip in the air around dawn. The sun rises at 05:06 on Sunday morning, although it won't feel any warmer immediately but the sunshine should rally sleepy walkers and soon enough the rays will be bring some warmth for the end section. Keep an eye on the forecast for Central London here but it does look settled. Remember your number and your weather protector plus wrap anyway. Is your bra finished?

Tues 14th update Cool but dry

It is a few days off still, at the end of a 5 day forecast, so do stay tuned this week. It does look chilly. Don't be fooled by Friday night which will have some warmth. Cooler air will be arriving from the north during Saturday ready for the Moonwalk night.  For midnight it could still be around 9C but the forecast shows London down to 6C in the city and adding on a light breeze it could feel closer to 4C, that's cold. The chill will be due to the clear skies, as any daytime light rain and clouds should be clearing away ready for a dry night with only light Westerly  winds. So that's a plus, not sure how you can thermal up your bra though?

There is lots of information on the WalkTheWalk website about what to wear generally. Could be worth stuffing a hat and gloves in your bumbag, would that fit?

You will be sent a Weather Protector and Space Blanket in case of rain and to keep warm at the end of walk.

From Moonwalk info: The Weather Protector is in the clear plastic bag and is fantastic for keeping the elements off whilst allowing you to wear that bra with pride. It does keep you very warm. Don't take it out of the bag until you need it!

The Space Blanket is the foil item and should be worn after you cross the finish line. It's also a great reflector and should be tied over your Bumbag as you walk. These are sent out in Final packs

Good luck to everyone involved this weekend, walkers, supporters and volunteers from Netweather. Have a good last few days preparation and a not too achey walk. Next update Thursday 14th May Jo
