  1. Its the 100th anniversary this year of the worst summer month of them all: August 1912, It was the coldest, wettest and dullest August on record, a triple whammy.
  2. The Isle of Man gets the worst coverage for me, its in the middle of the Irish Sea and yet it gets coverage by the local networks (Granada and BBC NW), virtually never by the national network.
  3. Not quite as spectacular as what was going to happen 2 years later but early May 1995 saw a heatwave one day and then a week later, wintry showers. On the 5th and 6th May, the heatwave reached its peak with maxima as high as 28.6C at Cheltenham http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/1995/Rrea00219950505.gif Typically as approached the Bank Holiday Monday which was VE Day that year to celebrate the 50th annversary of the end of the war in Europe, the weather became cooler. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/1995/Rrea00219950508.gif By the end of that week, it became even colder with night frosts and some places even reporting snow. http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/archive/ra/1995/Rrea00219950512.gif
  4. Wettest Aprils on record for England and Wales(mm) ~146 2012 142.6 2000 139.0 1782
  5. The biggest astronomical event of the year occurs on the 5th/6th June 2012 when the Tranist of Venus occurs, the last realistic chance of any human being seeing this as the next occasion won't be until the 11th December 2117 In 2004, the UK was superbly placed to see this and we saw the whole event but this time we are only going to see the closing stages at sunrise on the morning of the 6th June. http://astro.ukho.go...2012/index.html The further north and east you are in the UK, the longer you will have chance to witness this very rare event. Lets hope the dawn skies are clear on the 6th of June 2012 or wherever you are in world where this phenomenon is visible. Will anyone be still alive in 2117 who can claim they have witnessed a Transit of Venus?
  6. A -1.1C difference between March and April. That is some difference, the largest -ve difference is -1.5C between March and April 1938
  7. Wettest Aprils on record for England and Wales(mm) 142.6 2000 139.0 1782 ~138 2012 (up to the 29th) We'll have to wait for the data to go through the quality control wash but yet another month that has tended to the extreme
  8. This thread seems to have died. Here's the temperature graphs for the 2011-12 season http://wekuw.met.fu-berlin.de/~Aktuell/strat-www/wdiag/ts.php?plot=temps&alert=1&lng=eng
  9. Depends on what average you compare it to, February 2012 would be below average against 1971-2000 and 1981-2010 averages. We are certain of one thing now, this April is going to be below March's value for the first time since 1998. The last CET quirk was in 2008 when March was below January's CET value.
  10. I have never liked the panning across the country, don't see the point of it. By the way how often does the Isle of Man get mentioned and how often is there a temperature symbol for Douglas?
  11. No I think only a selection of stations Wettest Aprils on record for England and Wales(mm) 142.6 2000 139.0 1782 135.6 1818 130.9 1998 ~125 2012
  12. One of the worst late April days I can remember. Breezy, wet and only 4.2C
  13. Wettest Aprils on record for England and Wales(mm) 142.6 2000 139.0 1782 135.6 1818 130.9 1998 123.4 1829 116.5 1920 114.0 1882 ~113 2012 It will end up being the wettest month since November 2009 for England and Wales
  14. April 1993 ended on a very sunny and warm note. 25.8C was recorded at Creebridge in Dumfries and Galloway on the 29th ( a record maximum for that date) and 25.0C at Nantwich in Cheshire and at Glentrees in the Borders. The Typically just as we headed into the Bank Holiday Weekend, it turned cooler! I remember this little spell well, I remember seeing a large cumulus develop over the Pennines producing a shower. I think it was near Buxton. It was warm and sunny unlike now!
  15. There hasn't been a warmer night since Christmas night here. I wonder what is the latest time into the year that locations recorded their first double digit mnimum of the year?
  16. Wettest Aprils on record for England and Wales(mm) 142.6 2000 139.0 1782 135.6 1818 130.9 1998 123.4 1829 116.5 1920 114.0 1882 112.0 1846 111.5 1966 110.7 1983 ~109 2012 It looks like ending up the wettest month since November 2009 for England and Wales
  17. Looks a "July 2006/2007" type crash. Two consectutive same months (April 2011/2012) in contrast to each other certainly when it comes to the rainfall totals.
  18. I'm not getting worked up by it, I was making an observation and expressing an opinion.
  19. Last time April and May were at least 0.5C below the average in the same year was 1983
  20. Unfortunately the term "blowtorch" is fast coming like term "blizzard" ie misused. April 1991 doesn't fit that grouping as that was a month that had a warmer first half than its second half
  21. Wettest Aprils on record for England and Wales(mm) 142.6 2000 139.0 1782 135.6 1818 130.9 1998 123.4 1829 116.5 1920 114.0 1882 112.0 1846 111.5 1966 110.7 1983 103.2 1800 ~103 2012
  22. That would be the coldest for over 250 years more like it. That would be joint 2nd coldest May on record.
