I reckon so, I can see it being a very slow breakdown with a few failed attempts. I can see the south coast being plastered with sleet and snow for a time too before it properly breaks down. Believe me I'm not surprised at all, Runcorn does quite well I think, well it has now! Any settling?

I guess the air isn't technically that cold (no colder than any other northerly or easterly), it's more a surface inversion type cold going on.. the sort that will lead to low night temperatures in inland and low lying areas. It will, apparently also lead to rain, sleet and ice pellets.

annnd guess what's happened.. cloud from the north (minus the snow) has spread in, and sent the temperature above 0C!

Maybe, I can't fathom what's going on to be honest. Last night there was promise of some wintry precipitation which never came, I think the bands have been way out west, as they usually are, in a northerly. Rather interesting tonight as the seaward air fetch (NW) has not moderated temperatures like I thought it would tonight. That means it'll be very cold, and perhaps, if something does come along it will be snow. It's surprising there is very little precipitation in this low, as it stands.

its our side of the Wirral's turn for the cold and frost tonight, already down to -1C, I think my dawn it will be -3 or -4C making the coldest night since 2018 no doubt.

Glorious day here, that sun is surprisingly potent for December. I would not be surprised if the uv index is as high as 2 today which would be quite unusual for approaching the shortest day of the year. Currently a pleasant 4C

Views of some snow over the Welsh mountains from home this morning!

We've finally got an air frost here, and there is a light frost too. The sky must have cleared overnight and the breeze died. Dropped to -1C, it looks like a cold day today, still at 0.2C

The odd bit of cloud floating around from the showers over Wales have scuppered any real cold, as its currently 0.6C as a low, especially when further east it looks baltic. Some impressive temperatures in places it seems. There are going to be some epic frosty scenes at sunrise in places.

2.6C and rising, and sometimes falling slightly, it's basically around 2C and thats it. Amazing to see the differences across a relatively small areas. West Kirby up the coast here is 5C, yet a similar distance southeast its -2C.

2.2C here, slowly dropping, even with cloud cover. Showers forming in the Irish sea but mostly dying out before they get much inland. Dewpoint is 0.2C so whatever showers fell as would be sleet or wet snow.

Cloud starting to feed in from the north by west. Currently 2.9C with a slight breeze. It probably won't fall much more than that here.

The starting temperature wasn't that cold over this side... even then between 9 and 3pm it only rose 3C so it wasn't spectacular by any means

High today was 6.4C, no frost to melt and in the clear sunny, calm conditions it felt actually very pleasant. The forecast is calling for at least a build up of cloud here tonight so temperatures may not fall too far, plus there is a slight seaward breeze. I wonder if there will be any showers later maybe. It's probably a little early in this cold spell for any frost/ice/snow interest on the coast but its definitely coming!

Long time since I posted in here, its getting colder now.. I recorded 0.5C this morning (now 2C) which makes it the coldest night of the season so far. No real frost either. But that will change, I imagine, during this week. Nice sunrise though this morning!

Broad beans are extremely tolerant of low temperatures and will laugh at the temperatures forecast. Also Broad beans have one of the lowest seed germination temperatures requirements in the plant Kingdom, only needing 3-4degC to germinate. I have a Citrus plant planted out with fruit that is almost ripened so I'm concerned about that a bit but I can still use the fruit if it drops due to cold.

nice little storm passing to the north.. not overhead but still, I've seen the first storm of 2022. Saw spider lightning too. It's all a bit Mediterranean this, a dry summer followed by a wet, thundery start to Meteorological Autumn

Saw some large flashes of lightning over Wales before.. no doubt orographically forced by the Carneddau and Glyderau range, I even heard some distant thunder too but that's all stopped now. I'd be extremely surprised if any storms kicked off here, most of the rainfall radar lightning strikes have died out east of the Welsh border.

This might be a sign our climate type is going down the Macaronesian route.. Generally warm and dry with little rain in the south. Interestingly I've done quite a bit of personal research with regard to endemic Macaronesian species,, and they match closest to our native species in many respects. That would be a sign that our climates would be fairly similar if runaway climate change was to occur. A big example of this is the species Arbutus which is native relic of Ireland which shows us that Britain once had a Laurisilva like eco system.. Fascinating.

The foehn wind is still jacking up the temperatures, back up to 33C now.

I think we're getting a foehn here, the temperature has gone into freefall from 36C obviously but it's settled out at 32C, theres a really strong southwesterly wind, and the temperature is not really falling as fast now (in fact it's slowly rising again). This is a textbook example of some type of foehn, given cloud is increasing over N Wales.
