  1. I think I'm about to see my first snow here since around 9 am. Instead of fizzling after it made landfall as most of the rest have done, this shower has pepped up and I'm now watching the heavy cloud, tinted orangey/pink, out of the north-facing window of the room I'm in.
  2. Yes, we had a lot early this morning,. but little since. My dad came indoors a while ago and said that we'd had some more, but it is hit and miss.
  3. Just watched it. Impressed that Neil quoted the AO and NAO and seemed to know what they meant, also referred to 1998 being abnormally warm due to strong El Nino. I don't think that the Met O long-range stuff is that bad, it's the way that they then present them to the media. As far as this winter goes, I recall people here saying that winter wouldn't get going until February - I don't understand the technical stuff fully, but it seems that the southerly shift to the jet and the strength of blocking is unusual, particularly given an El Nino event (albet weak as I understand it).
  4. They're OK in more normal, less extreme weather seups, but their performance so far this winter has been poor to say the least. I too saw the rain that was mentioned and raised an eyebrow.
  5. Have yu tried the spikes yet? I'd be interested to hear which ones you got and what you think of them as a reference, if you don't mind.
  6. I'm a wheelchair user and my parents will agree wholeheartedly I'm sure. I do sometimes get fed up hearing able-bodied people saying they can't cope in the snow - my mum got me to school, college and Uni in snow for years. As for pushing weheelchairs in snow and getting a disabled child out of the car, your salt approach is a very good one. Perhaps because of my situation, I'm very aware of (and interested in) the subject of winter footwear. What sort of footwear do you opt for in this weather? I'm afraid I'm one of those men who shakes my head when I see trendy young things teetering through the snow in heels.
  7. Thanks for your great explanations of straightforward things for idiots like me, John, and for being a voice of sense in the heated model discussions.
  8. According to my mum it's thawing a bit out there now. Still no ppn, though it's getting pretty gloomy.
  9. I haven't been into Norwich since the snow started. I'd think the main streets will be OK, but some others may be slippy. My question would be what sort of shoes or boots are you intending to wear? You can do a lot to prevent yourself from falling by wearing the right boots.
  10. I haven't read the latest posts in here, but I thought I'd let you know that we had another inch overnight here.
  11. I was out in it for over an hour yesterday and almost that long today - I'm in a wheelchair and I feel the cold, but, with being well wrapped-up, I found it very pleasant indeed, especially today with drier air and only my fingers felt coldish when I came indoors again. This is indeed the sort of cold we so rarely get in this country - a true polar continental or polar dry cold. The last time I remember it like this was early in the decade with perhaps an inch more snow than now (perhaps one of our statistical experts might know which year that was), and, before that, 1995 which I remember well. Cherish your memories of this, mes amis.
  12. A couple of shots of my back garden taken earlier (these and others are also posted in the Photos thread). Note cat LOL!
  13. A few of our road plus back garden and front garden with trailer lid to show overall depth. Taken earlier today.
  14. The eastern band of showers is fizzling shortly after making landfall, but the western streamer looks to be packing a fair punch!
