DP's have crashed in the last hour. Down to -4c here in Southend which wont help. Very dry air!

Radar returns clearly reducing in the N'Sea/Estuary as the wind now has a more E'ly influence and the cold pool slips away to our west.
A few more light/mod showers to come for our region in the next few hours or so, then a cold night to follow.
Nice to see a dusting for some in our region.- 2

Our snow window runs until about 10pm this evening, at which point the coldest of the upper air will have moved through our region. We are peaking about now.

If only it would settle...
Yeah, ground is too warm and showers aren't heavy enough for long enough. Only hope is after dark for proper accumulation.

Heaviest shower of the day just passed through Southend. Decent sized flakes.

It has that telling snow grain vibe so far, that gives me a red flag. Certainly here in SE Essex anyway.
Shower clouds are being capped and intensity reduced. Limiting activity to brief showers of grains and small flakes.- 2

A few grains and small flakes have been falling here in Southend on/off for the last hour or so. Not enough to accumulate.
The grains are usually a sign that convection can't quite get going yet. But, it's having a go.

Pleased to see some of you have had at least a covering of snow overnight and this morning.
No such luck around Southend again though. Flakes falling but nothing at all settling. Still not had any settling snow this winter. -

Dp at 1.1.
0.5 rise in an hour
Ridiculous. Just back from a drive. Had to see the madness with my own eyes. Snow line starts at Hadleigh on the A13. All points east it’s Rain. 5 bloody miles is all it takes.

You know it isn’t your day when even central London gets snow and you don’t.
Snow to the left of me, snow to the right here I am, stuck in the middle with rain.

What a utter frustration
Rained all evening, turned to snow briefly and gave a slushy covering and now it’s gone back to rain. I don’t get it!
I live by the estuary but places like Canvey further south have had massive flakes and a very decent covering!
Same here in Southend, Matty.

Local variations quite incredible here in South Essex.
Southend : Rain with the odd flake.
5 miles away in Hockley, Rayleigh and all points west 1-3” of snow.

Still rain with the odd flake in Southend. Disappointing but that’s the downside of being a coastal location.

Models aren’t great at convection. I was feeling confident yesterday morning after the previous failings from the models in the SW and NW.
My biggest fear is the DPs rising, as the wind swings round.
That will be the killer for us in Southend. The warm bath next to us.

In my opinion the best spells of snow have a period of proper cold preceding it. Get the cold locked in first then anything can happen.

Time to come out of hibernation. Hello again everyone

Well at least something more seasonal looks upon us next week. Finer details yet to be determined of course. I’d imagine this thread will be getting a bit livelier soon! It’s good to be back

Terrible news from my area with the sad and tragic news of Sir David Amess MP, being brutally stabbed to death earlier today. What an awful world we live in. RIP Sir David and condolences to his family especially his Wife and 5 Children.

Hi again all. Hope everyone is keeping well. It’s getting towards that time again where I come out of hibernation searching for some autumn storms and then the all important snow…
Looking forward to catching up with you guys soon.

Like everyone on here we have had a exciting week, everyone in Norfolk saw snow, and love the dry air that has made the main roads dry and the snow in the countryside....just like if I was in the alps without the hills...
Now bring on the warmth why some people want to look out for cold still is beyond me, why?
It’s like a drug. Once you have a taste you want more. Even more so if you had a taste years ago and are still looking for that hit.

Reminds me of somewhere like Tallinn out there this evening. Dry compact snow everywhere, clumps that have sublimated in south facing areas and that biting dry wind. Pretty surreal and impressive for this part of the world.

Well this has been a pretty non-descript cold spell in South Essex. Not a flake of snow and not even a frost (air too dry). Cold by day, some sun and some pretty chilly nights, but overall just the run of the mill winter cold spell. Not unexpected though considering it's a Northerly influence.
Eyes now on week 1/2 of February before any hope of another cold shot. Hopefully this one delivers and comes from an Easterly/North Easterly direction.
