  1. After weeks of below average temperatures and above average rainfall the sun has finally shown up and it has hit 30.2c here in North Lincs. Hardly a record though, considering we had 36c this time last year and a single day of hot weather does not make a 'heatwave'. The media hype about a heatwave is typical 'express' style gutter press nonsense. As I've just had to explain to our children, it feels hotter than normal simply because we've had no time to acclimatise to the temperature due to a prolonged cool period for last few months. Normally the temperature builds up over spring/early summer and after acclimatisation we would not rank this sort of heat as unusual, maybe just at the higher end of typical summer day temps. Our spring fed well and ground water levels are now well above normal so no problems with water shortages even if we had this sort of temp for the remainder of summer. Getting fed up of media hyping every single warm day as 'extreme heat' and evidence of climate change. I'm old enough to remember summers in my youth that far exceeded this in terms of warmth over sustained periods. Absolute joke to hype a single day of hot weather as a 'heatwave'.
  2. I think you have been 'lucky' in that the band of heavy rain has been further south than Leeds. We've had 5" of rain since Sunday morning here (near Barnetby Top) in North Lincs. It is still raining here, so that is nearly 60 hours almost continuous although a lot of that was light rain. We've had no flooding yet but the ground was pretty dry so will soak up quite a lot. Our spring fed well was actually really low last week, lowest I've seen it in years, water level was down about 4 feet compared to where it would normally be at this time of year. It has now risen about 2 feet in last few days but still lower than normal. I guess it would take another week or so of rain like this before the ground is saturated enough to start worrying about flooding here. Back in 2007 we had 4-6" of water sat across most of our garden but no signs of that happening again yet. However I'd like this rain to stop soon and to have a few days of warm sun. Don't think I've seen the sun since Saturday! attached is a picture of our garden from 25th June 2007, we are praying that we don't get a repeat of that! (the purple kids toy is floating around the garden)
  3. It has been raining almost non stop since sunday here, including torrential most of the day today but the worst thing is the cold. It has been quite breezy here which hasn't helped and max temp today was 12c, with no heating on in the house it is getting uncomfortably cool. Hope this isn't going to be another 2007! At this rate I'll need to light a fire soon.
  4. We've had rain pretty much every day for weeks, very changeable with lovely sunny spells lasting an hour or two then followed by heavy showers. It has been pretty cool too, a few nights last week drop down to 6c which is pretty cool for June. We had torrential rain this morning. Certainly no water shortage here. The lawn has grown phenomenally fast this last week, and the garden as a whole is looking lush and green, very different to this time last year.
  5. It has been a pretty cold week here. Max daytime temps of just 7c, nights getting as low as zero. Worst thing has been the relentless wind which seems to have been going on for ages, would be really warm in the sun if it wasn't for the cold breeze. Have been trying to spray paint some models in the garden and it has been a nightmare, not super windy but just enough of a gusty breeze to make spraying difficult and has been blowing dust everywhere too. Thankfully no rain in the last couple of days. Hoping for this wind go away next week. It feels like we are on the cusp of a change to a longer warm spell, maybe a repeat of last year?
  6. Bit of a strange weekend for weather (for early March). It was freezing overnight friday, only +3c at 7am yesterday morning (Saturday), then it stayed dry and got warmer as the day progressed and reached a heady +20c by 6pm! A very pleasant day indeed except for the gusty winds that arrived later in the evening after dark. It remained warm overnight into Sunday and was +10c at 7am this morning. However by lunchtime the wind got stronger, very gusty at times and temperature started to drop. It then started to rain and that remained for the rest of the afternoon., quite heavy at times too. We are now at 7pm Sunday and it is +10c outside. A considerable 20c difference between coldest and warmest temps recorded over the weekend. Common in Summer but not that common in early March, would normally expect no more than 12-15c difference in Tmin and Tmax here at this time of year.
  7. Is it just me being jinxed or does anybody else notice this, we often get gorgeous weather during the week when we're at work and then the weather is awful at the weekends when we're off work.
  8. Big change in weather today, only got up to 9c, has been grey and dismal all day.
  9. Got up to +16.7 here today, warm for time of year but not a record for my location. It was warmer here back in January 2014 when I spray painted my Land Rover outside. Night time temps still dropping to near freezing most nights and we have had a few frosts over the last week along with dense fog that has lasted through till late morning or even lunchtime. I find it very amusing when media says things like '16c warmer than this time last year = global warming', um, so when it is just +1c on the same day next year or the year after will they claim we are in global cooling?? I'll wager not. It is just weather and in the UK it can often throw up exceptional localised weather but go a few hundred miles either side and it can be totally the opposite. I wish the media would stop confusing weather with global climate, I have many friends in the States and they are suffering from exceptional cold or exceptional rain at the moment, a friend in North Carolina is very envious of our current weather as his normally much warmer climate is currently cold and wet! He has decided to move to Florida because North Carolina is getting too cold!!
  10. What a glorious morning! We had a light frost with temp dropping to zero overnight and still just +2c now at 8am but had no fog, sun is out and we have a lovely clear blue sky.
  11. We had a second day on a row that started with thick fog, cleared by late morning and then had nice sunny afternoon. Temp got up to max of 14.6c again (identical max to yesterday). Dropped back down to 6c here now. Very pleasant weather.
  12. Today started very foggy here (3rd day of fog this week), then a bit of light rain but by lunchtime it was bright and sunny. Only got to +14.6c, not exactly heatwave but still very pleasant. Evenings have been quite cold this week though and we even had to light a fire the other day as house had got a bit cold due to low overnight temps and heavy frost. I can't see us getting any proper cold weather now although looks like frosts may still be a threat to my wifes vegetable gardening for a while longer despite the warmer than average daytime temps.
  13. We've had a nice run of sunny days here but not seen daytime temps much higher than 12c, still getting down near freezing most nights. Also been a cool breeze blowing last few days. Was working outside most of the weekend cutting up timber and still needed a thick rigger shirt on because of that nippy breeze. Bit deceptive as it looked like t-shirt weather. At least we never got any rain though. My wife now starting off her seeds in the propagators so she doesn't want any more cold weather now, she's hoping to start planting out earlier this year, last year was a very late start and we had a poor set of crops. The only thing that did really well last year was the chilli plants, an amazing crop of them, freezer is full of the damn things and we have dozens of jars of pickled chillies too.
  14. Nice day today, sun out and managed to get upto +11c here. However mother nature still likes to remind us that we are still in winter, last few days have got very cold overnight, we had -2c here a couple of nights ago and even this morning the house was very cold, was only +2c at 9am. Had to de-ice the cars a couple of times the last week. Not exactly 'warm' as some have claimed in the model thread! I guess if you have a thermostatically controlled centrally heated modern home then you may not be fully aware of how cold it is outside overnight. Ours is a Victorian cottage and entirely heated by solid fuel that we have to physically walk to the bottom of the garden to collect (logs or anthracite). Overnight our house has minimal heating so we notice the cold nights more than a thermostatically controlled house. It has been flipping perishing cold some mornings over the last week. I think I'm getting old but will be happy to see spring arrive
  15. Hehe, yep, I think some people in the model thread need to moderate their use of 'mild' or 'warm' It has only just got up to +4.7c here and there is still frost on the grass and garden furniture in the shade. My definition of temperatures would be roughly: 'Hot' = I can work outside in shorts and no shirt 'warm' = I can work outside in shorts and a t-shirt 'mild' = I can work outside in jeans and a t-shirt 'cool' = I can just about drag myself outdoors as long as I have a thick jumper on and I'm not out there long (current situation) 'Cold' = I avoid working outside at all
  16. very hard frost here overnight, still -0.5c here and a lot of ice on the cars, my wife has just taken 20 mins to de-ice and de-mist her car, she is not impressed as I'd told her it was going to be mild this week...… oops...
  17. +6.8c, dark, dismal and raining here this morning YUK! Preferred it bright and cold, hopefully the wet spell won't last too long.
  18. I was just going through all our photos of the kids, house and Land Rovers taken since we moved into this house in North Lincs 18 years ago. I have made a note of all the months were we have a photo of laying snow on the ground (not necessarily falling in that month though). Snow may have fallen in months not listed here simply because we never took a photo but it sure looks like snow is becoming more common for us in our particular location. There appears to be a long period between 2003 and 2009 that we have hardly any photos showing snow, not sure if that was just down to us not taking photos or it really was a 'snow drought'? Dec 2002 Jan 2003 Nov 2005 Dec 2005 Mar 2006 Dec 2009 Jan 2010 Oct 2010 Nov 2010 Dec 2010 Jan 2011 Feb 2012 Dec 2012 Jan 2013 Feb 2013 Mar 2013 Jan 2015 Dec 2017 Jan 2018 Feb 2018 Mar 2018 Apr 2018 Are we just an exception due to being in a rural area next to a hill or has anybody else noticed this?
  19. We'll have to keep our eyes on this. December 2010 was roughly 18 months after the last solar minimum? Hopefully the Atlantic SST's will play ball While I'm still very optimistic of further snow this year, even as late as April, I think our next shot at a 2010 style winter will be Decembers of 2021 and 2022 (assuming this current minimum ends mid 2019 and SC25 is underway by end of this year). Curiously winter 2022/23 would be 60 years since the great cold/snow of 1962/63. This would be bang on the 60 year cooling/warming cycle that is seen in various temp records. (Won't the QBO be in an easterly phase by winter 2022 too?) Maybe you should move to the Wolds before then? make sure you maximise your snow chances? hell, you'll probably get faster and cheaper broadband too Do you still have to pay extortionate rates for KCOM? My daughter found she had to use her mobile phone mobile data connection for internet when she moved there because KCOM were stupidly expensive.
  20. A bit like this? :-) Can't find a later chart than 31st Dec 2018 but this one shows exactly what you mentioned, warm SST NE Canada/south of Greenland, below average across the mid north Atlantic. I think we need the Atlantic to cool a bit more so that it takes the energy out of the systems coming our way, I may be wrong but pretty sure with less energy they have less chance of pushing through across the UK, giving us more chance of remaining under an easterly on the east coast of UK and hence colder/higher snow risk?? I know it is a lot more complicated than that but every little helps eh? :-)
  21. temp dropping quite rapidly here, down to +2.7c now (was 4.7c only an hour ago). It has also gone grey and cloudy here. Those rain bands showing on the radar may start to turn to snow again once it goes dark. My wife informs me that the TV were forecasting snow for us between 6pm and 9pm?
  22. Quicksilver1989, shame you missed December 2010 That winter was epic, started snowing here shortly after Halloween I seem to recall, lawn went white and remained under snow until march following year. Had upto 24" depth of snow on lawn in mid December and a total winter snowfall of 50" here. Oddly though, it never snowed once during xmas week! I think xmas must be jinxed. Here is a pic to show you what you missed that December, 20" of snow over whole garden. Most of this was still there in January which is when I think our lowest temp ever recorded was -20c at 4am one morning. We added beer cans to show the depth to our friends in the south who didn't believe we'd had that much snow edit: we had to dig the trench to get to our log store at the bottom of the garden.
  23. Hull or any city for that matter is going to struggle simply due to UHI effect. We are only a few miles south of you but in a very rural location. It can be 5 degrees colder here than Hull (where our eldest lives) and snow/ice stays on the ground far longer. In fact in 2010 we had -18c on our home weather station while Hull was reporting just -10c, just shows how extreme the UHI effect can be in a cold winter. Only last week we had snow on the ground for several days. In March 2013 we had snow on the ground from 23rd to 28th. Agreed, it may not be that common that snow arrives in late March/April but it can happen and my point was that the solar minimum boosts the chances of it happening albeit by a small margin. I'm not sure many people want prolonged deep laying snow anyway. We like it on the odd day, especially if at weekends so the kids can sledge and build snowmen but my wife and I need to get to work so prolonged periods of laying snow cause us problems, especially as I'm self employed and only get paid when I am working. Because we grow our own vegetables we tend to pay closer attention to temps than many, especially in April/May when we may be planting seedlings out and we know from experience that snow/ice/frosts are more common in April than many would imagine. All it takes is one bad frost to wipe out a crop or two. It doesn't need weeks of sub zero temps. The ref to AMO was that I remember reading many years ago that in a negative phase of the AMO the cooler SST's result in less wet weather for the UK and there is less strength in the Atlantic systems as they move to the UK. In winter this can result in slightly cooler/drier spells, in summer warmer/drier summers. Is this not correct?
  24. Just been over to Scunthorpe, virtually no snow there at all and yet a few miles to the east on the back roads via South Ferriby down to Elsham there was an inch or so laying on the fields. It is all melting pretty fast now as temps are up to +4c, clear blue sky and a warm sun. Still, it counts as a snow day for me as we had a good few hours of laying snow and I got to engage 4WD on the Land Rover (albeit for just a mile)
