Been an interesting 12 hours here just 2 miles as the badger flies from the S coast of Cornwall.

We started with rain at 11pm yesterday evening when the temp was 4c, it was still raining at 4am with a temp of 0c, but by but 7am it had turned to wet snow with a temp of 2c.

As the snow increased in intensity the temp dropped off to 0c again by 9am and that’s where it remained until the snow petered out at 11am.

The ground was warm and very wet prior to the snow arriving, so I was very surprised to firstly see it stick and then build up to 4cm’s.

A real shock for the birds around here, many of whom were tempted into mating again in early Autumn…their chicks look most confused by it all.

Probably of most interest is the fact all this happened with 850 temps around 0 to -1c....scotching the theory that we always need values at least a couple of degrees lower to

    guarantee snow in the UK.

Interesting here too.  Wasn't particularly cold last night but light snow was falling before dawn.  Temp around 2°.  We had heavier settling snow for awhile then back to light sleet.  The last 30 mins have been large flakes albeit with a bit of rain mixed in yet the forecasts and the radar are all saying rain.  Currently 2.3 from a high of 2.6.  It gives me hope that the it can snow even if everything appears to be saying the opposite.

  2. Well, so much for a cold snap it was more like monsoon season around here yesterday.  We had a shower that developed yesterday afternoon and just didn't move, there's a video of the rivers of water that closed the roads in a village near me yesterday on the Wessex FM website.

  3. I was very nervous when I looked at the radar at 5am to see the snow was just to my right and looked like it was going to miss me.  Fortunately it is pepping up nicely in the Channel and it is snowing quite hard here now.  Hope everyone else gets some too.  Off for my first walk of no doubt many today.  Just waiting for the fields to go white so I can go sledging.  Fortunately there won't be any hidden frozen molehills like there were the last time, by god they hurt!

Lol the latest BBC forecast pointed out the amber warning in the SW... but it then showed the snow to the SW of the amber warning region.

    No wonder people get confused.

Warnings from the met office say one thing, the BBC say another, I know which one of the two I'd trust...

I bet the BBC forecasters must hate this set up with warnings issued by the MET and the forecast issued by METEO.  It just makes them look stupid when their graphics don't match.  I hope the Beeb are reviewing the accuracy of the new forecasts.

  5. Is anyone else noticing that the Met and the Beeb forecasts are widely different?  As a trader who relies on accurate forecasting I don't know who I should be trusting.  My instinct is the met but I have to say Meteo called the cold spell more accurately for my area.  Has anyone done any analysis/comparisons?
