  1. damianslaw 2010 was a pretty reasonable summer for me too. A very pleasant and warm June and believe it or not I had quite a dry and sunny August it was just cool. July was disappointing that year though.
  2. Another summer topic, and another one that seemed very different area to area. It gets quite a bad rep summer 2009 but I have quite a lot of good memories from it. June started very warm and sunny coming off the back of a very warm end to May. It didn’t last long though and by the 5th the weather had drastically changed to a cold and wet pattern. From about the 11th the weather did improve again but it remained quite unsettled until the 22nd however unlike other unsettled Junes there wasn’t much rainfall. The final week of June brought some very warm, dry and sunny weather again and this lasted well until the first week in July, from the 22nd-5th the temperature exceeded 22.C every day. The highest temperature was on the 30th with a maximum of 27.3.C bringing the warmest June day since 2003. The month ended up being slightly warmer, drier and sunnier. July began exactly the same as June started and finished with a peak of the heat arriving on the 2nd with a maximum of 29.4.C this made it the highest temperature of 2009, also the hottest July day since 2006 and there wasn’t a higher temperature until July 2013. It remained warm and sunny until the 5th and then the weather turned more unsettled and rainy. However I still have very good memories of July 2009 despite the rainfall and thunderstorms. The difference being unlike other wet summer months where the rain has been light and the weather has generally been dull and cool. July 2009 was still pretty sunny and wasn’t cool on many days I recorded a very respectable maxima of 20.5.C and sunshine was slightly above average. I remember many days starting very sunny and dry, followed by a late afternoon thunderstorm or downpour that lasted an hour before the weather cleared up leaving a warm and sunny evening. There was a brief spell from the 15th-20th where it was cool, dull and wet. July 2009 was actually the third sunniest July of the 2000’s for me and the Julys of 2002, 2007 and 2008 were significantly wetter. August followed by being quite a disappointing month but it wasn’t anywhere near as bad as 2008. The month started quite cool and unsettled before turning more settled and sunny with some warm days. The second half turned more unsettled but still quite warm before it turned cool again. The final days saw a marked improvement and the September that followed was quite a pleasant month. Looking at met office stats I believe summer 2009 was a absolute abysmal summer in the west, particularly for Wales, north west England and south west Scotland but across the south east it looks to be slightly drier and sunnier than average and across northern Scotland while still being wet it looks to be one of the sunniest summers there on record. Whats your memories on that season?
  3. Sun Chaser I think summer 2017 was a rather poor summer overall. June was dreadful we missed out on the heatwave the best I could do was three days off warm sunshine and dry weather and even then the maximum temperature never rose above 25.C. Either side of that the weather was cold, wet and windy. In fact June 2017 is my wettest June on record for nearly 30 years and in Edinburgh it was the wettest June in over 100 years. July wasn’t overly bad but it was generally cool, strangely though we had most the bad weather in the first half whereas the second half was actually quite pleasant with a few warm days. August was dire the highest maximum I recorded was only 22.4.C and it was generally dull and wet although nowhere near as bad as June. Even the September that followed was also poor.
  4. It was a cracking spell of weather and did make lockdown slightly bearable. I don’t recall much in March 2020 though, it was pretty average I think there was a spell of mild, sunny weather literally just before lockdown but other than that it was a typical March. April 2020 was a brilliant month, warm, sunny and dry with only the odd showery and cooler day. It was the sunniest April on record locally for me but then that was beat by April 2021. While April 2020 was warm there wasn’t any exceptionally or prolonged heat for me, I didn’t even hit 20.C but most days were around 17-18.C so it was glorious. May 2020 was another fantastic month although I do think May 2018 was slightly better, there was a good warm spell in the first week but there was a northerly blast just after which did bring some notably cold weather for a few days, after the 18th though the weather was generally very warm, dry and sunny with many days getting into the low 20’s, reaching 25.C on a few days towards then end of the month. Definitely the best spring I can remember, will probably not see another one like it for some time.
  5. Billy Hicks I rate 2010 as a pretty decent summer as well. The June was was brilliant, July while wet wasn’t dull nor was it cold it was just unsettled. Scotland actually had a pretty decent August in 2010 too. It was sunny and mostly dry but cool, very cool nights at times. August 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2020 was by far a lot worse.
  6. Weather Enthusiast91 Further south did seem to have a reasonable second half of July and August in 2012 to make the summer less poor. We missed out on the heatwave in July and while August was a vast improvement it was still quite wet and not overly warm or sunny.
  7. B87 how do you make a climate graph like that?
  8. What is everyone’s memories on this topsy turvy season? The March of 2012 was absolutely glorious, very warm, dry and sunny. The mean maximum of 13.3.C was especially high around 4.C above average. The month was also very dry only 18% of average rainfall and sunny although 2022 was much sunnier. A glorious month throughout, even before the March heatwave it was often very mild, dry and sunny with high maxima, many days reached the mid teens, and with very crisp and sunny mornings it was perfect early spring weather. The only spell I can remember where it was unsettled was just before the heatwave, come the 24th the weather changed drastically to becoming unseasonably warm, reaching a new March record for me of 21.7.C on the 27th. From the 25th-30th the maximum temperature exceeded 20.C and was probably the first time on record that my area exceeded 20.C during March. 10/10 month for the weather. April 2012 completely flipped the script with it being unseasonably cool (maximum of just 10.1.C, 3.2.C colder than March) and wet. It was the wettest April recorded for me although 1998 and 2000 did come close. The highest it reached all month was just 16.2.C and that was on the 1st. Come the 4th there was 7cm of snow and a maximum of just 2.9.C. After such a warm month this was a massive shock and change, the month never recovered after the snowfall with it being often cool and wet with the odd brighter interlude, the highest temperature after the 4th was just 14.8.C on the 8th. The only saving grace about April was it wasn’t overly dull but it was still the dullest April since 2004. The east coast of Scotland had one of its dullest April’s on record I think. The only settled weather came towards the months close. May 2012 was a turbulent month to say the least, the opening days did provide a little bit of respite with a couple of days reaching the high teens with some sunshine but after the 5th it collapsed and it was back to where April was but this time it was almost consistently wet and dull with temperatures failing to reach even 10.C on a few days, on the 11th the maximum of just 7.4.C and the 13th it was only 9.1.C. It was an awful spell of weather, reminded me a bit of May 2021 and had it not been for the heatwave it would’ve probably ended up worse. The saving grace was a glorious spell of weather that started on the 20th. From the 22nd-28th for me the temperature exceeded 22.C everyday peaking at a high of 26.2.C on the 26th. However it still remained foggy and cold on the east coast which I thankfully just missed but it was noticeably colder just 10 miles further east. The month ended again rather cool and unsettled. Overall spring 2012 ended up pretty much bang average for rainfall, temperature and sunshine but with some massive contracts of weather throughout. share your memories and stats
  9. SummerShower I agree with you about 2013. It was my driest summer on record but in terms of sunshine it was pretty much bang average. July was very sunny but 2006, 2014, 2018, 2021 and 2022 were all sunnier for me. June was average but August was quite dull. June actually had my lowest minima since 1999 and there hasn’t been a June with cooler minima since. Nonetheless it was still a very good summer. June was quite pleasant with most days being partly cloudy and even August despite being dull was often quite warm and rarely rained. Had it not been for that spell in July I would say it would’ve been a bang average summer. I think East Anglia even in July was still quite cool sometimes.
  10. Summer8906 July 2000 was one of the driest Julys on record in Scotland. I think western Scotland fared very well with sunshine as well. It was slightly duller than average for me but until July 2005 it was the driest July since probably the 70’s.
  11. SummerShower I remember the second half of July 2000 being very pleasant and at times very warm particularly in the last week. The first half was very cool and dull but at least for Scotland it was very dry. I think western Scotland fared very well during July 2000 as I believe it was one of the sunniest Julys on record in Glasgow, similar to July 2011 where western Scotland had one of its sunniest Julys.
  12. LetItSnow! Yeah you are right. August 2020 for me had lower than average maximum temperatures (18.7.C compared to a usual of 19.5.C). The only heat we had all the summer was the first two days of June, about five days towards the end of the June, one day in July and then a week in August. Even by Scottish standards that is really bad. The June heatwave had a maximum of 25.8.C on the 27th. July 31st reached 26.0.C and August 12th reached 26.7.C. Even on July 31st the weather was quite cloudy and it was a very windy day so it didn’t even feel very warm. Definitely a very poor summer for Scotland 2020. That second half of August is probably the worst spell of summer weather I can ever remember.
  13. Sun Chaser Intresting to know Plymouth had a poor summer that year as well.
  14. Addicks Fan 1981 I remember it being a pleasant month but without the heat it kind of reminded me of late spring. I think it was only northern Scotland where it was a really poor month. It turned into one of the best autumns I’ve ever had as well, both September and October 2007 were both very dry and sunny with pleasantly mild days. 2007 actually wasn’t a too bad year weather wise. I think the highest I reached that month was 24.7.C on the 24th which was the highest temperature of the year. 2007 actually does hold the lowest maximum temperature I’ve recorded although 2008 was close as well.
  15. Billy Hicks I do believe that 2007 was definitely worse in the south and that 2012 was worse in the north. 2007 for me at least for me I had a July that wasn’t exceptionally dull or wet and the August that year was pretty good but on the cool side. 2012 however was just awful, we missed out on the heat of the end of July and even August while it wasn’t a write off of a month it was just bang average. 2012 did have like you say the March heatwave and also a good week in May where it was warm and sunny and the September that followed while cool was often sunny and dry.
  16. Metwatch Metwatch 2021 was definitely a brilliant summer in the north. It never broke any records for heat for me, nor was it exceptionally dry or sunny. I feel like it was just a consistently good summer. We had a very pleasant June (plenty of 20-22.C days with lots of sunshine and little rain). No extreme heat, the highest maximum was only 24.6.C but yet the lowest maximum was 16.1.C which was very high for me. July had an excellent first three weeks but again like June there wasn’t any prolonged heat until midmonth, the warmest July reached was 27.3.C which is slightly above average but again the lowest maximum was 17.6.C which is also very high for July. (We usually have a few days where it’ll fail to reach 15.C). August turned a little bit more unsettled particularly in the first half but after the 17th. The weather here was absolutely glorious and from the 22nd-29th it was pretty much unbroken sunshine once early morning mist and fog burned off. Again for August the highest maximum was 26.2.C but the lowest maximum was 16.8.C. So again nothing below 15.C. 2021 was consistently settled and warm aside from the last week of July and first half of August. It was similar to 2022 in terms of stats but summer 2022 had hotter spells of weather and also had a few more cooler and unsettled periods in July.
  17. Daniel* My average August maximum is 19.5.C having a maximum of 23.5.C sounds amazing. I think I would be more than happy with a poor summer in the London area.
  18. Weather Enthusiast91 I think the only reason summer 2013 is talked about so highly as it was the first summer since 2006 where it was warm for any prolonged time. June 2013 had the lowest minima for me since 1999 and I didn’t reach 23.C that month. It was nonetheless a pleasant month with little rain and reasonable sunshine. July was excellent (mean maxima of 23.0.C) but I do believe it wasn’t overly warm on the east coast particularly in Norfolk and east anglia. However July 2013 still had average rainfall (due to thunderstorms in the final week) and sunshine was only slightly above average the Julys of 2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022 all had much higher sunshine totals. August 2013 was actually my driest August on record, even drier than 2003, it was also the warmest August since 2004 but it was duller than average. I would say summer 2013 while it was a very good summer (it was my driest summer since 2003 and I haven’t had a drier one since) it definitely wasn’t in the same league as 2003, 2006, 2018, 2021 and 2022.
  19. Weather-history Summer 2019 was definitely a summer that was different depending on where you were.
  20. danm I’m based in Perth, even by Scotland standards summer 2020 was poor. The highest temperatures I recorded during the August heatwave was 26.7.C and that was the warmest day of 2020. In 25 years that is about average for the warmest day of the year. Even during the heat spike on the 31st. I only reached 26.C and that day was also cloudy and windy so I felt a good bit cooler.
  21. Sun Chaser Summer 1999 was a good summer. June wasn’t great but July and August were both pleasantly warm and September that year was very warm. 2005 had it not had been for a very dull and cool second half of July I would say it could’ve been on par with some of the best summers. I agree with August 2014. Northern Scotland bore the worst of that weather, it was about average for me but was quite cool, but not as bad as some Augusts. It had a excellent July and the June that year was good. I really enjoyed summer 2019. The downpours were very interesting but like you say they all fell in heavy bursts rather than prolonged rain. It had an excellent second half of June, (first half was terrible for me). July was generally warm, dry and sunny bar a few very heavy showers, the spell between the 22nd-27th was particularly warm. And even August minus the deluge between the 9th-11th was good. Summer 2021 is definitely controversial as it was a poor summer in the south east but across the north and west it was an excellent summer. I loved summer 2021 especially as it was consistently warm throughout rather than having excessive heat. For example I only recorded one day that whole season where the maximum failed to exceed 16.C but yet there was 49 days that exceeded 20.C but only 10 days exceeded 25.C. (Still a lot by local standards here). There was also only a few days with rain and that came in heavy bursts that lasted only a few hours. It was a pleasantly warm summer with little nighttime humidity or stifling hot days. 2020 is definitely overrated for me and if anything I would say it was probably the worst summer since 2012. Aside from the first couple of days and last week in June and the first week in August there was very little heat. It was just cold, wet and miserable. The first half of July and second half of August were absolutely terrible, many days reached just the low or mid teens and the rain was very heavy. The thunderstorm overnight 11th-12th August was very interesting however and that was probably the loudest and longest thunderstorm I have ever experienced in this country. Summer 2013 while a brilliant summer for most of the UK was probably a little bit disappointing on the east coast after that very cold spring with the sea temperatures being below average. Definitely a good topic to compare as the UK is so different weather wise year by year.
  22. Addicks Fan 1981 August 2007 was actually quite pleasant from memory although I remember it being quite cool for most the month. I actually recorded average sunshine during July 2007 but it was a lot wetter than average, although there has been much wetter Julys locally to me. June 2007 was the worst summer month for me that year, it was by far the dullest June I have recorded (only 74 hours of sunshine). I still think summer 2012 was worse for me however. Autumn 2007 was brilliant, the first two weeks of September was like summer with temperatures in the low 20’s and sunshine but also with the cool nights. It did turn cooler towards the months end, my favourite combination in autumn it . October followed the same script as the days were pleasantly mild but it was often cold at night with minima close to freezing on many nights. It was also very dry from memory, it was almost like spring instead of autumn. November turned a little bit more unsettled and more autumnal but to be expected by then.
  23. What summers do you feel have been good but have been put down for being poor or average? For me I would say 2005 - A summer that was good for me but never broke any records for outstanding heat or warmth. Summer 2005 had a good first half of June, an excellent first half of July and a largely fine August. In fact July 2005 is the driest July I have recorded and it is probably the driest July since the 1970’s for my area. It was let down by a very dull and cool second half of July, and a cool first half of June. 2009 - (very controversial) I had a cracking June. Especially the final week with maximum temperatures consistently reaching the mid 20’s on many days. July actually had quite a lot of warm, sunny weather but was let down massively due to the near enough daily afternoon thunderstorms or huge monsoon like downpours. Either side of it though the weather was actually very pleasant. Many warm sunny evenings and pleasantly mild sunny mornings. It was let down mainly due to a wet August. 2010 - Had a very warm, dry and sunny June, probably one of the nicest Junes I’ve experienced. Very little wet weather, and the August that year while cool was actually quite pleasant. I believe August 2010 was terrible in the south but certainly for central Scotland it was a pleasant month with many cool nights. Made it feel like a late April/early May most of the time. It was let down due to a rather wet July. 2014 - Had my sunniest July on record even beating 2006, 2013, 2018 and 2021. A very pleasant July with lots of warm sunshine but without the usual humidity of summer. It actually had quite a lot of cool nights. June had a good week long heatwave in the middle of the month while being rather warm throughout. The August that year was quite disappointing however. 2019 - Had a brilliant second half of June, a generally warm and sunny July and a pleasantly sunny August. Let down by brief but generally very heavy spells of rain and dull weather throughout. First half of June was shockingly bad. 2021 - An excellent summer. A warm and sunny June with no exceptional heat, just very pleasant 20-22.C weather. A really good July and August, with the final week in August having some of the best summer weather I can remember very pleasantly warm without the humidity. The mornings always started cold and misty and then the sun came with vengeance by mid morning. share your thoughts
  24. I actually feel like summer 2019 was a good summer overall. Yes it was wetter than average but most of the rain came in short spells. The first half of June was wet and cool but the second half was very dry, warm and sunny. I do recall a very heavy thundery showers on the 29th and early hours into the 30th. July was generally dry and warm especially from the 16th-27th. August was very wet, (wettest since 2004 here) but the vast majority of the rain fell in three days between the 9th-11th. The rest of the month was actually quite pleasant and it was also the sunniest August since 2003. Summer 2007 was generally cool, wet and dull with only brief drier, warmer settled spells whereas summer 2019 was generally warm and settled with brief very wet and unsettled spells. Daniel* Summer 2021 was a cracking summer in Scotland. I would rate it better than 2003, 2006 and on par with 2013 and 2018. Summer 2022 was also a very good summer for us.
  25. Frigid definitely. You’re right because while it was a hot summer, it definitely wasn’t humid aside from a few days that July. That spell at the end of August was absolutely glorious I had pretty much unbroken sunshine from the 23rd-30th, aside from morning mist which occurred but that was all burnt off by 11am. Dundee usually gets plagued by the haar in the summer but it was absolutely glorious.
