  1. Hailing as well now, that temperature has dropped like a stone! Neighbour's washing line lifted up and thrown across the courtyard. Bonkers out there
  2. Really ramping up here in west devon, like a steam train out there! Thankfully we don't have any trees nearby on the farm I live on but the roof is making some interesting noises! One of the brick sheds outside has had the windows cave in taking the bricks it's attached to with it. Stay safe everyone! Horses are out in the field as their barn has a flimsy metal roof, plus yard owner has scaffolding on her house a few metres from said barn. Hope they are ok, will venture out when it's safer.
  3. Apparently it was an army flare but that could be hearsay. They have set the moor on fire by the yard a few times, one incident a few years ago destroyed 50 acres due to live firing around Easter time when it was very warm and dry. Because of its remoteness they can't quite get to it. It is extremely dry up there currently and nearly all the liquid up there is frozen thick too.
  4. Lightly snowing here just outside tavi and reports of heavier stuff mary tavy way. Very very concerned about the fire as my horses are near the area. My yard owner said there's quite a bit of smoke which isn't good news regarding the direction it's traveling and apparently its spreading fast! Have got horsebox on standby and phone close to me in case I need to move them. Crossing everything they manage to control it!
  5. You never know, was surprised to see it snowing when I set off for work at 6 this morning and by the time I got to Okehampton it was coming down quite hard! When I got to my first yard I checked the MO forecast and it still said dry. Kept snowing for a few hours too even when there was nothing on the radar. I have to admit I'm thoroughly enjoying the dry! For the first time in months I'm not covered head to toe in mud and changing rugs off horses is soooo much easier when they aren't wet and heavy! Was hoping to take the horse out in the few cms we got but there were a few scary drivers so sadly had to pass
  6. Agreed! Plus another benefit of snow is it hides the mud looking forward to not being covered head to toe in mud every day! Though for the first time since 2013 I have developed chilblains!!
  7. Heavy sleet with snow mixed in near tavistock, west devon. I thought I'd have rain at home and sleet at the yard at lydford but I imagine it's snow up there. Will feed horses early today I think in case my little car gets almost stuck again! Current temp 1.5 degrees
  8. A good day on west dartmoor too wasn't expecting so much to be honest. Started off with a dusting first thing but when feeding horses at my yard on the moors it started very heavy and by the time I finished there was at least an inch. Normally I'm all smug in my truck but this year I don't have a 4x4 was very hairy leaving that yard and onto the next one, by the time I finished feeding/bringing in horses there it had mostly turned to sheet ice and almost didn't make it home again
  9. Anyone know if these showers will make land? They look like they are intensifying
  10. Just heard the helicopter go past heading for dartmoor. Seen on the radar some showers heading our direction, watching them with interest!
  11. Can't believe tavi had nothing! Even at home near Milton abbot there's a good inch or two. Looking forward to driving to Okehampton at 5.30am tomorrow Heard Princetown has been cut off!
  12. After it rained for most of the afternoon I was starting to give up on the prospect of any snow, then at about 4.30pm it started. Lovely big fat chunks of snow, within half hour there was these pictures, an hour later there must of been a good couple of inches. Beautiful!
  13. We tend to get so much rain here so when it is cold enough we do very well! We had fab 10ft drifts last year. Would love for it to happen again
  14. Still just sleeting/raining on the west side of Dartmoor, are you Okehampton way?
  15. I've been watching it come in and it's like it's stopped! Looking really black now towards Cox tor. Typically left my thick coat in my workshop that wind is biting!
  16. Still nothing on the west side of dartmoor, looking a bit dark all around though! That wind is brrrrrr
  17. Some good drifts about, apparently snow ploughs are up at princetown trying to clear the snow. Had to abandon the car again and climb snow drifts to get to horses. Loving it! Got my snow ride in yesterday though ? first time in 8 years!
  18. I agree too, couple of cms out there now and it's so peaceful watching it fall. Lovely big flakes too! Hoping we get a good covering tonight ?
  19. Where abouts in Mary tavy are they going? Main road should be fine, anywhere else will be very dodgy! If it helps I passed my test in 2010 a couple months before the epic cold spell and I was working in princetown at the time (plume of feathers), I had some scary times but I learnt how to drive in snow pretty well! Police are patrolling so stopping anyone driving on that road and they want a good reason why you're driving on there!
  20. It's not too bad from tavi to Mary tavy, bit snowy in places but take it slow and it's fine. Across blackdown isn't too bad either however going down from there towards lydford it's crazy! Would not tackle it without a 4x4! Police stopping anyone driving asking if you are ok and having a rant if your not in a 4x4. 3 cars were buried just before the fox and hounds, poor people who got stuck in there last night!
  21. Going to the horses was an interesting experience. Car was a beast and managed 1ft snow drifts though had to get out for one drift that the car struggled to get over and dig at it to make it smaller. That was in lydford. Then went to a clients horses near shell garage sourton service stations and my word! I had to ditch the car and walk as the drifts were over the hedge! Must be 15ft in places. Went on the closed A386 too and they were using huge diggers to move the snow, road was barely single track (normally a 2 lane fast road) with 10ft of snow pushed against the hedges, amazing!
