  1. I for one have been extremely disappointed in this cold spell. The Metoffice for a few days now have been banging on about heavy, frequent snow showers, drifting and heavy falls including issuing 5 warnings for snow until Wednesday. This morning, their updates are completely different (again) saying largely dry, with rain or sleet showers easing and winds falling light? Then rain on Wednesday. So what has changed in the last 12 hours. This is not a proper northerly - if it was, we would be getting pasted as we normally do with these set ups. I suspect the warnings will be cancelled this morning for parts of the country. Lost quite a lot of faith in their abilities this winter.
  2. GFS, very marginal away from high ground. Similar to last week, where with just a bit of elevation, there could be accumulating snow. Very little in the south and west.
  3. The uppers look like a wintery mix to me? No 'deep' cold (for now), so I would say it will be pretty standard away from the North. Cold nights though.
  4. Couldn't put it better myself! The output from the models show a *risk* of settling snow in the N/NE/NW and lowland snow away from here would be minimal (at present). However, the output has been very volatile so I would hesitate before celebrating! Detail will change over the coming days.
  5. A discussion on our radio with the Metoffice this morning highlighted the complexity in predicting our weather for a week period, never mind a season. They said that, generally, the UK has a westerly bias winter with, some, colder periods from time to time and we have seen this for decades. However, they also said that we can have 'freak' years - like 2010 or last year when the weather can vary and give us something different for longer periods. Interestingly, the Met said that despite things looking good for cold weather, like slower jet, Greater euro Asian snow cover etc.....This doesn't guarantee cold here and the Atlantic will always dominate our weather for the longer term. Anyway, he said he was pretty confident that February will be similar to the rest of the winter and he doesn't see any deep cold in the UK - but obviously this is just a prediction.
  6. Had a guy from the Meto on radio and he said the biggest hazard this week will be ice. Any snow will be insignificant away from highest elevation. Northern Ireland and sw Scotland could see 10cm,but most of England and Wales will be lucky to see anymore than 1-5cm through this week. At this stage, he said snow is not a major concern away from, maybe, northern Ireland. He also said there is a greater uncertainty surrounding the change to milder weather and when/ if this is going to happen. He also said that the south and south west/ East have the lowest risk of seeing settling snow.
  7. Might get some more snow tomorrow here. Looking marginal, but possible.
  8. Never updated it though as it hit earlier than the specified times. The council said they opened the schools as the met said it was not going to be a severe until later in the afternoon. Probably should have been an amber warning.
  9. Well, very little mentioned about the winds here today (90+ mph), plus the Met never even updated their warning for us. We have had major problems today no one can get off and on the islands, schools had to close, power off and structural damage and even public buildings closing. I would say the met is a poor service here. Some people have been stuck on fair isle and foula for days now.
  10. Yet again the wind is causing lots of problems up here. Power cuts, damage and service disruption and only a yellow alert.
  11. I think most of Shetland had the electric restored now.
  12. Moves through very quickly. As the worst winds move through England and Wales overnight, the impact will be less.
  13. It is interesting to note that a lot of people up here do not take note of the Metoffice as they are, more than often, wrong when predicting weather events. The icelandic Metoffice issues forecasts for Faroe and Shetland and these are quite often more accurate. In fact, I think the local media use the icelandic metoffice more often then not. The storm for tomorrow is a good example where a warning was placed yesterday. However the icelandic met issued one on late Thursday.
  14. Another windy day for Shetland then! Repeat of Saturday then.
  15. Shetland and the western islands are use to pretty extreme weather and are very resilient. The strength of these events are measured against any potential impact and then the necessary warnings are issued. I think something incredible would have to hit Shetland or western islands for the UKMO to issues a 'red' warning.
  16. I would agree. Not an extreme event (at the moment) 50-70mph can cause some minor problems to travel and trees. After having over 100mph winds here yesterday, it doesn't really compare. And after last year, I would say some areas defences are more resilient.
  17. It is likely that this system will be further north and weaker come the new week. NW will probably get the worse if it come off.
  18. Power keeps going off. Unconfirmed reports of 119mh in Baltasound.
  19. Exceptional here, power is flickering and there are reports of major structural damage. All flights suspended.
  20. A surprise blizzard up here, very wet snow, but it is settling. Wind picking up to and coastal roads being closed.
  21. Yeah, looks strong early tomorrow. I would expect 90mph at Sumburgh head or foula island.
