  1. Here is Flensburg 1am local time

Great to see such strong displays after a late start to the 2023 season

Could contain: Spire, Tower, City, Metropolis, Urban, Nature, Night, Outdoors, Lighting, Clock Tower

And quite a few reports from Northern areas on the Glendale app! So it'll be interesting to see what shows up on social media come Morning

    Could contain: Game

I won't be staying up as I have work tomorrow, and I don't think I'd see that much anyway, but it's nice going to bed knowing that the first displays of the season have finally arrived

And the chance of storms is also improving 😁

Looks like they'll be a few late nights to come in the next few weeks!  🥱😴

Stefan on the German NLC forum seems to agree these are the actual first NLCs of the season.

    The translated text reads:

"Noctilucent clouds taken 5 minutes ago near Kaluga!

Height 15° strictly above the northern part of the horizon, field size 40° (in azimuth).

    Author: Anastasia Bilan

    22:55 June 3, 2023"

Almost definitely NLC which is great to see, especially after seeing so many overoptimistic post on social media.

    Very strong echoes this morning

Encouraging signs, with clear skies likely in the coming days, hopefully the UK will get it's first display of the season.

That's also a bit more promising that NLC sightings are on the horizon at least soon - albeit off on a late start.

The Welsh radar which can be hard to pick up echoes at times has seen the first decent echoes so far this year.

The fact that it is picking up echoes, as well as OSWIN around the same time, might indicate there is larger scale cooling of the mesopause which means NLC formation is more likely.

for me, if we can get a reliable indication of whether they are likely or not likely at all..thatll be a start. getting a precise prediction isnt something that can be done.. but it would help if we could at least determine nights when theres no/very little chance, it would save time and effort...

as things stand, without the aim, all we have are euro webcams which arent a very good predictive tool for us. i remember one day last year "flenburgs on fire" someone posted, (arnie?) but there was nothing here... so as things stand, its all random, if conditions are right, stop up, stay sober, go out... which im happy to do IF theres a chance of seeing them. i also dont want to mislead my followers by telling them to go out, then theres nothing!

    Hi guys

I Just want to say thanks to you for taking the time to do research, which I'm sure will help a great deal on giving UK enthusiasts a heads up on the chances of NLCs appearing. The effort is much appreciated!

I did see a couple of reports pop up in the Glendale App last night, one on the east coast, and one at stone henge, but I haven't seen anything pop up on social media, so it's fair to say that is not a very good predictive tool.

Hopefully the European tab will be of more use, as it will give us at least an hours notice, I'd like to see quite few reports from this area before I would think about head out though.

Fingers crossed that it won't be long now.

Very interesting indeed! A great find but I'm struggling to understand it, as I can't seem to get Google to translate it, I'll give it a try on the pc at some point.

Hopefully we don't have to wait too much longer, I think we are still a little early in the season, but only just

Anybody looking out? Another clear night, might be worth it..

I'm currently sat by my front window, keeping an eye out for surprises

12th of June is my earliest sighting, so it might be a little early in the season for me, especially down south.

Have you seen anything online that might give us some idea of tonights chances?

A complete reverse plume today then. Some rare English exports.

Very true, It makes you think, are the French on the other side of the channel, looking at our storms hoping they make the crossing 😂

Somehow I doubt it, but you never know.

I'm currently sat in the car, not far from, Shaftesbury, I can just make out the tops of the cells moving towards Weymouth but they appear to be fading.

Just waiting out this rain that's passing over, before deciding if I'm going to go back home.

I get the feeling that if the sun comes out, there might be a few stragglers that might pop up before eventually fading as we head towards sunset.

What are peoples thoughts on the next few hours?

  7. Looking at the latest Ukv

For Central southern areas, I think the best of the storms have come and gone.

I was hoping to get somewhere to the west,  ahead of the convergence zone, unfortunately the traffic in the area around my work is almost at a standstill, always the case at this time of year on a Friday.

Unfortunately just bad timing, had this been a few hours later I think I would have had a better chance of getting to a decent spot.

chasing daytime storms is not easy!

It's great to see things are looking decent in the south west though, a few more hours of opportunity to come

    Good luck guys

I can see the base of it. That one's developed so quickly out of nowhere! Good looking core on radar.

Looks like it's eased off a little on radar. Just message in the wife who's over in Christchurch and she says it's just rain as far as you can tell, but definitely better chances of storms than I thought there would be, especially for areas further east

    Bodes well for later

The small cells that have developed so far in Oxon seem to be tracking directly southwards as opposed to the SW'ly track shown on models. Either CZs are going to funnel them towards Dorset in the end, or a few more of us to the east of there could be in with a shout.

Impressive cell just developed further east than forecast! You might be in luck 🤞

  10. I'm on the edge of today's convective forecast, ideally the cloud would be starting to break up by now, but it's fairly cloudy.

I have my camera gear at the ready, and I finish work at 3pm, hopefully there will be some positive signs by then, and if anything decent pops up, I'll be heading further west, so fingers crossed.

Hearing some positive talk for things to improve on the storm from towards the end of the month, one to watch ⚡⛈️🌩️

Edit, cloud thinning and and feeling warm now! Fings crossed 😁

Lightning in the Solent...according to the sferics anyway. Watching a scuddy base slowly creep over Cowes.

I was just thinking of heading over Southampton way but the latest radar is looking less promising than it was not too long ago, hope it has some energy left over to give you something.

I might just head out anyway, should be some nice cloudscapes as this lot decays

Disappointing day here as everything has just been out of reach to the north, but good to see so much activity countrywide from home grown storms.

Hopefully we'll have plenty of French imports before the season is out!

I took a gamble and Parked not far from Shaftesbury as it looked like it would be a decent spot for the storms pushing out of the far southwest, it turned out to be the wrong call..

Apart from a couple of rumbles and some very distant lightning, it's been very underwhelming.

However I've learned a decent amount when it comes to filming with the drone, using  ND filters, hopefully that will pay off later in the season 🤞

Good luck for Eastern areas this evening, looking forward to see lots of great footage.

It's a month since the last severe magnetic storm. Maybe it's the same area of the sun rotating around to face earth again. May 23rd/24....

    Could be!

What are people's thoughts as to why we are seeing an increase in Aurora sightings? especially further south.

My instincts are telling me that this is the first decent active cycle for the past 20 years or so and is simply a case of better awareness of unfolding events through apps and social media, plus better cameras to capture any displays that do occur.

If we'd had better cameras and some way of knowing a Storm was likely to happen, I'm sure we would have many more historical photos of past events.

Or is there something else going on, maybe magnetic pole drift?

Also, can anyone point to any historical data as I'm interested in comparing recent activity against past active periods.

    Its all very exciting nevertheless

  14. As expected there are some amazing images being posted from around the country.

I decided to ride back home around 11 but it looks like I should have stayed put 🤣

it was getting very chilly though

    Oh well

This is the best shot I managed, too much light pollution and bad timing. Could contain: Nature, Night, Outdoors, Sky, Scenery, Starry Sky, Light

Already got a time lapse in Latvia going

That's amazing, and it was visible with a decent amount of twilight 😲

I'm picking up a faint glow on my camera, but I shooting through too much light pollution.

I'm Glad I came out though, still impressive for the south coast
