  1. No sleet/rain shower here but there was a surprisingly heavy frost after an overnight low of -1°C. It's not too bad once on the frost hardened usually muddy footpaths and fields but the pavements were too treacherous for me to go out in the dark this morning. Have a right shoulder rotator cuff injury with limited movement and got too scared of slipping and making it worse (bad enough not getting much sleep for last 6 weeks). Got as far as the end of the drive and slid on the pavement dip towards the road - poor dog was turned around and had to go out with his Daddy human for a quick and business-like (ha!) walk with very little available sniff time - so he didn't pick up any doggy gossip this morning. Currently 4°C with 72% humidity and the earlier sun has vanished. Wind from a NW direction and has just registered 5mph, with average over 2 minutes 3.4 and 10 minutes at 3.2 mph. Pressure 1036.9hPa steady. No rain has fallen since 11th January. A couple of 0.2mm registered since the 11th is, I think, probably frost melt as nothing fell from the sky on those two days. Another sunny start off-setting the white lawns and hedges beautifully but now dull, cloudy, still and cold. All rather meh.
  2. Lovely photos, I particularly love the bottom one for the delicate water colour wash effect. Your black and white photo - when I saw it my first reaction was 'Oh this reminds me of pre WWII photos' Then I thought about why that might be the first impression and why I felt a yearning sense of nostalgia (not that I'm old enough to have experienced pre WII landscapes; despite feeling that old after nearly 2 years of Covid impacting my NHS workload). I guess that with no traffic, none of the (necessary but ghastly) road signs we see everywhere nowadays and with the more traditional over ground poles and wiring, this could be a photo taken many decades ago and has a timeless but slower pace of life quality. Keep your photos coming please Eagle Eye - I love your creativity and how you record the weather, yet the photos also invoke non-weather thoughts and emotions as well
  3. Cracking day here also. Lovely hard frost for walking the dog over the former mud wrestling footpaths and fields. Pavements a bit dodgy/slippery though. Daylight brought a hint of Dickensian style, to the older village houses and their white rooftops. My conservatory certainly possessed a Dickensian indoor temperature early this morning! (haven't used the conservatory since Sunday and cutting back on heating rooms we aren't using). Overnight low was -3°C at 06:32 and didn't get above freezing until 10:30am. Currently 7.3°C with 83% humidity. Until half an hour ago with a SSW 2mph reading, no wind has registered since the 1.0 mph at 2pm yesterday. Pressure is 1036.7hPa steady and no rain has fallen since the .48mm on the afternoon of Tuesday 11th January.
  4. So sorry that you lost your bus pass. Did you manage to find it? If not, how long will it take to get a replacement?
  5. Hard frost this morning after an overnight low of -1.9°C. another lovely sunny day although didn't manage to get outside due to work pressures. Top temp of 8°C at 14:43. Currently -2°C with dewpoint of -2.5°C. Max windspeed of 2mph recorded at 14:00 from a WSW direction. No windspeed recorded before or after that today. Pressure currently 1030.7hPa falling slowly. Expecting more cloud tomorrow and Sunday unfortunately as the only days I'll be able to get outside during daylight hours until next weekend. Still, the last few days of sun, frosts, clear visibility and a slight reduction in mud for pre dawn walks have been delightful, and very grateful for them.
  6. Beautiful day here after yesterday's depressing permagloom; everything white earlier although bit misty so sun didn't appear until around 8am. Since then sunshine and clear blue sky, with just this high level cloud, facing east of where I'm currently working. Weather station reporting 4.7°C at home, after an overnight low of -1°C. Very light SW wind, 3.9mph 10 minute average. Pressure 1040.4hPa steady. .8mm of rain has fallen in last 24 hours.
  7. How lovely and what a mood enhancer! Enough of a frost earlier to harden the mud slightly for early dog walk. Beautiful blue sky and sun with really clear visibility for a change. Can easily see the young buzzard sitting patiently in neighbour but one’s tree who, with its parent, regularly quarters our back garden and the open meadow land beyond. Even when the rooks buzz his(?) tree, he/she is sitting tight unless they get really close. Then it will do a quick circle and land on the same branch to wait for Mama to come back with some food. The only downside to the new neighbours is it seems to have discouraged the local red kites from regularly flying over our garden. Unfortunately, cloud is expected back this afternoon and can see it approaching. Still, this glorious morning has been a rare and much appreciated treat.
  8. Evening all, cold rain this morning on the dog walk, mud, lots of mud. With most of the field slimed on the underside of the dog. Low light and just enough wind to get the rain straight in our faces. Repeat during late afternoon walk, with exception that it was dark on the return section, very effectively hiding the most slippy slidey bits. What's not to like about January in England Currently 6C after a high of 10.8C at 14:30. Wind from a WNW direction and 6mph. Pressure currently 993.4hPa slowly rising. Have had 3.3mm of rain since midnight - my dog and I will swear to that being incorrect and there's been at least eleventy billion times more than that!
  9. What a great winter day today; a hard frost this morning making the pitch dark early dog walk far easier, with no slippages in the disgusting slimy mud for a change. And then sun all day - beautiful and uplifting, even though experienced vicariously through windows. Unfortunately too busy to have a break to get outside to check the sunshine was actually real. Out after dark this evening with my dog and feeling bitterly cold. Currently -0.3°C with 87% humidity, following a top temp here today of 6°C at 13:56. No wind is registering. Pressure 1019.4hPa rising slowly. Today's weather highlight: some rare sunshine and the loss of that endless, awful heavy cloud that hasn't really enabled the days to get properly light *good-bye evil cloud, long time no return * Edit: Not the goodbye that was said in my head mind
  10. No thunder today (pleased about that after NYE’s local fireworks reduced my dear dog to a quivering shaking state of anxiety all evening after the tea time lot started and carried on and off until midnight and beyond) but the sky went black and we had some lively rainfall at a rate of 25.2. After all the drama of trees thrashing about and conservatory sounding as though we were going through a carwash, only had a recorded 5.4mm of rain between 2:30 - 3:30pm. Sky looked nice to the west though once the rain stopped. Today’s highlight was that at 4:40pm there was still some light in the sky (2nd photo) yay the days are getting longer
  11. A much brighter start to the day and as the clouds scudded across the sky there were even glimpses of blue. Sun didn't quite make it out but what a difference the increase in light made to lift spirits. Top temperature today was 15.8°C at 11:30 after an overnight low of 14.8°C - amazing. I'm sure the grass is growing. Currently 14.7°C with 81% humidity. Wind WSW 16mph. Pressure 1012.9hPa steady. No rain has fallen in the last 24 hours.
  12. Hello, long time no post. Got my annual leave interrupted as I feared and the time I've had off hasn't been restful, especially when having to shower vast quantities of mud off the dog, my wellies and his harness every single time I've taken him out for a walk in the last week, so have been falling into bed without going through my beloved weather station stats each day , or doing anything else enjoyable for that matter. Didn't even manage to ice the Christmas Cake that I made, and have been feeding with about a third of a bottle of rum over the last 6 weeks, until Boxing Day evening. Jolly good thing the family were too full up to ask for any until yesterday. And when they did see it, one of my Three Evil Geniuses (aka my children) asked why Baby Jesus had been run over by a tractor and flattened. So I had to explain that was the least of Baby Jesus' concerns. That he is sadly now an orphan. Joseph and Mary decided to nip across the channel to buy some duty free disposable nappies but unfortunately the descendent of King Herod, the Princess Darkness Pretty Patello, torpedoed their kayak on the return journey. So he's under the temporary guardianship of the Three Wise Men until the miracle of parental resurrection takes place for his birth next year. (Can't find Mary and Joseph but this sounded more positive - they don't take prisoners, my children. Plus it diverted them from asking where the shepherds had also got to - as you can see those sheep are not under any kind of control and wander around the place at will). I am an abject failure as a Mummy and Domestic Goddess this year!! Today the top temperature reached 15.1°C at 13:24. Currently 14°C and possibly warmer outside than my study. Humidity is 87%. Wind has been mainly from a WSW direction, with mild flirtation with the West during early afternoon before veering back to a WSWesterly; wind speed up into double figures from noon to 7:30 pm and currently averaging 7.4mph over 2 minutes and a flighty 9mph average over the last 10 minutes. Pressure currently 1006.6hPa rising rapidly. Since midnight 1mm of rain has fallen - that's so not fair and only because I've been at work all day and it could have been pishing down and it wouldn't have mattered, unlike every time I've taken my dog out since Christmas Day. A belated Happy Christmas everyone!
  13. Overnight low here was -3.1°C and a heavy frost - love the frost because it means no mud on the dog to clean off. Such a joy to see the sunrise and a lift to the spirit after such a long period of cloud and dullness. Today's high was 3.6c at 3pm. Falling down to 2.8 then from 8pm gradually rising to the current 3°C. Very light wind again, mostly ESE before veering SSW around 8:30pm. Stopped off to see what vegetables and salad items were left on way home from work, Dry when I went in at 8:30 and pouring with rain around 9pm when I came out. Didn't last long and has registered as .6mm. Pressure currently 1021.1hPa falling rapidly. A few of the rare sunrise taken on my phone - posting so I can see in a bigger format - and because this was the highlight of the day.
  14. Oh bless you and thank you - I'll share your comment with my colleagues, a lot of whom are far more deserving of your thanks. Goodnight
  15. Hello for the first time in several days. Am so tired from existing on 5 (or fewer) hours sleep for the last 10 days, courtesy of Omicron, that I caught up with pages of the regional thread before realising its been replaced with this sparkling new group. Then it took me ages to work out, from the bewildering list to choose from, where to put a basic weather update. This is hardly going to reassure anyone reading this pathetic post that I'm a reliable member of the NHS capable of functioning at the level and breadth of responsibility my role requires I must get to bed early tonight! Forgotten when we last had any sun - I'm sure there was some earlier in the year but maybe that's a sleep deprived fantasy - similar to the one where I'm not going to be called back in on Christmas or Boxing day due the numbers of staff off ill with Covid just as the system tips into critical incident mode. Today's top temp here reached 5°C (look at what I did there with the ° maybe I'm still capable of making creative, if not responsible, actions to some extent after all). Currently 2°C with 83% humidity. Wind: from midnight to 09:30 today flatlined zero registered on weather station, then ENE, East, veering ESE at 1mph with very occasional gusts between 2 and 4mph. A moment of excitement at 18:00 to take the Highest Gust Of The Day Award with 7mph. Currently back to zero. Pressure: currently 1023.6hPa although this is the lowest reading since 6pm on 13th December and has been very slowly dropping from the high of 1040.9hPa on 17th December. No rain has fallen in the last 24 hours, with only .6mm since early hours of Sunday 12th December. Todays highlight: It's Winter Solstice and the afternoons will get longer - Yay!! now that's something tangible to celebrate in this uncertain and worrying time for so many. Take care of yourselves and for those who have tested positive, my sincere best wishes that you experience, at worst, a bad few days before starting to recover. If that recovery isn't happening then please ask for help - despite the punch drunk, over tired somewhat self-directed irreverence of this post - the NHS is still here for everyone who needs it. On a serious note, it's still rather amazing, all things taken into account since this pandemic started nearly 2 years ago. Night all.
  16. No sun here again, although we did get a max temperature of 13.1C at 13:00. Current temperature is a balmy 11C with 85% humidity. Wind, best described as a pleasant breeze has been from a WNW direction with highest gust (briefly) of 14mph which barely shifted the bare tree branches. As is very typical around here winds fall light mid to late afternoon, currently wind speed 3mph. Pressure is currently 1033.0hPa rising slowly. No rain has fallen in the last 24 hours, in fact none since a wee sprinkling in the early hours of 12 December. I'd like to see the sun again, please. Nice mild weather for dog walking but on balance would prefer cold and crisp so long as its sunny.
  17. Today's top temperature here was 12.4C at 11:34 but for the life of me I can't remember whether we had any sun today. Didn't look up from computer and/or from emergency meetings all day - PM's addresses to the nation tend to herald a crazy work day and last night's certainly created one of those. Currently its 10C with 88% humidity. Wind from SW and generally light, currently 3mph. Pressure 1023.5hPa steady. No rain has fallen since .8mm early hours of Sunday morning - was that only yesterday!
  18. Don't understand; did a full weather report but it hasn't posted. Sleep deprived from working more than 15 hours every day this week, so I'll just say it was windier from Storm Barra overnight Tuesday than during the day. Yesterday late evening we had more rain in an hour than November's month total. Sunny today but bitter out in the WNW wind, gusting in high 20's since midnight. Currently 4C and need to thaw out in front of the fire after a muddy, slippery evening dog walk, although suspect will be asleep the minute I sit down. Still, did find and set up a new booster vaccination site today, so that's worth a glass of wine I reckon. Stay safe everyone.
  19. I was thinking about @Blazerblue this morning walking the dog. In the dark, on slippery pavements and roads. Luckily my dog walks to heel on the lead but even so it was stressful doing a Bambi on ice impression and hoping I wasn't going to hit the ground (as already sporting a shoulder injury). After an overnight low of 0.7C, the high today was 7C at 15:10. currently 6C with 80% humidity. Wind today was from a Se and ESE direction, not anything out of the ordinary for this time of year, max gust of 27mph at 13:30. From 18:30 wind direction has been from the SW, now W with most recent gust of 21mph. Pressure fell rapidly all day, currently 983.1hPa and falling slowly. Weather station has registered 3mm of rain since midnight, although the short intense bursts appeared to throw down more than that. No dramatic sunrise photos but managed to stand in the cold long enough to point phone before what sunrise we had quickly got obscured by cloud. These photos were taken circa 5 minutes apart to record how the colours changed in that time frame (have kept this sort of visual data in my sunrise album for years). It's been dark and gloomy all day and fully dark by 3:30pm. How I'm longing for the winter solstice on 21 December, then I can cheer myself up by the mantra that we're over the hump and each day's light will increase.
  20. Some lovely photos on here today. I could see some pink as the sun started to come up and ran for the camera, only to find cloud had very quickly obscured any sunrise in this area. Therefore just another bland day of stats to report after a dull, cold and rather miserable day. Max temperature of 7C today, up from the overnight low of 1.8C at 07:30. Currently temp is 3C with 85% humidity. Wind mostly from a SSW direction with highest gust briefly 21mph, veering Westerly and becoming light. Just shifting to WSW and 4mph. Pressure currently 1006.9hPa rising slowly. We've had a total of 1.8mm rain in the last 24 hours. Today's weather highlight.....the sunrise photos from other members!
  21. Hello it's nice to catch up several pages and see that some of you were able to post snow photos from Thursday's surprise. Nothing like that here, although Thursday did produce a pretty, although undramatic, sunset. There haven't been the usual stunning and dramatic sunsets through 2020 and 2021 which has puzzled me greatly. No sunsets at all since Thursday, due to the almost constant permagloom since. Today got to a high of 7.1C at 14:45 although with a NN Westerly it felt bitter when outside throwing the ball for my dog and his brother who came to lunch today. Currently 4C with 89% humidity. Wind is 4.1mph from the NW. Pressure 1013.9HPa rising slowly. 1.4mm of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours. Recent weather highlight was Thursday's sky
  22. What a difference a day makes...high of 11.8C today. Overnight low was 5C at midnight but by 08:30 is was 10 degrees! Currently 11C with 83% humidity. Didn't notice any wind in Cambridge when Christmas shopping today with my daughter. Mind you we had to keep our eyes out for the sodding bicycles and the latest stealth killing tactic they use - silent electric bikes that I swear were over the speed limit... Nice sunset earlier before the cloud arrived. Pressure 1000.5hPa falling rapidly. No rain in the last 24 hours.
  23. Weather station recorded a high of 2.4C at 13:30 after an overnight low of -3. It then dropped to 1.1C until 5pm when it's started creeping up again. Currently 2.1C with 86% humidity. The house has felt cold all day, despite turning the radiators up to create eye wateringly scary increases on the gas and electric smart meter. So lit the wood burner and going to stay in front of it until bedtime. Light wind from WSW today, although have just crept into double figures with a gust of 12mph. Pressure is 1014.5hPa steady. No rain, or anything else, has fallen since the brief snow fall 24 hours ago.
  24. That sounds stressful for both you and your collie, bless him. In the meantime your spaniel blithely unaware he/she? could be leaving a trail of chaos behind… Glad you and your collie got home unhurt! Here, it’s been the hardest frost thus far of Autumn/Winter 21/22. Bitter outside with slippery pavements to get to the far safer open country walks. -3C at 7am.
