  1. Is anyone actually interested in any other type of weather at this time of year? lol

SS I think you summed up why I can like rain/gales better than me.

Yeah I'm not a fan of anticyclonic gloom or dull drizzly Atlantic weather either, need the lows further south so more active changeable weather here.

Nothing wrong with people liking/not liking whatever weather they want (hope my comment's didn't imply otherwise) was just a little surprised not many take interest in other types than cold/snow, or possibly don't understand some others liking active low...

      Thundery wintry showers

Sometimes some areas of the forum become so dominated by desire for one type of weather that those who enjoy other types of weather are deterred from posting- a bit like with settled and warm anticyclonic type weather in summer. There's no doubt that cold/snow is the most popular passion in winter, but I'm sure there are more members interested in other types of weather than it sometimes appears!

  2. Surely no one can moan at the charts this morning (unless very warm weather aint your thing)..?

Yeah we could do with a bit of thunder if it ever happems

    4. Bottesford

      Bottesford

Nah hot sunshine for 2 months will do! Storms ok so long as they time in correctly - Saturday afternoon/evening is NOT the right time!

  3. Unlike many I don't feel too inspired by longer term ideas of a high to our west in the Atlantic. To me that sounds like a feed of N/NW winds and cool or average temps with virtually no chance of any convective weather or interesting weather. A bit like the ECM T+240 chart?

Agree TWS, just the sheer amount of cloud and heavy persistent rain with recent lows has made me yearn for high pressure of any description!

Mid Atlantic ridges will bring little difference to what we've had...too far West, then we just weather fronts falling around the top of it...only if its close will we stay dry (BUT COOL!!!!!!!!!!!)

  4. It has been estimated it would cost $30bn a year to completely solve world hunger.. sounds a lot? but its about as much as the world spends on military every 8 days. Also we bailed out Wall Street for more than 23 times that amount! Many other examples too. Makes you think... :|

If the pope didn't come out and make stupid statements about don't use condoms etc African hunger might not be such a problem, religion has got a lot answer for when it comes to a lot of the worlds problems.

  7. Well the temp here is already 9.4c at 10:50pm.. this very warm weather seems to be having a rather notable blip here today/tonight

You can get cool nights with very warm setups under anticyclones in the summer, not sure why that surprises you so much, once the high builds again just to our north later next week we could get cool nights again

    3. March Blizzard

Indeed, never neared my record July low with uppers of 15C before though lol.. min 6.1c

Yes March 2012 was great here mins around 0c and maxima near 21c.

      Somerset Squall

Yeah, rainfall still well below average here, and July is shaping up to be drier than average too, 7/7 months have been here. All these dull days give the impression it's been much wetter than it actually has.

    3. EaasmanG

      EaasmanG

It's Devon. It must be right.

    4. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

Yeah same thing with this July here too, we managed above average in June and Feb but overall a little below.

Lol what about it being Devon EassmanG?

  10. Why is it that as we're in a wet unsettled spell that a few seem to think Summer's over, and even that our climate has changed and that we will get the coldest May for 100 years, or colder than March, and stuff like that? sigh...

      Certain kind of fool

A). may won't even be close to record breaking.

b). Climate is very different from weather

c). The summer will be "mixed" - just as you'd expect as an island in the north atlantic.

d). Winter 2012/13 isn't over yet although PE, Shedhead, SP1986 would probably beg to differ

      Evening thunder

Many trees seem to have stepped forward a bit over the past week here, so most are showing green. I just don't want any frosts that are hard enough to cause damage to the lush spring growth and garden plants, I don't want frost-damaged tree leaves all summer! (not an expert on how cold it would have to be to do this though)

    3. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

Northerlies have have had their time IMO, cold northerlies with -5C uppers don't seem right May-onwards, especially when they are happening far more than virtually all winter! - They have just appeared as soon as I don't want them or find them that interesting anymore, a bit like those mild/warm high pressure set ups in Autumn/Winter..

    4. Snowy Easterly

      Snowy Easterly

agree stormmad i have crops that could die from this annoying cold, as always the northerlies come when we don't want them

Well the last few days the azores high delivered some wonderfully foggy mornings that didnt clear in some rural hilly areas all day

  13. Not sure i like the negative rep points.. i see someone got -3 just for complimenting/saying thank you.. and someone on the new model thread gets -9 just for saying their view based on the models :S

    2. Thundery wintry showers

      Thundery wintry showers

Aye- if we stick with the negative rep system it could get very interesting once March gets underway, we may well see snow-tinted posts suddenly start attracting large negative scores!

    3. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

I agree - If it was used sensibly/fairly it might be good, Just think it's a shame some people seem use it just because they don't like someone elses preference. Yes think it may be interesting to see come spring and summer.. I also agree with the +ve votes

    4. Thundery wintry showers

      Thundery wintry showers

We're looking into it- it would be good if we can get it working, as the full rep system does work well on many other sites (e.g. ModDB, Youtube) and it would be a shame to drop it. Like Paul B said it's the bias that is the problem.

      Evening thunder

I must say Summer of 95's example makes our climate look almost continental! parts of the USA seem appealing to me and so does much of central Europe and also Finland/Sweden esp. in winter!

      Evening thunder

I thought it looked like smoke, but there'd have to have been a pretty big fire in the middle of the channel or in France for that to work! Some very low cloud has moved in now though.

I know what you mean about the thundery look, there was even some altocumulus castellanus here this morning.

      Evening thunder

Well yeah except it looks to be in the mid-20s to start especially Wednesday, with thunderstorms. Then dropping to a pleasant low 20's. That was not the reason I am going to Holland just nice to experience a bit of the summer weather that's just across the water this week, as usual!

    3. karyo

      karyo

Holland is a bit warmer than us during the summer months. I often go there.

    4. Alex95

      Alex95

Average Summer temperatures are 19C in Newcastle, 23C in London, and 24C in the Netherlands. That's enough of an improvement for me! Also, severe thunderstorms are surprisingly common in the Low Countries, but especially Belgium.

  19. Sorry SE, the NE is now the storm capital of the UK, and the SW is the polar opposite :(

    3. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

Yeh it certainly has been notable, Spring here was probably 'ok' or decent' for spring, but no thunder this summer but today I a torrential downpour hit me dead on after i complained about nothing happening earlier, so at least I've seen 'thunderstorm like rain' this summer.

  22. Why do people/council workers etc always feel the need to strim nice long grass verges/banks full of wild flowers (that help bees etc) into a ugly brown cut-grass mess?! :(

      Certain kind of fool

Councils only do it because the public want it tidy! i'd gladly leave everything long and plant wildflowers on every bit of council land but the people simply won't have it. Hopefully attitudes will slowly change.

    3. Evening thunder

      Evening thunder

      Yep, absolutely!

hey ho I might send an email to the council suggesting why I think it would be better to not strim it. Yeah I expect they assume many want it strimmed, when talking to a few people they often agree with me so I suspect in reality more like its more 'natural' look than they think.

    4. Certain kind of fool

      Certain kind of fool

definitely do email!!! I use any ammunition i can get to try and change things. Normally the only feedback we receive are from the moaners who want it all slashed and burned and made to look like a cricket pitch. If enough people lobbied their local councillors there is a chance something might get done!

  24. So.. they've put the exams forward this year so we have less school time, esp, with the royal wedding etc, need better and better grades to get the same type of job, my school expects us to have made uni choices by Oct at the latest, despite the fact we don't know if we'll know all their tuition fee rates by then!, also the tuition fees going up.. when will they stop making everything worse for us students!?
