  1. Cheers.. we have no lamp posts where I live and was considering one of these. Will go ahead and get one now!
  2. A great day! I was up at 4 this morning to see the snow arrive here in Spetisbury, Dorset.. amazing watching the temperature drop so much immediately before. The heavy / moderate snow stopped around 2PM giving a good ~12 cm's on the ground.. about on a par with the best snow day from Dec 2010 (which was a long time coming). Great to see many coastal areas getting in on the action as well. This event was expertly forecasted.. the potential at 5 days and the NAE model and forecasters from 48 hours (Ian's MO input greatly appreciated). Musn't forget the longer range experts and stratosphere observers who successfully predicted a colder period around now at 1-2 months. Looking forward to seeing what the next few days and rest of winter brings!
  3. Had some sleet at first but it turned to snow as the intensity increased.. it's been snowing moderately for the last 45 mins and settling nicely. Getting dark now and unfortunately we have no lamp posts!
  4. A bit of a sleety snow mix in Ferndown, Dorset tonight.. with enough snow in the heavier bursts to give a decent dusting here! Interesting that Hurn has reported rain for most of the evening and that's at a similar low altitude just 2 miles away (towards the coast admittedly).
  5. Yes I certainly know it's here! However, I would classify what we've had / having as "severe weather in the next few hours".. with 100% confidence.
  6. Not sure why the met office have removed Dorset from the weather warnings... we're in the midst of a blizzard and the snow depth is continuing to increase!
  7. Rain overnight but heavy snow here for the last 1.5 hours.. about an inch deep on all surfaces now.
  8. Heavy sleet / snow for 1-2 hours (and a temporary covering on all surfaces) has now turned to rain here.. just a couple of miles from the south coast.
  9. I spent the afternoon sledging / snow boarding on the hills near shaftesbury... where snow depths are typically around 15 cm's with 2ft drifts. Snow showers came and went throughout the afternoon before an almighty snow fest swamped the area.. giving us doubts as to whether we'd get back home! Lucky we got away when we did as the roads were quickly turning trecherous north of Blandford. I'd describe the precipitation as a mixture of very heavy wet snow / sleet in Poole but it's still doing a good job of settling. Looking at the radar, some inland places in East Dorset / West Hampshire must really be taking a battering this evening!
  10. Since starting up around 2PM, the snow now finally appears to be easing off here in Poole. Watching the radar this afternoon made fantastic viewing as the near stationary snow band rotated over the top of us! Totals for today are around 2 inches early this morning and a further 3-4 this evening.. about the best day snowfall wise I think I can recall for this area (well as far back as about Feb 91 I expect). The main precipitation blob is still rotating but appears to be edging gradually WNW. As for tomorrow, the hills north of Blandford are where I'd like to go... but the office is probably where I'll end up
