I think it's very hard not to build up some kind of hope and expectation reading the MOD thread, especially when the most highly respected members we have were gunning for cold again (not blaming them)

Perhaps there's a lesson in there for me.

Just borrowing this post from the MOD thread to illustrate my point

Does this ever happened the other way round?

What never ceases to amaze me is the "ability" of the models to flip flop to such an extent over such relatively short periods. So, what is it? Are the models basically flawed or is it our interpretation that is an issue.

Case in point - the Finance Director reports to the Board that his department's forecasting models projected a £10m surplus in two weeks time and then on the next run this disappears. What about "lessons learned" etc?

  2. I would like to echo the comments from stewfox above. This is truly the best and most informative forums. It is especially enjoyable as we approach Winter. Every year at this time my own excitement builds and then the rollercoasters commence! What an experience to see the forum going into meltdown in the expectation of another repeat of 2010!

So, what are my expectations for this coming Winter? Well, being from Dublin, I can only repeat the sentiment expressed in that ad for a certain dark drink - "in the home of the black stuff they still dream of a white one"!

  3. Many thanks to you guys for what has to be one of the most informative and best presented forecasts I have ever seen on this site!

I would regard this as a sheer Masterclass in terms of data gathering and deduction - well done to all concerned, the amount of learning material that you have supplied to novices like myself is fantastic indeed.

Roll on the rest of our Winter!

  4. Thank you both RJS and BFTP for your insight and very informative forecast. For some of us it truly "opens the latch" on the door into Christmas and Winter itself!

Well done indeed - now for the hard bit............the waiting game, the rollercoaster rides, fingernails bitten to the quick, "ramp" signs being erected on forum replies.........all part of what makes this Netweather forum site so interesting.

Good luck and steady as she goes!

Incidentally, some serious cold pooling now appearing over NE Europe and Scandanavia.

  5. So what is the state of play now? Has there been the dreaded downgrade? or, are we still in line for a potent blast from the east?

Here's hoping Azumin - don't know if the East Coast of Ireland will get something like January 1982 but as the Guinness ad says..........in the home of the black stuff, they wish for a white one!

p.s., if Snowaddict or John Cox, January Snowstorm, Stormforce 10 have any views, please share............

  6. What about the East coast of Ireland and in particular, Dublin? I remember very well the fantastic snowfall here in January 1982 that practically paralysed the entire country. Does anyone know if this could be marginal or a full blown event? I have been following the evolution of this event closely over the past two weeks and cannot believe that we could possibly be about to experience such seasonal snowfall! Can anyone put my mind at rest please!
