  1. It’s been a rather benign winter bookended by cold weather. Currently mid minus 20’s and nighttime lows in minus 30’s. Edmonton currently has a cold weather warning for wind chills in the minus 40’s. That’ll make @cheeky_monkeyhappy...
  2. I’m sure I read a post a few days ago (might have even been from a professional) having a go at people thinking there might be a Scandi high anytime soon and now the models are potentially showing one. Fingers crossed for those in the SE the easterlies come a screaming with lots of snow
  3. True - it’s a large country. They seem to think W Canada at the moment
  4. Most things improve over time but strangely I prefer the graphics from nearly 30 years ago
  5. Canadian forecasters are being quite bullish about a very cold February due to an SSW and subsequent split and a chunk of PV sitting over Canada as a result. Not sure what that would mean for the UK though.
  6. Every year for me lol. We listened to the radio snow show where they listed all the schools closed every morning. Was like Christmas Day when they mentioned your school. Anyway model chat - control looks interesting...
  7. 1987 - for 3 exceptional weather events that stood out to me and the fact I was 10. It’s the year that started my obsession with weather. Jan 1987 - no explanation required. The holy grail of snow and cold. Never been matched since. I just remember waking up day after day with fresh snow on the ground. A week off school. Fantastic. Aug 1987 - (22nd?) massive storms as we drove from Kent to Devon for our annual holiday that seemed to go on all night - vividly remember Stonehenge being lit up by lightning. Oct 1987 - the great storm - hearing the roaring and then walking round our village in the morning seeing all the trees down was just mind blowing.
  8. Good shout - I swear by Nokian winter tires. When I first moved to Canada I played around with all season, and some other named winter tires. But I noticed a huge difference with Nokian. Especially in icy conditions. Wouldn’t use anything else now.
  9. When it’s unusually cold like this then yes. I’ve had it happen at my rental place. Lots of issues in the city at the moment... Hundreds of homes without water as crews scramble to repair burst pipes in freezing cold BETA.CTVNEWS.CA Days into a freezing cold that is gripping the Prairies, Calgary is dealing with water main breaks all over the city. I remember once the municipal building downtown Canmore had burst pipes and most of downtown got flooded and it froze. Absolute mayhem
  10. I’m just going to leave this here. Nothing more to add - it’s cold as fcuk. Nothing good comes from minus 55oC windchill.
  11. Yup the cold Arctic air flooding out is pretty damn cold... minus 47oC this morning. Oh well at least tonight is only going to get down to minus 55oC wind chill. Ive had about a 25oC change in temp in an hour or so and that was insane. ^ That is off the charts
  12. I agree - it’s like when it’s 40oC in summer. Just unnecessary extremes. Thank you - you too! It’s thankfully usually once a year affair in the minus 40’s where most hibernate and wait it out. Mind you I’ve never felt cold indoors during these temps. And the shops (if they don’t have underground parking) have plug ins for the cars so they don’t freeze up. Still - it does hurt the body though. Alcohol always helps lol
  13. Lol this did make me chuckle. Definitely not a fan of mild, windy, soggy weather but can I swap weather for a day just to warm the cockles lol Looking like possible cold and snow returning to Scotland soon though so hopefully not too long to endure the current dross. I’m looking at flying over to Scotland to visit my brother over the festive period - hopefully the white stuff returns Some of the best Christmases I’ve had have been in Scotland, not just because of snowy weather but the people too. Love it.
  14. As mentioned above Vancouver getting unusually cold and snowy weather impacting outdoors events and flights, from an arctic outflow. That arctic air is being felt in Alberta. It’s cold. Currently minus 42 windchill Extreme cold warning and possible frostbite in minutes. Impressive cold air temps and dew points though. Hopefully warming up just in time for Christmas.
  15. At the start of the new year in 1987 I’m sure there was an Arctic high, mild Sw’s across Uk, high pressure to the south and within a week or so we know what happened next. My point is no matter how dire it may seem, things can change very quickly.
  16. Clicked on link expecting ‘heavy snow video’ to be a few big snowflakes. Wasn’t disappointed. Probably one of the heaviest snow videos I’ve seen. Very impressive! It’s one of the rare times I thought the clip was too short. Could have been two minutes long and I’d have watched til the end...many times lol. Thanks for sharing. I was going to post a pic of my brothers garden in Killearn but after this I don’t think I’ll bother
  17. Just woke up to some great pics from a friend who went to blue bell hill. Said in places there was 7 inches of level snow. (Not sure if they took a ruler lol) Crazy totals.
  18. I did think blue bell hill would be one of the worst hit, based on experience. Reports of up to 6 inches (15cm’s) in and around that area coming in. The video certainly looks like it could be close to that. I’ve attached a still from it.
  19. Friends in Medway have said they have had about 7cm in the last 2 hours and it’s still going
  20. I have experienced freezing rain at minus 7 in Canada. I tried driving in it but the rain just froze everything solid as soon as it touched it....sidewalks, windscreens etc. Treacherous.
  21. If you live around north Kent and particularly blue bell hill region I’d say that’s looking prime for some of the deepest snows, both from the system that’s moving in but also if the winds turn NE afterwards for convective showers off the sea. Obviously elevation key particularly if there’s a wind change. That’s based on the info now but could change of course. However as the Met O have said I think many places could do well out of this though
  22. I have lived in Canada on and off for nearly 20 years. Often it gets to minus 20 with lots of snow - but nothing gets me more excited than a cold spell for the SE (where I lived for a lot of my early life) This upcoming spell looks like it has the potential to deliver anything and everything. From a trough moving south dumping a quick 5-8cm (like 2004) to raging easterlies and sea effect snow producing 1-2ft (1987/2018) to stalled channel lows and a dumping of snow producing 1 feet of snow (name the years) For me the excitement goes back to being a child of 10 in Jan 1987 and being amazed every day at the insane depths of snow that can fall and how it can change how people are. I remember noticing that everyone seemed much happier and talked more to neighbours and pulled together in times of adversity. Quite impactful to a 10 year old at the time. I’ll be following the developments with great interest and hope that the SE gets absolutely buried in snow (with the usual caveat that everyone is safe and warm) Happy snow chasing SE family
  23. We had something similar in Jan 2004 that swept south and gave most of the country a quick 5cm or so. That was intense and also produced thundersnow. A repeat perhaps ...
  24. Standard chilly Rockies weather Dangerously cold weather on the way though. Minus 40’s! And weather warnings for almost all of the Alberta. This is the only time I am cautious and and take it seriously. I’ve walked back from the pub in this weather. I wouldn’t recommend it. Yeah think we had it early then it moved east mid morning. Enough to cause disruption. Now the real cold sets in. This is when I genuinely dislike the weather
  25. A few pics from the snow squall that came through the other day. 10-15cm’s quite quickly depending on where in Town you are. More snow overnight and this morning with overnight lows of minus 23.
