I thought August 2020 was a poor month. I live in Scotland and aside from the first week it was almost consistently cool and wet day after day. The first week was quite pleasant and warm. There was that brief heatwave on the 12th which brought an absolutely brilliant thunderstorm but from then on with was awful. I do think the south had a pleasant month however.

Summer 2010 was not a bad summer IMO. I live in Scotland and the June that year was absolutely brilliant. Plenty of warm sunny days without it getting too hot or wet. July despite all the rainfall wasn’t cold and there were several really warm days between the rain. August 2010 was actually a very pleasant month here. It was cool especially at night but there was plenty of sunny days and the rainfall was actually below average.

June: To have quite a unremarkable beginning some warm, dry days but also some showery and cooler weather. A very hot spell midmonth with some record breaking heat in Scotland. The 16th being the hottest day with temperatures widely above 30.C. (Hottest around 34.C in the south east and a few parts of Scotland). There will then be a thundery breakdown but only in the west while the east cools down but still stays pleasant. The end of the month being like the start. Quite a wet month in the west but warm and dry in the east. July: Dry and sunny in most areas. A unremarkable month in terms of temperatures. However with a lot of cool nights countrywide. Minima widely below 10.C on many days throughout the month while maximum temperatures are around average. There will be one very wet spell (the only of the month) 19th-23rd. While the rest of the month stays pleasant albeit not very warm. First July since 2011 not to hit 30.C highest maximum around 27/28.C on the second week. Several air frosts recorded in the north and sheltered southern areas. August: A cool, wet first week, followed by a two week long countrywide heatwave before a very cool and wet end. Some heavy rain brings flooding around the 4th with the north of England bearing the brunt. High pressure takes over from the 7th-22nd bringing very warm and sunny weather to all areas with very little rain. Maximums consistently in the mid-high 20’s in Scotland/northern England with the odd 30.C day. While there are several 35.C days in the south. There’s a massive countrywide thunderstorm on the 24th bringing an end to the heatwave while the final week is absolutely miserable. Heavy rain and temperatures struggling to get above 14.C. This will then give way to a warm and sunny September. Overall not a bad summer but not consistently glorious either. One of the better summers in the north however.

I can remember my primary school shutting once in either 2005 or 2006 in snowy weather but that was due to a broken heating system rather than the weather. It maybe shut a couple of times before but that’s the only occasion I can remember. High school I remember it closing in January 2009 due to yet another heating system issue. It closed for a few days in December 2009 and two days in January 2010 due to the snow and really low temperatures. It was about -18.C in my area one morning in January 2010. The best was the end of November 2010 where the school was shut for two weeks due to the snow levels. We had about 50cm of snow and the school was up the top of a steep hill which meant the snow plough really struggled to get near it. Eventually it did stop snowing for a few days in December 2010 for it to finally clear. Those are the only times I remember schools being closed when I was there. I think they closed in January 2013 due to the snow for a day and for three days in March 2018 as well.

Easter 2008 I remember having some snow in Perth, and it being accompanied by a bitter NE wind. I can’t recall if it lay for long though. I think it did for a couple of days and melted quickly. Easter 2013 also had a couple of flurries as well in the morning but they didn’t last, Easter 2018 apparently had some sleet on Good Friday but I was away and missed it.

Was summer 2020 not pretty poor? Yes there was quite a lot of hot days but they seemed very localised. Certainly in Scotland where I am it was a poor summer. There was only a few brief spells of good weather from what I can remember, a few days at the start and end of June. A couple of days in mid July and the first week of August. The rest of the summer was pretty much always cool and wet. Maybe I found it especially bad after such a wonderful spring but I would rate summer 2020 almost as bad as 2012.

Seen this thread late and past halfway in April so I will start predicting the rest of the year from May. May: Fairly warm and sunny in all areas, dry in the north but wet in the south. A cool first week with some heavy rain and strong winds. A very hot spell from the 12th-17th with maxima widely in the high 20’s and potentially 30.C in a few areas with some record breaking warm nights. Followed by a brief colder spell between the 20th-23rd before a warm and sunny final week with temperatures around the high teens or low 20’s. June: A warm month in eastern areas but fairly average in the west a thundery month so rainfall very erratic, some places being very dry, others being very wet. A unremarkable start to the month with some dry, sunny days with some showery days mixed in and temperatures around the low 20’s in the east but slightly cooler further west. A plume develops midmonth bringing some very hot weather to all areas with some record breaking heat in Scotland. Followed by a thundery breakdown with some flash flooding in northern England and Scotland. The final week being like the start very average. July: A dry, sunny and very anticyclonic month with average temperatues (maximum above average, minimum below average) dry everywhere with the driest weather in Wales and north west England. Two cool spells from the 15th-20th and 28-31st with some very cold nights and cool days but still Sunny and dry. The rest of the month having warm sunny days but also cool nights. August: A cool start followed by a two week heatwave before a very wet, cool autumnal last week. A wet but warm month. Heatwave from the 7th-22nd bringing maximum temperatures of the high 20’s/low 30’s in the north and mid to high 30’s in the south. Potential temperature records broken once again. A massive countrywide thunderstorm on the 24th bringing some very high rainfall and flash flooding in a few areas before an extremely cool and wet end to a relatively good summer. September: Cool first few days before high pressure builds bringing spell from the 5th-16th of warm autumnal sunshine temperatures around the low-mid 20’s with only real warm weather in the far south east. First autumnal storm on the 20th with some strong winds but little rain and a very anticyclonic last week with some frosty nights in the north and cool days. A dry month. October: Very cold first week but also one of the sunniest October weeks with some very sharp frosts country wide. Before a milder, wetter spell with some heavy rain and strong winds. High pressure builds from the 20th bringing a calmer end with temperatures around or slightly below average. November: A generally mild month with cloudy days but with little rain. A cold front moves in on the 17th bringing some snow showers in the north with some very heavy snow from the 23rd-27th followed by a Scandinavian high bringing sub zero temperatures but also beautiful crisp sunshine. Potentially temperatures as low as -20.C. December: A very cold start and finish with some very severe freezing fog. A very mild and dull spell in between similar to December 2015 with Scotland, northern England And Wales getting most of the rain.

For myself I would say the coldest part of winter is usually late January/early February. December isn’t usually overly cold although there is cold snaps but aside from 2009/2010 I can’t recall any other Decembers with any significant snow that’s lasted more than a couple of days I would even say March is snowier than December. Recently the years where I’ve recorded the most snow is around late January. I would say generally February is the Frostiest and calmest winter month however due to the days getting considerably longer there can be quite mild days like 2019 where I recorded freezing temperatures but also 15.C come the afternoon.

For me I remember December 2015 for its exceptional rainfall rather than it’s mildness. Don’t get me wrong it was very mild nonetheless. I had an average high in my area of 9.7.C when the average is 6.8.C and a minimum of 4.3.C when the minimum is -0.2.C. Both 1988 and even 2016 were milder in my area. I think the general mild, or even warmness was more concentrated to England and Wales rather than Scotland. We did have a few cold spells. I remember we started the month with quite a bit of snow which rapidly disappeared by the 4th and the 5th was a deluge with unbelievable heavy rain all day. We had a brief respite on the 6th and from then on it was mild and wet. We had quite a cold snap albeit brief between the 11th-13th where it got down to -6.C and gave a respite from the rain, it soon returned and the temperatures shot up. The 19th was the warmest day in my area that month giving a high of 15.4.C which I believe is a record. But despite that it remained misty, windy and damp. We had another very brief cool and dry snap just after Christmas before another deluge on the 30th which then let on into January 2016.

Think this was more localised to the south. I remember a few light, snow showers but nothing exceptional although we had already a foot of snow in my area to that point. Think the main snow event was late November.

What a spell of weather it was despite it not lasting as long as down south. I remember being on a residential outdoor activities trip with the school in the Scottish highlands when it took place it wasn’t as good as down south however. One thing that stuck out was how mild and humid it was at night. I remember it being only 15.C overnight one night which in the highlands in September is almost unthinkable it was 18.C overnight at Altnaharra at some point as well. The highest my station in Perth recorded was 25.6.C on the 30th which was also the warmest day of the year. Think it got to 24.C up at Dalguise where I was. Phenomenal spell and amazingly good weather for outdoor activities especially for the highlands. Unfortunately the 1st October brought a rapid change with heavy rain and a much cooler feel.

Probably the worst winter from memory imo. In my area it was very wet but we had absolutely no issues with flooding. December was extremely stormy and mild with a few brief spells of cold weather and a snow shower on Christmas Eve but nothing special. January actually wasn’t overly wet in my area I recorded 137% of average of rainfall that month but like December it was consistently mild and dull. A snowy day on the 11th but that was it. February was consistently mild and wet as well with very little sunshine. A forgettable season. Winter 2015-16 was a lot better we had some heavy snow right at the start of December before flooding just days later before a very brief cold snap before a return of severe flooding and rain in January. January 2016 was also a snowy month in my area I recorded 8 days of lying snow. February had some wet weather at the start but it was a generally cold and frosty month.

Perth Scotland Overall September was a dry and sunny month it being both the driest and sunniest for 5 years. Temperatures were near normal but with a warm first half and a cool second half with the coldest September night in my records of 20 years and apparently the coldest locally in at least 50 years. The warmest day was also the highest in four years. Stats: Mean maximum: 16.9.C (+0.3.C) Mean minimum: 8.1.C (-0.6.C) Mean: 12.5.C (-0.2.C) Rainfall: 41mm (57%) Sunshine: 159 hours (130%) Rain Days: 16 (-1) Extremes Highest maximum: 22.8.C (18th) Highest minimum: 14.3.C (3rd) Lowest maximum: 12.7.C (27th) Lowest minimum: -2.2.C (27th)

I can remember October 2008 at the end being noticeably cold but I can’t recall any snow in my area. October 2012 was noticeably cold throughout after a mild first week. I remember it being noticeably windy throughout felt like January most the time. The last week there was some very cold days and frost and we had a brief snow shower on the 26th I think. Most recently both October 2018 and 2019 had northerly spells where it was very cold especially at night. We had one day in 2018 it got down to -5.C and the maximum was only 4.C. 2019 had something similar.

North west highlands are extremely wet. 14 days of rain in a row seems very typical. Most parts of the north west highlands receive over 100 inches of rain a year. Glasgow which is the wettest City in the UK receive half of that.

Great point. I live in Scotland and I would say August is a worse month than September. Albeit September is cooler but it’s generally drier than August and there’s more settled weather. The only September’s that I’d say have been poor in the last 20 years were 2000 and 2017 whereas most August’s have been dire.

Looking back at previous data and memory. 2019: Average temepratues but dry and sunny, very warm spell 20/21st. 2018: Unsettled but an average month stormy spell 18th-21st noticeably chilly end. 2017: Wet, stormy, slightly duller and cooler than average first September not to reach 20.C. 2016: Very warm but quite dull very good warm spell 9th-14th, 25.C reached on the 13th with a low of just 15.C nine days exceeded 20.C. 2015: Very dry and sunny, some very cool nights throughout the month. Very warm at the end with 23.C being reached. 2014: Extremely Dry, warm but also dull a rather foggy month. Very little cool weather. 2013: Dry but unremarkable, cool spell midmonth maximum of only 10.C on the 16th. 2012: Very dry and rather sunny although very cool, -2.C was recorded on the 23rd, lowest September low in my area on record. 2011: Warm but unremarkable beside a record breaking spell right at the end with the warmest day of the year on the 30th. (25.6.C) 2010: Average but dry, unremarkable 2009: Warm but unsettled, some wet weather in the second half. 2008: An average month but with some strong winds. 2007: Very dry and sunny, very warm in the first 10 days but noticeably cooler in the second half. 2006: Extremely warm, 26.C reached on the 21st, dry and sunny as well. 2005: Warm, dry and sunny, wet last week. 2004: Dry but unremarkable 2003: Very dry and sunny with plenty of warm days in the first half, cooler, unsettled second half. 2002: Extremely dry and quite warm with average sunshine. 2001: Cool 2000: Extremely wet and noticeably cool. All in all my data has recorded many dry and settled Septembers with very little extreme weather. Aside from 2000 no September has been very wet.

Perth, Scotland Very dull and wet August continued the run of very unsettled, cool and dull of recent August’s in spite of a very promising first 10 days where it was warm, dry and sunny for the most part. A massive thunderstorm overnight 11th/12th brought 60mm of rain and flooded many areas in Perth despite this the 12th was the warmest day of the month and most likely be the warmest day of the year. The second half was abysmal with plenty of dull, wet weather and very cool in the closing days. It was the coolest August since 2017 and dullest since 2011 inspite of nearly double the average rainfall it wasn’t as wet as 2019. Stats Mean maximum: 18.8.C (-0.8.C) Mean minimum: 11.3.C (+0.5.C) Mean: 15.1.C (-0.3.C) Rainfall: 143mm (193%) Sunshine: 123 hours (75%) Extremes Highest maximum: 26.8.C (12th) Highest minimum: 15.7.C (12th) Lowest maximum: 13.5.C (25th) Lowest minimum: 4.6.C (30th) Wettest day: 11/12th (59.7mm) Sunniest day: 8th (13.6 hours)

Perth, Scotland It was both the coolest and wettest July since 2015 in my area despite this sunshine was only a little below average. An unsettled month with plenty of showers despite this some very pleasant weather in between albeit being a little bit cool. There was a lot of chilly nights throughout the month and minimum temperatures were at their lowest since 2011. There was no warm weather until the last day. I can remember that heatwave well. It was very disappointing for me. The highest I reached was 25.6.C on the 30th June. What was more frustrating it was 22.C at 11pm, think the minimum was about 17.2.C. The maximum in the 1st was only 23.3.C as well. Think it was a South easterly plume from what I can remember. Pretty sure the highlands reached 30.C on the 1st.

30 days above 25.C to be a good summer, I think I’ll move down the south east then. I’m lucky to reach 25.C three times a year.

It’s hard to tell because I don’t get sunshine totals till the month end but I wouldn’t say July has been overly dull in my area. We’ve had some dull days but many days have been sunny. Think only about 5 or 6 days have been completely sunless.

Estimation for autumn 2020 September to start off cool and unsettled before a phenomenal heatwave midmonth. Temperature records broken in a few areas, before a massive thundery breakdown with hail and flooding in some areas before a settled but cooler last week. Overall a very wet but warm month with near average sunshine. October to begin with a northerly blast bringing some unusually cool weather to most areas except the far south with some snow in the mountains and severe frost in Scotland before a much milder spell midmonth with some heavy rain in a few areas and to finish with some mild, sunny days. A unremarkable month for statistics. November will be a predominantly stormy, mild month with well above average rainfall in all areas and little frost until the last week with a very big northerly blast bringing heavy, disruptive snow and ice.

July was very wet in the north but was drier further south whereas August was very wet in the south and extremely wet on the south coast but it was quite dry in the north.

April 2015 was a fantastic month, warm by day but cold at night it was my sunniest April on record and even 2007 and 2011 haven’t came close to beating it. The May that followed was abysmal.
