If anyone's interested on what the Met Office think what's going to happen they're having a live broadcast on twitter/Facebook.

Technically it wasn't a Polar Low but its characteristics were pretty similar..If the flow was Northerly it would certainly have been classed as a PL. Here it was when it was just off the Norwegian coast. Edit.. Got BBC News on and the weather presenter just said that the low last night was a Polar low..Maybe the definition should be modified..If certain climatologists are correct and climates are shifting it would make sense to change criteria.

Seems to fit within their predictions..And with pressure lowering slightly as the high edges North the flow becomes more unstable and troughs will develop along the flow..That's my reckoning anyways..!

You might make yersell a few £ if go out in ya Range Rover and rescue those BMW drivers..!!! Mate of mine did it in his Discovery in 2010,think he was getting £25 for every motorist he pulled out..!!

I think they maybe something wrong with your thermometer.. I live not too far from the coast and this weather-station http://www.southshields-weather.co.uk/Today's_weather.htm is even closer and we have temps of only 1.4℃. Going to be another case of nowcasting whether tonight's small Lp has a direct hit to our region.

A few hours might be stretching it a bit.. Plenty of activity out in the North Sea coming this way..Anyways hope it holds off for awhile..just fed the birds and dont want it getting buried just yet..!!

I see the Met Office expect 'Thundersnow' for areas under warnings especially around the coast. https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/warnings#?region=ne&date=2018-02-28®ionType=area

In fairness Gavin (aka Summer Sun) tells of incoming 'milder' weather so keeps it well balanced here..!!

Interesting comments from ESTOFEX for the British Isles today. http://estofex.org/ British Isles A highly dynamic situation evolves late in the period due to an intense trough moving into the British Isles. Its tropopause fault will cause lift and steep lapse rates will evolve. Low-level moisture will decrease from the west, however, warm sea surface will limit the moisture decrease somewhat. Currently, models do not indicate the development of a well-defined low-level convergence line that could support a convective line capable of producing severe wind gusts and tornadoes. Instead, only isolated showers and thunderstorms are expected, capable of producing gusty to locally severe wind gusts and also a tornado is not ruled out. The situation must be monitored in the next model runs as severe potential can increase if linear organization of storms occurs. -

The surface winds are now veering from a SE direction to a S/SSW so this low cloud dragged in from the North sea should thin and disperse. Still there is a sky full of cirrus (thin in parts which) which is pegging back temperatures so the potential severe storms may not materialise here in the North East. Still early and storms aren't progged for this area until 6pm onwards anyway. -

If these incoming storms leave cirrus in their wake it doesn't bode well as surface heating will be compromised, but I live in hope as the storms earlier cleared to unbroken sunshine. -

http://estofex.org/ A level 2 was issued for Northern England mainly for (very) large hail, severe wind gusts and tornadoes. -
