I’m gonna give this spell 7/10. A rare snowfall for central Manchester and it was so special seeing the city turn into a winter wonderland. Would have scored it higher if the snow had lasted a bit longer, that pesky mild sector!

Nice to wake up to another dusting this morning and to see the frozen Manchester Bolton & Bury canal covered in snow, pic below. Can’t wait for the area to be developed and for that area to turn into a little park.

I also think I might get this photo framed: the skyscrapers disappearing into a snowy mist. 😍

I agree, epic photo! Like I said, you can't beat urban snow.

00z GFS and WRF looking quite promising for later @Chris.R is it the 2km model you look at and rate? That one shows quite a heavy batch of snow showers moving through the NW.

Arome, Arpege and Harmonie all have the showers too but perhaps more isolated/lighter.

UKV shows nothing except for the Wirral coast.

Again a good test of the high-res models. The MetO aren’t interested as their model isn’t going for it.

Not expecting much if anything here but if WRF is correct you never know! I was reading about the WRF model and it is allegedly very good at predicting convective events/precip.

Cheers for these Joe! Really handy when in a rush and haven't got time to go through them all. 😚

I see your point. A lot of things in life that are "exciting" do tend to lose their appeal after a while. I'll always love snow no matter if it's a light cover but I'd really like to see a really disruptive fall, a truly extreme event like 60cm of snow like what they get with a nor'easter in the states and even huger drifts with it. The question is what happens if that 60cm happens? Would we want even more than that to be satisfied again?

I always thought this too. I think my 'dream' is to see a proper extreme snow event in my area. Snowdrifts, etc..roads cut off. But if we get that will be satisfied again? It's a bit like model fatigue even in cold weather as once we get it then we are kinda 'done'.

Yesterday was a joy to see, yeah it was barely a covering but it was SO pretty and so rare to have a 'Canadian morning' (my new phrase haha) where nothing has melted, everything is dry, no dripping and it was stunning. Took the dog for the longest walk and then even sat out in my garden for a good hour with a coffee just chillin and soaking it up.  As minimal fall as that was it kinda gave me my fix I think! Obviously I want more but I got my dopamine hit from that! As a slushy two inches does nothing for me...

Fingers crossed for a few more flakes before the obese lady belts this weekend. haha.

Such a good event here. Some more pics. Maybe one last hurrah judging by the radar?

Just love seeing urban areas covered in snow, I think it's prettier than in the countryside.

Let's hope some more surprises appear the next few days, if not then I aint bothered as got my fix this morning. Even sat out in my garden with a coffee to soak it up. My dog thought I was mad...though he was just as mad as tried to eat the snow! haha.

  5. So buzzing to catch up with the last 12 hours, loved reading the build up ad reports etc. To echo Aaron et al we have snow in Crewe. Yes it wasn't much and soon moved away...BUT this is the snow I LOVE, because as some have mentioned...it's dry snow. This is SO rare in Crewe and it was so beautiful to walk my dog in dry air with power snow and at my feet with NO drip drip drip.  Someone else said it but it looked like a Canadian morning...no snow melt and everywhere covered with no wet 'melting' spots. I can count on both hands the amount of times I've seen that in Crewe. All the snow was intact, even added photo of a close up on my garden chair with the snow crystals in full form.

It's now melting but to get to see it in the light looking like an Canadian morning was beautiful.  Weirdly I'm glad it moved away as temp dropped and got to see the sunrise with it all.  Keep the reports coming people, love to read them.

P.s can feel your giddiness @Joe Bloggs. There is nothing prettier than seeing an urban area covered in dry snow!

GEM 0z looks one of the best runs  for snow chances for the region

I copied this from the MOD thread to paste in here and you had already shared it. It's SO rare to have Cheshire as the place with the most snow forecast, normally the colours are always diluted with whites and pinks all around. Might save that for the memory 😂

I agree with some of the comments in here today about this being a friendly/great thread. I've said before that I am a fair/coldweather Netweather-er so drop in and out but you guys are my go to when there is something brewing. 🥰

To echo Joe Bloggs et al, I think we are in for a cracking week with so much potential, If Kasim(really respect your input!) is correct it could be dry but it might not be if things come together, and it will be a fun week of weather watching that's for sure.  I personally think in such low uppers with low pressure and low dams around that things will pop up.  Either way, at least we have a chance of something happening rather than relentless wind and rain with the possibilty of some transitional wet snow for a few hours...what we have now is totally my scene.

  7. It's funny, I was thinking last week that when the potential for this spell started to be modelled and we had north easterlies planned with the remnants of the vortex to our east, that everytime this is modelled, as we get closer it never seems to happen as shortwaves blow up (probably due to the cold air) to our south west and then in later runs they attack.  So have been smiling - through frustrated teeth - seeing that happen the past 48 hours.  Still excited what this spell bring - as the cold looks locked in to at least get here - but those phantom 'Cobra meeting' North Easterlies never seem to come off.  It has the potential to be high risk, high gain but it only takes a slight expansion of the shortwave to create a big low and heavy rain.I do think we might be on the good side of this time but always seems to happen.

Super dry air out there this morning from the continent. Really has a different feel to it doesn’t it. Very little ice despite it being close to freezing when I got up, no moisture in the air. What a refreshing change.

Honestly, can someone tell me how long we’ve actually been locked into that disgusting pattern we’ve just emerged from? Because it feels like an eternity. Breath of fresh air this morning (literally).

Yeah I agree. I love a continental cold day, like you said it just feels different.

This for me is the snow dream. I've always wanted to experience a proper blizzard in my town, yeah we have had strong winds but always wanted to see what it would be like with below zero temps, heavy snow and strong winds.  I have always suspected the only true way would be something that spun down from the north with uber cold air attached.

I know some people have experienced blizzards with sliders etc but in Crewe we are in the rain shadow as the winds are normally South Easterly in those set ups.  This scenario above would truly bring a Christmas blizzard.

  10. Plus I loved it when you get enough cover of snow that it seems SO much lighter outside.

Agree with Aaron too, best time of the year for snow.

Anyways,  behind on the weather shiz but I'm hoping for minimal thaw tonight. Is it meant to be clear up?
