  1. Yes it's something to be proud of. You should hear the way everyone is going on here in Nottingham at work. You would think there was a foot, not 5cm! Schools closed all over the area too. Soft southerners!
  2. Maybe it's a good thing that I don't work in Consett any more, but I certainly would have loved the challenge of trying to get there, and back again! There is something about driving in severe weather that makes me feel so alive. I will be following this thread today with interest, not a lot to do at work!
  3. I miss the north east I'm so jealous of you lot up there! Wish I was back home in Stanley as everything that falls on Monday should definitely be snow. Good luck everyone, hope there is still plenty when I come up on Friday, if I can make it through another possible snow event as the Atlantic tries again to come in! Would be great to see some pics of your snow.
  4. How is the depth looking in Nottingham? We seem to have a bit of a microclimate in among this group of buildings and from what I can see there is only a thin dusting. People in Notts seem to be getting a bit excited so I guess there is more than what I can see.
  5. That's 8 of our offices now closed due to snow, hurry up and snow more in Nottingham please! Now there's nobody to send me work so I'm bored. Still fairly light here but settling a little at Castle Meadows.
  6. Few of our offices closing now... Southampton is closing at midday today. Shrewsbury remains open but with limited staff. Liverpool are now closing at 12.30. Wolverhampton and Stoke on Trent Office have closed. Birmingham is open but running with limited staff. Please hurry here! Radar not looking great though.
  7. Not looking good at the moment for those of us NE of the band. I don't think we will see a new covering for at least 2-3 hours. Hopefully still a few cms to come later though, and further chances over the weekend.
  8. New Met Office text forecast still sounding good for East Midlands. Apparently issued at 4pm... Headline: Cold with snow on Friday. Bitter southeasterly winds developing. This Evening and Tonight: Frosty and rather cloudy with a few light snow flurries overnight although some clearer spells may develop across southern areas. A bitterly cold southeasterly wind is expected to increase through the night. Minimum Temperature -4 °C. Friday: Snow flurries mainly affecting Lincolnshire initially. Snow spreading across from the southwest during the morning. Then persisting for much of the day with some disruption possible. Bitter southeasterly winds. Maximum Temperature 0 °C. Outlook for Saturday to Monday: Very cold with an ice risk throughout. Windy with further snow likely Saturday. Winds ease Sunday, mainly dry but rather dull and cloudy. Outbreaks of sleet or snow likely Monday. Issued at: 1600 on Thu 17 Jan 2013 http://www.metoffice...egionalForecast After feeling pessimistic this morning I'm feeling far more positive now
  9. It's expanding west now towards Nottingham. Met Office have updated their symbols... http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/forecast/nottingham#?tab=fiveDay Changed to heavy snow at 18:00 This could be a nice surprise!
  10. Yes I thought it looked a bit weird too. The text for the yellow warning mentions Wales, SW England and NI for the main band, with showers in eastern coastal districts. According to that text alone we maybe shouldn't even be under the yellow. The orange warning hasn't been updated yet, so keep an eye out for that soon.
  11. The Met Office have just updated their text forecast... This Evening and Tonight: Snow will clear away southwards. As clear periods develop a widespread frost will develop, along with ice on untreated surfaces. Later scattered snow showers will arrive, mainly towards the coast. Minimum Temperature -4 °C. Tuesday: Lincolnshire will have occasional snow showers, some also heavy and so giving further local accumulations, especially near the coast. Elsewhere sunny spells and occasional light snow showers. Cold everywhere. Maximum Temperature 2 °C. Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Remaining cold, with hard overnight frosts and ice on untreated surfaces. Scattered wintry showers will continue, especially Wednesday across Lincolnshire. Generally the showers will become lighter. Issued at: 1600 on Mon 14 Jan 2013 As I thought, for most of us the best we can expect is a few rogue showers in the next few days. Cold and dry is still better than what we've had this winter up to now, so I'm not complaining. Hopefully the weekend will deliver.
  12. It's more likely they won't arrive in Nottingham at all. Our best chance of more showers will probably come from the east I think, if they can make it this far inland. I'm not expecting anything more in the next few days really, starting to look towards the weekend now. Beat me to it ST!
  13. Seems to be melting a bit here, dropping off trees and melting from roads and paths fairly quickly. Would love to get a good few hours of heavy snow when the Altantic tries to come back in, whenever that will be, I really enjoy those events. Missing being up in the north east, I'm going to be so jealous when the heavy snow showers start blowing in
  14. Starting to cover the cars, roofs and grass a bit here near Nottingham city centre. This is nice to see, snow finally. Looking forward to the main even tomorrow, just a shame I will be in work most of the day, might have to use up a bit of flexi-time and leave early! That'll hurt! It was bad enough for me moving from County Durham to Nottingham, you are taking it a step further!
  15. I just used my sat nav for navigation, and regular stops in lay-bys to check the Netweather radar/forum on my smartphone. I normally stop for filming/photography, but I have attempted it while driving before, although I wouldn't recommend it.
  16. Looks like I might have an interesting train journey in the morning, leaving Nottingham at 05:20 heading to Newcastle via Chesterfield. Just a shame my mam probably won't be able to get to Newcastle from Stanley to pick me up! If I get any decent pics while I'm on the train I'll try to share them on here if that's possible on my mobile. It's been a while since I posted on here, but it's nice to be back, hope everyone is ok and hope you all get what you want
  17. Looking very good already on radar, but nothing much going on around Nottingham area just yet. I wonder if the Met Office might put out an amber warning? I don't think I'd feel comfortable with only yellow if I was them. Could be some really high rainfall totals today especially in the areas where showers are most slow moving. Good luck everyone, especially if you are heading out chasing. My options are limited today because I have to drive to pick up my gf at short notice anytime between 3 and 6! So I'll probably just watch and hope from my window this time.
  18. Good to hear about thunder in Birmingham. Looks like that's heading directly for me on radar. Can't remember the last time I had a good chance of night time lightning, feels like a long time. Camera will be ready but am I right in assuming that most of the lightning tonight will be IC rather than CG?
  19. Good luck tomorrow Supacell. I definitely agree about the traffic and cities. I've experienced the immense frustration of missing a big storm due to being stuck in traffic, (tried to drive through Grantham on the day the olympic torch was there!) Unfortunately I'm not in Nottingham this weekend, I'm back up in the North East, or else I would have been out too. A few days ago I was looking well placed up here but it's gone a bit downhill since then.
  20. I'm up in the North East for the weekend and I was hoping for some more of the storms that have happened up here in the last couple of months. It did look promising a couple of days ago but not looking so good now after a few downgrades. Now looks more likely that Nottingham will get something while I'm not there which would be typical. Still the Met Office mention possible thunder later tomorrow, so I will be keeping a close eye on things during the day and if there is something I'll probably get out and chase it, but certainly not going all the way down to the Midlands or South Yorks.
  21. Sferics on the squall line west of Liverpool now. Looking good for the Midlands too, just hope it can hold together enough to give a storm here.
  22. Yeah I see it and it's stretching all the way to NI. Still just the southern bit near Oxford with sferics at the moment, but that might well change soon. Might even be in line for some action here later if it continues it's journey north without losing intensity.
  23. Wow that supercell photo is amazing! Thanks for sharing. I have finally had time to go through all the weekends photos. On Saturday I chased on foot in the fields around my girlfriends parents house at Warthill, east of York. I got drenched as I took a direct hit and had nowhere to shelter. It was actually quite scary as some CGs started getting closer and I had nowhere to hide. I didn't manage to get any lightning photos because it was raining too much, but I did get one still from a video which is below, and I'm happy with the other photos I got. I've always wanted to get photos of corn fields with an angry storm behind. So here are Saturdays photos... So now onto Sunday. There was a very nice storm building near York heading north, it was going to pass to the west of here so I had an idea that Sutton Bank might be a good place to go to see it pass by as the views from up there are amazing. I spent about 3 hours up there, and watched three storms in total. The final one was intensifying close to me, there was some very impressive rotation and a short lived funnel. It was only small but probably my best UK funnel cloud. I was praying it would come down further as I had such a perfect view. Again lightning photography opportunities were limited. The storms were mostly too far away to see the lightning. Here are a few photos... So a very pleasing weekend, and it was a good time to come to my GFs parents house, it's been a good base. No chasing plans today, got to head back to Nottingham sometime, but my old home in the North East looks in the firing line today.
  24. Spent about 3 hours at Sutton Bank, North Yorks today. Saw a couple of storms passing by to my west and one forming very close, even saw a funnel and quite a lot of rotation. I have a short video and some pics which I'll try to upload later. Still got to go through yesterdays pics yet. Looks like another storm approaching here just east of York, but I will probably be sitting down to have tea with my girlfriends family around the time it's due to hit EDIT: Love that funnel pic! Very jealous. The one I saw was very small in comparison. I was in such a perfect location too, I was begging it to come down further.
  25. It's just west of me now near York. Quite a lot of thunder and very impressive convection. I'm just about to head up to Sutton Bank and hopefully make it there before the storms and get some pics. Haven't even had a chance to sort through yesterdays pics yet. I'm off, good luck all
