I was in South Cheshire at the time but don't particularly remember this gale. Highest windspeed (100mph) was near Caernarfon, so the N Wales mountains may have protected us from the worst of the wind.

Weather-history I was in Surrey at the time and whilst I don't remember this snowfall, I do remember the unexpected snow two weeks later on 5th April 1989 when I was caught out on Kingswood golf course whilst trying out a group walk, and the resulting and totally unexpected whiteout was a bit scary, despite my proximity to the village. Definitely the heaviest April snowfall I've seen and I must have smiled when we safely negotiated the golf course a few weeks later on the actual walk. No such problems today, just steady rain which, hopefully, will clear away this afternoon.

“Second Beast From The East” 2018
A Face like Thunder replied to Summer18's topic in Historic Weather
damianslaw late March 2013 saw a disaster in the N Wales hills with the loss of many sheep and lambs due to snowfall. I was in Chester Sat 23rd and the snow was thick on the ground in the city. Remarkably there was no snow in Crewe. -
Worryingly Wet & Worryingly Sunless
A Face like Thunder replied to SunSean's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
raz.org.rain it's called selling newspapers and advertising space. At the same time as a mini-heatwave is forecast, someone else will be forecasting the 'exact spots in England where a wall of snow will fall'. Don't bother with these headlines I say. -
Our day out yesterday had some great weather but proved ultimately fruitless in view of an unfortunate muddle in dates. Today has started off well again but some cloud bubbling up in an otherwise blue sky. Still very mild though and likely to continue that way for 2-3 days before a chilly Northerly moves in for the weekend.

Worryingly Wet & Worryingly Sunless
A Face like Thunder replied to SunSean's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
According to the Countryfile forecast, we've got some levelling up ahead this week, the wet SE starting to dry out and the rain falling mainly in the North and West. -
I sometimes hear the unmistakable two-tone whistle of Sir Nigel Gresley down in the yard at Crewe station whilst I'm walking the neighbour's dog about a mile away.. Lovely! A dry afternoon but a lot of cloud and very mild. A mixed week ahead according to the forecast on Countryfile tonight. Some rain midweek and then turning colder towards the end of the week as the dreaded NW's set in.

Easter Sunday, 30th March 1975. It was snowing (as has happened all weekend) as the evening service at our local church in Surrey came to an end, when suddenly there was a brilliant flash of lightning followed by an instantaneous crash of thunder and all the lights in the church went out. We didn't know whether to laugh or fall on our knees and beg forgiveness for our many sins! -
iand61 we've had a static caravan on the East coast for over 20 years and love it. Do take note of the site management and the general feel of the place; also the facilities in the caravan of your choice. There can be nothing worse than owning a caravan on a badly-run site with limited facilities in your caravan, although, thankfully, we've not experienced this ourselves. An interesting Panorama programme recently on a mobile home site at Wyre, near Blackpool and near where I lived. Potential owners were assured that they could class their purchases as main homes and live there all the year round, but the reality was very different, with the site classed as holiday homes for occupancy for 11 month of the year only, and considerable amounts of money being lost as a result. Today has started bright but signs of it clouding over now before the rain arrives this afternoon.

Whoa! Monsoon shower at 1pm and fortunately indoors at the time. A front moving through perhaps? A bit surprised as it was quite bright an hour earlier. Looking at the clouds, I think we've got more showers to come before they are forecast to move away to leave a cold night and a better day tomorrow.

Snow of Sunday 15th March 1964
A Face like Thunder replied to A Face like Thunder's topic in Historic Weather
60 years ago today, and made all the more remarkable by the fact that the snowfall followed 48 hours after the warmest day of the year thus far (57F) and less than 24 hours after the highest minimum temperature (45.9F). Over an inch of precipitation fell that day and whilst much of it might have been rain in Central London, it certainly wasn't in the North Downs area of Surrey as this photo, taken on the morning of 16th March, shows (London stats: Brazell). -
How hot could it possibly get in September?
A Face like Thunder replied to CryoraptorA303's topic in Storms & Severe Weather
I remember the 2016 heatwave well from when were staying in Hampshire. It all ended in a mighty big bang which I think would happen again with similar September temperatures in the future. -
Late January-early February 1954 freeze
A Face like Thunder replied to Weather-history's topic in Historic Weather
London stats show a maximum temperature of 27.5F on 28th Jan and 27.7F on 1st Feb. The start of arguably the most dismal year in the 2nd half of the 20th century, with Jan to Sept mean temperatures (bar March) all below average (Brazell)
