That line west of Cherbourg looks pretty encouraging on radar for Sussex and eastwards, I'd say.

I have a feeling that lot is going to push more north/northeast but I could be wrong

Edit, that first statement was poorly worded, obviously that lot is going to travel in a north-easterly direction, but I think it will affect areas further west than what you mentioned in you post.

The sferics are lost in this wet mess...

Too wet for shooting other than setting up in the shelter of the car boot perhaps...

Sheltering in the boot of the car is probably the best bet unless more durable shelter can be found, I stopped by the over cliff carpark in Highcliffe and it was quite windy, which makes me think that sheltering in the car will not give good results from a photography point of view

there's also a chance to catch the partial lunar eclipse but is not going to be easy, I believe last Mays storms also coincided with a lunar eclipse, could be a good sign

Good luck if you do head out!

I saw some very infrequent distant flashes of lightning to my south or southeast about an hour or so ago and i am in West Wales.

Was quite surprised as I didn't think anything was expected.

I think it's fair to say that nothing will come of this lot, I wouldn't rule out the odd rumble of thunder but I think it's going to decrease in intensity as it pushes east, which is probably a good thing as the next week or so is looking quite wet, not great for areas that have suffered with flooding.

  4. I'm hearing some nice loud crackles on the radio, nothing showing on lightning maps though, I wonder witch cells are responsible?

The heavier stuff out in the channel is still going strong but nothing electrical appears to be coming out of it. If it continues on its current course it's going to hit somewhere between Bournemouth and the Isle of wight. But it's all very uninspiring and I'm not expecting anything exciting but I love to be proven wrong

    Look in the channel👍

Yes, I'm wondering if my wish of storms lasting until later in the evening will materialize, or will they die off before they even get near us, judging by the the current radar, we might have a decent shot of lightning, and maybe not too far from sunset!

I'll be keeping a very close eye on the radar, and camera at the ready just in case!

    Convective Outlook ⚡

An unstable setup is likely to develop across England throughout today with intense showers developing. Thunderstorms are expected to develop across Southern England bringing some lightning, hail, gusty winds & intense rainfall rates.

I couldn't be placed any better going off the map you posted, obviously things won't pan out exactly as shown but nice to see regardless

What are your thoughts on timings? It looks like the majority of the activity will be this afternoon which is the worst time as I'm at work until 4pm, I was hoping there might be something later on this evening, I get the feeling things will be dying down by then.

06z AROME nicely shows instability (CAPE shown by pink contours) and the threat of thunderstorms arrive from the south through tomorrow afternoon. My go to model for any thunderstorm risk now.

Nice to see there's something showing on the models, just checked the Google weather app which shows storms for tomorrow afternoon/everything

Friday 27th May 2017 a large storm rapidly formed over Devon and Cornwall. Wilcot camera detected a record 23 sprites in a single night

May 2017 great example of quite a few caught on monitoring cams and some in 2020 as well.

    Great find!

So it appears that there has already been a UK capture of sprites, and they appear to be reasonably bright which is a surprise for me as I've always thought they were very faint, when in fact they look to be almost visible to the naked eye.

A new weather phenomenon has been added to the list of things to photograph, it could be a long wait 📸😅

The UK is such a hard place to get sprites. You have no idea how big they are in reality. The reason they look small in camera is that generally people have to take them 100s of miles away from the store. It's actually quite hard to find a place to do that because it's so crowded.

It might be worth trying to get a picture of sprites over over Northern France, how far are away do you think someone would need to be, and what kind of equipment would be needed?

I can't imagine any standard Digital camera could capture sprites apart from some Sony bodies along with a good prime lens, the images on sony cameras are usually very clean even when cranking the iso all the way up

Too costly for me to switch now but I probably would go Sony if I was just getting into photography

Have just been reading about this and is very interesting. It explains that a lot of the worlds super bolts happen in the English Channel in the winter and that many of these lead to TLEs (like sprites and elves. I really do wonder that one day somebody in the England will get a crisp sprite capture.

Lightning occurrence at higher latitudes in northwestern Europe is by far less frequent than mainland continental and the Mediterranean during most of…

Photographing sprites in the UK will happen one day  but I feel that any super bolts that do occur will be few and far between, especially in winter, so it'll take some serious dedication to get that shot, and I'm not sure how far you'd need to be from the storm to give clear view of the of the cloud tops and that's before you take into account that it will probably be cloudy in preferred locations further north, maybe the French will have a better chance

    This was taken in Dordogne!😮
