  1. Why do TV forecasters call a small bump in the isobars in a low pressure system a "ridge of high pressure"? Such a bug bear as its not true at all(pressure does not significantly rise for one), a true ridge of high pressure is one that may topple after a Northerly and then the high topples quickly and replaced by low pressure.

I think TV forecasts are getting way more shoddy than they used to be.

I agree although there is still some decent forecasters worrh listening too like Nick Miller and Chris Fawkes.

They're a dying breed. Phil Avery and Peter Gibbs were some of the best but they're gone now too.

  2. Northerlies stretching all the way from the Arctic... Except the Northerly flow is originating from the Norweigian Sea. Not exactly the Arctic!

agreed! - hence why day time maxes over the weekend will generally get above 3C - you really can't beat a dam good easterly straight from the urals!

yeah, a prolonged easterly with sub -10 850hpa would be nice.

  3. Why are the BBC showing a huge mass of yellow behind the front, you would think there is large amount of mild air behind the front but this is not the case at all.

I just find it a strange and a bit of a misleading as no doubt joe public will think "look at all that mild air and hope it heads this way"

This is the first cold spell there has been this winter in Aberdeen. Until Christmas Day it had scarcely got below freezing. Still waiting for the first lying snow since Nov 2013.

Apart from sleety/wet snow, I had nothing wintry of note but point i'm making is we have had quite chilly air heading into Northern parts at times during December but because more Southern areas are now in cold air, they are classing it as the first cold of the winter...

  5. My goodness, how terrible is 606 with that female presenter, asks unrelated questions and cutting people off whilst they are on the line!

La Liga gets touted as an awesome spectacle, but competition-wise it's the dullest major top flight in Europe!
