in 1968 saw the Mendip floods in the summer where seven people died and 175mm fell in Chew Stoke on one day, the year before also had a massive storm with golf ball sized hail

first rumbles of the day! loud as well!
-
-
constant rumbling coming from somewhere even tho the sky looks too bright for storms..., still had a two minute downpour which has left that classic earthy smell
-
32.C yet again here but a lot more cloud today, a little annoying I wont make a week over 30.C but here's hoping for some good storms

32.C here, fourth day in a row over 30.C
-

an exact carbon copy of yesterday, beautiful blue skies and 31.C again
-
up to 31.C today! maybe the first time its been hotter here than anywhere else? this is turning out to be a great august!

the Avon here in town is the lowest I've ever seen it, you can see the rocks at the bottom and all the fish, normally its too deep to see that, we need more than drizzle to change this!

As a heat hater I certainly have concerns for the future:
Average UK summer highest temperature 1960 - 1989 = 31.0C
Average UK summer highest temperature 2003 - 2022 = 34.3C
So a 1.1C global rise has produced a 3.3C rise in maximum temperatures here in the UK
Taking a 20 year average gets rid of minor variations. I think that is significant increase that isn't fully explained by global rises alone, there must have been some sort of climate shift. How long before we see 44-45C in the UK?
i was looking at the east coast states of America for comparison and most of their records from the 20th century still stand, it seems like the record breaking heatwaves are confined to this side of the Atlantic? or maybe we’ve been unlucky so far…

lovely breeze picking up as the front approaches, can see the clouds coming, still we got to 33.C here so another very hot day!
-
the date record today is 36.5 at Wisley and Epsom Downs (2006)
-
looking at the unofficial temps map two areas that could do with an official met station are Ely and Biggleswade, other than that though the hottest area is fairly well covered luckily

the daily record will be broken soon, 33.3 at Wisley in 2006
-
low of 13.C overnight
-
-
i think the record will be beaten tomorrow, ill go for 39.1 at Bedford, this plume will be incredible either way!
-
even though it seems crazy 40.C could happen here I wouldn’t be so surprised, nearby Belgium and the Netherlands passed it for the first time in 2019 that was a warning sign!

The heat on Tuesday morning is actually outrageous, I've never seen a model produce a 34c at 9z. For reference, the July 2019 heatwave was ONLY at 27-28c by that point....were the heat to be 6hrs slower leaving I'd guess it would have been another one of those crazy 41-42c type runs...
the night temperatures beforehand would surely beat the minimum high record of 23.9 at Brighton
What Did You Think of Summer 2022?

very good here, especially July and August with many 30.C+ days and lots of sun but the lack of any good storms stops it from being brilliant for me
