Scrub all previous posts. We now have wisps floating past the window.A chance for a good bit to fall and settle if it gets heavy given the time of day and falling temperature.lets wait and see eh.bring it on.

Looks like the band will soon pass through this region according to the METO radar (4pm),and soon we will be in a clearer slot , hopefully that will drop the temp below 0c, so that when the second band hits it will fall as snow and not Rain/sleet

The essence of your post is correct - but what second band?

the problem with the radar is that it keeps showing holes where no holes exist coz in the next update there is plenty of light err hesitant to call it snow.

keep the faith, the ecm keep moving the low further north..there is always a slight glimmer of hope..we have been so let down in this winter, that its hard to see anything falling..the measily amounts we have had are a laughing joke no one finds funny..but this is the UK weather where the craziest things go on with the weather and i believe in the law of averages we are owed a good dumping...last time we had more than 3 inches was in 1982 0.o and the sarf accuse us of having more snow..and id bet across the west of the region it isnt really that much better..i mean 3-5 inches is pathetic..and i think soon very soon we are going to get a hammering, like i wont write tomorrow off, they cant even get the tracks right, what makes the meto think they have this right? they didnt get last thursday right and they are truly hopeless for western areas of the north west..if its going to snow, it rains if its going to be nice it will rain you get the idea we own the copyright and trademark on rain here :):):)

I think you'll find its the other way round the Radar is showing snow where there isnt any. the Radar is also no doubt operated by Southerners and are feeding it false data to wind us up :) .

Precip here looks more like very fine sleet atm. As for the Channel Low ive been looking at satallite imagery and loops for the NE atlantic and IMO it looks to me like the centre of it is more north to start with than it appears on all the charts.

Thats an image I edited after veiwing the loop and thats where the low appears to me.

Maybe it's not a band then :) but there's definatly some more precipitation coming in after a clearer slot. Have a look at the Met office radar site

I see what you mean, I think it's part of the same band but radar coverage is pretty patchy over in that area.

Well after giving up and throwing toys out of pram  its actually snowing here - and sticking. There is a slight covering on the grass and soil, and some of the trees look quite snowy too. Having to pinch myself but its snowing in Preston.

As far as I am aware - current situation:

(1) There is one band of ppn which initially fell as light snow/sleet/drizzle but gradually turned more to snow.

(2) It has reached most parts of the region.

(3) Temperatures/dew poits have dropped over the last couple of hours - the mechanics of which has helped the ppn fall as snow.

(4) As the day continues and darkness falls temps will continue to fall.

(5) The band should last into the early evening moving eastwards.

(6) Lowland levels can expect up to 1cm. Higher routes could see up to an inch min - depths increasing with altitude.

(7) It is not a 'significant' event - nothing like what other parts of the country have had - but it is better than nothing.

I'm not too sure could just turn out to be nothing, plus we also have some slightly milder air moving in behind it so it might turn to rain anyway.

umm only one problem for which areas are you talking about altitude 1in min and 1cm for lowland areas? do you mean to the east of the region since this is moving east? thought the wind direction was going to change to a more southerly? then push up some of the remaining snow through the region oh well

James, the temps here have remained constant since it started to snow here in rural out skirts of liverpool (about 12 miles away) ofc that was a quick heavy burst..and its remained about 0.7C since maybe just after 3PM. Not sure where this warm sector is? its set to drop below freezing here in a couple hours

Nice slight snow falling, not expecting anything from this really as i'm pretty sure the end of the front is at our coast now.

I'm only going off the GFS, it predicts 850's to rise to -3/-2 but 850's aren't the be all and end all though.

When refrerring to higher ground I mean places in the east of the region such as Oldham/RochdaleRossendale Valley and obviously the Pennines, Lake District fells and Westmoorland.

Note/ Light to moderate snowfall in my location now. Starting to stick which has given a very slight dusting. I do think this is probably the most 'intense' area of ppn.
